From the memoirs of Napoleon IIona-
fahte—H’rrtten by himself.
“ The ardour of character of several
generals was dampen by tlie events of
11> 14. They had lost somewhat of that
undaunted bravery, resolution, and con-
fidnenre which so olton acquired glory
for them, and which so much contributed
to the success of past campaigns.
“ On tlie fifteenth of June, the third
carps was to have been under arms at
three o’clock in the morning, and to ar
rive before Charleroy at ten ; but it did
not arrive there until three in the after
noon.
“ On the same day, orders were issued
to attack the enemy in advance of the
woods ofFleurus, at four in the afternoon,
hut it did not take place until seven. Night
intervened before it was possible to enter
Flcurus, where the chief of the army
had intended to station liis head quarters
that day.—This was a serious loss of time,
seven hours, in the opening of a cam
paign.
“ The advance guard of the French
army, on the 17th, did not arrive at Wa
terloo until six iu the evening ; if no
vexatious delays had intervened, it would
have been there at three. The Em
peror appeared very much disappoin
ted ; he said, pointing to the sun,
“ What would l not give to have to
day the powers of Joshua, only to retard
its movements for two hours.
“ Never did French soldiers show
more courage, good will and enthusiasm.
They were impressed with sentiments
of their superiority over all the soldiers
of Europe. Their confidence in the
Emperor was unbounded, perhaps now
more than ever. Hut they were sus
picious and distrustful of their chiefs.
The treason of 1814 they forgot not ;
-every movement they did not compre
hend made them suspicious, and they
imagined themselves betrayed. When'
the first shot was fired, near St. Armand,
on old corporal approached the Emperor,
wad said, ‘ Sire, mistrust Marshal Soult,
you may rest assured he will betray us-’
‘ l>e still,’ replied tlie Emperor, ‘1 will
Answer for him as for myself.’ In the
midst of the battle, an otficer reported
to Marshal Soult that Gen. Yatnlumme
had deserted to the enemv, that his sol
diers loudly demanded that the Emperor
should be informed of it. At the close
cl the battle, a dragoon with his sword
all bloody came >p in great haste, crying
out ‘Sire, repair quickly to the division ;
Gcn’l llenin is haranguing the dragoons
to me enemy.’ 1 Have you heard him!’
• No, Sire, but an officer who is seeking
you has, and lie ordered me to tell you.’
At this very time the brave General lle-
Iiin had his leg taken olfby a canon ball,
after having repulsed a charge of the
enemy.
“ On the evening of the 14th, Lieu-
ten int General Bourmont, Cols. Cluet-
ter and Yilouy, of the staff, deserted
from the fourth corps to the enemy.
1 neir names will he held in execration
as long as the French people shall form
a nation. J lus desertion very much in
creased the suspicions of the soldiers.
It is ascertained, almost without a doubt,
that the cry of 1 run, run,’ was made in
tiie fourth division of the first corps, on
the evening of the Battle of Waterloo, at
the attaek of the villiuge of Haye, l»y
Marshal Blucher. This village was not
defended as it ought to have been. It
is equally certain that several officers,
'bearers of despatches, disappeared.—
Though some officers deserted, not n
soldier was guilty of this crime. Seve
ral who were left wounded on the field
of battle, put an end to their lives on
beariof of the defeat of the army.”

LITERARY.
We have received a number of laic
Misce.llancouspublications ; extracts Irani
which will be laid before our readers, as
occasion permits.
Constable's Edinburgh Magazine, a
work of interest and stei ling ability, con
tains an article entitled “ Special! ns «J A-
merican Literature.” The specimen
which is introduced, certainly no unfa
vorable one, is Irving’s Sketch Hook.—
The Magazine says “ This little work
proves to us distinctly, that there is miml
working in America, and that there are
materials too for it to work upon, of a
very singular and romantic kind.”——
“ No one will dispute hut that it is writ
ten with feeling unel elegance; and we
cannot help thinking that it opens with a
view 01 American genius, which is not
only very amiable, but full of promise.”
The Magazine continues : “ England anil
America are both at this moment suppli
ed, iu a great measure, with a literature
of iScotlislhinanufaCture. We should not
lie much surprised were we to live to
see the day when we, in our turn, shall
be gaping after new novels and poems
from the other side of the Atlantic, and
when, in the silence of our own lairds
and romances, wc shall have Ladies of
the Lake from Ontario, and Tales of My
Landlord from Goose-crock, ns a coun
ter-part to those from Gandercleugl
For our parts, we have no kind of aver
sion to the augury ; and we cannot hut
regard it ns a most paltry and contemp
tible littleness, quite unworthy of the
maternal majesty of England, not to look
with an eye of love and delight upon a!
that is promising in the li-ing genius i
America. It toil! rise, we may re.-t as
sured, and come into day, with whatever
temper we may be pi used to regard it.
Rut we have that conviction of the fund
of good nature and generosity in the Eng
lish mind, that whenever any work with
the stamp of eminent merit is issued from
tlie American mint, it will be bailed
the parent country with a glow of eager
enthusiasm. Notwithstanding the dull
sarcasms and stupid prejudices out of
which Scotland was so long forced to
light her way, the English were yet not
backward in acknowledging the excel
lence of our distinguished writers. John
son himself was obliged more than once
to growl out his approbation, and he
gave it honestly and with some degree of
heartiness when he did give it. Now'
there is not a little distinction attached to
the very name of a Scotchman, and we
feel that our neighbours honor us lie-
cause we have from our birth breathed
the saaie air with Hume, Robertson,
Smith, Stewart, Blair, Allison, Burns,
Scott and Campbell. The literary glory
of America is yet to come ; hut we doubt
not that it is coming, ami wc think we
can discern the dawn streaking the hori
zon even in the slight sketches we are
now about to present to our readers.
The Electic Review likewise notices
tlie “ Sketch Book;” and makes lengthy
quotations. The Review commences
thus : This publication ate guess may be
“ taken as rather a favorable specimen
of American fugitive literature. I le says
The Voyage is a little too fine. Rip Van
Winkle he praises as “ a characteristic
and well told legend.” Upon the essay
on English ll'ri/ers in America, he ob
serves It must he granted that the
people of the U. States hate been rep
resented to us, of late, by travellers o! an
inferior class ; men either of little edu
cation, or degraded character, or who
were raving under the half insanity of
some political infatuation. It is certain
also that these representations or mis
representations have been-invented, ex
aggerated and promulgated with more
industry than conscience, and that they
have been received, we might say de
voured, among us with tlmt sort of indis
criminate readiness which betrays the in
fluence, both of sordid fear and malignant
agitation in the public mind.
In England, at the last dale a contro
versy was in progress on the Theory of
Life. Ur. Lawrence, adjunct Professor
ot Anatomy in the Royal College of Sur
geons, is the head of one party, who
carry the doctrines of materialism to
their fullest extent. This party resolve
not only animal life, but rational percep
tion and moral feeling into mere organi
zation ; and hold that the difference of
mechanism alone makes the branch of
man differ from bis watch or an oytter
These doctrines it is stated, Dr. Law
rence has often taught from his chair,
in the course of his public- lectures. Dr.
Abernathy, senior professor of Anatomy
in the same institution, is the opponent
of Dr. Lawrence and the materialist:
and ina course of lectures, has argued
from the evidences of reason, and me
dical and anatomical experience, that
life is tin original and independent prin
ciple of activity, added by tlie will of Dei
ty to organised matter, though connect
ed bycertain laws with that organization;
and that in man, a third principle, u ra
tionnl spirit is added to life and structure.
Dr. L. is said to be courted and followed in
England—Yet we venture to say, a pub
lie professor in the U. States openly a-
vowing such atheistical principles, would
he generally shunned as a pest. Such is
the difference between two people, in
the sensitiveness and force of moral sen
timent ; and between two governments
the theory of one deeming an established
church indispensable, and that of the o-
ther declaring that “ error of opinion
may be tolerated while reason is left to
combat it.”
