ON PF.ACH TREES.
Hhlwo, May 181(1.
Dear Sir—A late indisposition, at the time
1 had allotted to myself to redeem the pledge
on my part, which was mutually given by
several members of the society at our last
meeting, to embody such information as each
might possess upon certain subjects ; must
be my apology for offering the following
partial performance of that engagement.
A full and comprehensive account of the
best management of fruit trees ; the kinds of
«ach species now held in estimation ywith
remedies for the maladies and destroying
Inserts to which they are becoming more
•nd more subject, is a desideratum in do
mestic and rural orennomy, which I will not
mislead the society in saying it will ever he
in my power to supply. But had it not been
for the cause already assigned, I sltonld
certainly have touched upon morn branches
of this subject that one, and not have con
tented myself upon this one with copying a
paper which I published some years ago, in
a magazine ; so limited however is its cir
culation in this quarter, that I dare say, the
information it contains, will he new to nine-
tenths of the members of the sneiety. It was
addressed to Dr. Mease. Editor of the Ar
chives of Useful Knowledge, and dated at
Brcmo, Fluvanna Co. Va. May 1812
“ A remedy against the insect which de
posits its eggs in the bark of the peach tre
Das become an object of importance in (lie
cultivation of this valuable fruit. The peach
trees ail over Virginia have experienced the
destructive effects of this insect, and accor
dingly various remedies have been tried,
some of which for a time have promised
success, but finally issued in disappointment.
The fly lays it eggs in the hark of the tree,
just at the surface of the earth, where the
rougher and harder bark of the trunk begins
to change to the softer character of that
which covers the roots. This is performed
in our climate, from the middle of .Tub-
through August and September : early in
August, for the most part, I find the worms
have assumed the chrysalis state, and soon
after, say a or 10 days, are transformed into
flies, when she immediately begins to deposit
her eggs, which are soon hatched into,
worms ; and thus the. round of transforma
tions common to the insect tribes, is com
pleted. While in the worm state, thev do
the mischief by preying upon the soft inure
bark which is the medium of circulation for
the sap ; thus interrupting the flow of the
sap ; the, immediate consequence of which,
is great injury to the fruit, and finally its
destruction, with the life of the tree also.
I think 1 have discovered a remedy for
tbis mischievous insect in tobacco. As much
oured tobacco as is tied up m a bundle for
prizing is sufficient for a tree of moderate
size. The tobacco in a moist state, so as to
render it flexible, is hound around the body
of the tree, just at the surface of the earth
encircling the part where >the flies deposit
their eggs. This precaution is to he taken a
little before the hatching of the. flies—the
middle of July I find is early enough here. I
do not attribute the success of* this remedy
to iu covering the vulnerable part of the
tree merely; for I am informed in other
parts «f the country where common straw
and coverings have been used, they have
failed. In these rases tile fly gets as close
to its favorite region as the covering will ad
mit, and finding some fissure in the tiark,
there deposit., its eggs; but the tobacco
which in its essential qualities is so generally
offensive to Iha. insect tribes, is also I sup
pose, to this destructive fly; thereby prevents
its approach. Be this however as it may,
I wilt go on to detail my experience as to tile
fact. I made my first experiment with to
bacco three years past inis summer, confin
ed to 10 or li trees—the uextspring I found
that the trees still threw out gum at the sur
face of the earth and I apprended my experi
ment had failed. Upon a closer exnniiuuti-
pu however 1 discovered that the gum had
issued from the old wounds of the worms of
the former year not yet entirely heah-fl. The
succeeding summer I extended the experi-
Tnent to all mi Peach trees of favorite select
ed fruit, consisting of between band Gotl
and the same result was observed as in the-
preceding spring; in may cases gum issuing
from the old wntinds, hut no worms in any
instance, where the tobacco had been appli
ed. The last summer I again applied the to
bacco upon a larger scale, and this spring
have again examined thr trees. I find those
Which have had the benefit of the tobacco
application two successive years, have ali
their wounds entirely healed, and in no in-
1‘anr.e have F found the worms to have exist
ed where the tobacco has hern used and pre-
f-rved through the period of the existence
of the fli'-s.”
Since the above was written I have con
tinued to experience uniform success, from
the use of tobacco ; nnd have revcraJ lmn-
dren ysung pencil trues, in perfect health
and full bearing—which I attribute entirely
to the use of that remedy—and although
iny neighbors complain that their peach
trees, nre many of them deud and all rapid
ly declining, I know of no case where this
remedy 1ms been adopted—although i have
taken some trouble to make it known around
me.

Never has there been an article in the
annals tJf commerce, of more consequence
viewed in its relations to agriculture, naviga
tion, manufactures and accommodation.-—
Nor are there any hounds to be set to its ex
tensive uses. It cannot In: raised in Europe,
and yet lias become of prime necessity
there. If it suspends the use of sheep’s wool
altogether iri the warmer latitudes of the old
world, it will liberate great tracts of country
reserved for brer d, and afford to a crowded
population the advantages of more extended
agriculture. It would he easy to trace the
effects of this production of our country, thro’
its consequence upon the condition of man
from the labourer who' manufactures and
who avails of the r.ronomy of its use, till
it would appear to be one of the greatest
blessings.
Comparing it with Tobacco, if this super
fluity could occupy so many hand*—em
ploy so many ships—become an article, of
indispensable use, what may not the com

being adopted into use can never he. s p-

place to this cheaper product, and can ne
ver resume its ascendancy—it may become
dearer—it may he used by the more opu

cotton—already it has assumed a thousand
shapes. Boon it will cease to be mixed w ith

however encouraging the prospect may he
