T ie Assembly ofNew-York have come to a resolution (if the Senate concur therein) to refer to a joint committee of both Houses th« Governor's message relative to the al- ledged “ improper interference, of the offi cers of the general government in the local concerns of the state.” That committee ought to prnon this matter to the both m.— 1st. Are the governor’s document's true £<1. If true, do they prove upon any officer «rthe United States an attempt to use his official influence with others to control the concerns of the stnt. ? fid. If so, was that officer pushed on by tiis own intemperate gcnl, or hv superior offic rs nt Washington ? W,. suspect that De Wilt Clinton himself ciiinol tnikc out the ease, with which he boldly set out, viz : that there hits been an organized and disciplined corps—Organized by whom'. Disciplined by whom? By the President—by the officers at Washington This is what Mr. Clinton would h ive us to believe—but facts will not bitir out the bold and u igu irdi d assertion. Where is the proof of this impulse from the head—or ofeone r?among the members themselves?— That some United States officers at New York mnv, in the extraordinary heat of that election, ’have abusi d their official influence, {us John f*. Decatur,) is probable enough— and let such acts he put down. We fear lessly hhv, let the proper constituted authori ties .it once arrest it. The only head of a de partment on whom the slightest suspicion rests, is the Post-Muster General—hut the letter of Vail Purer) fills far short of the ac counts which were circulated last summe of that letter by the friends of Clinton. Ye inch a jealousy do we entertain of the gene till government, that we could wish to se* the history of those post office removals rigorously traced (say, if you please, by the coinmittefc at Washington, or at Albany.) and le t Mr. Meigs be cleared of every shade of suspicion, or unmasked at once. In making these remarks, we would put Mr. Clinton himself entirely out of tho qnes- tion. It is not tin* individuals, hut the great principle to which we look. But much as we cherish the rights of the states, and firm ly as wef would defend them, if we could think them seriously assailed, it is impossible to overlook the character of him who sounds the tocsin on this occasion. We cannot hut see that he has failed in making nut “ a strong case.” against those whom he wishes to wound—that he has pressed rumors and irrelevant facts Into his service—and that “ true to ills vocation,’’it Is bis ambition which prompts him to build his hopes of popularity on this assertion of state rights. But who can regard him as the friepd of those rights, who who was the fli rt to use his “ official influence,” and raise the War-whoop against the rights of Missouri. Enquirer. r, ith him at the time ; they wore enga ged nt a game of cards. On n sudden, a nun in a musk appears in the ntili-chimi- b,,,. he threatens a domestic that he would blow his brain* out if lie opposed his passage—he enters the saloon— he calmly presents his musket—takes nlm—(he hall Hies—and M. de Crelay falls dead, having had just time to ex- claim—wretch you have assassinated me I” The atupifying astonishment which possessed the gen-d’ armorie and tho wood-keeper, gives the assassin time to escape—before they thought of pur suing him he was lost in the forest.— Suspicion immediately fell upon Tulan- ne, who, with Madame de Grelay, was apprehended and tried before the court of assizes at Puri*. On the seventh day of the trial the jury returned a verdict of not guilty ; upon which the preiident ad dressed them thus— ' You are acquitted- God, who reads the bottom of our hearts, will one day unfold this horrid mystery. You aie acquitted ; hut for twelve months have vou experienced the agony and disgrace of a criminal accusation. The Jword of justice has been suspended over your Item!*—this has been tho fruit of adulter ous paniion. Henceforth you will hold in horror such a connection ; you will appreciate, the value of innocence and virtue. You have had a terrible lesson. Let us hope that yon, and all who have heard it, will remember it as a proper admonition.” The above trial is given at length in the London paper*. It very much re sembles the celebrated case ofFauldes, which-was published some time ago. iiEAn-o.T7AniTr, T . c Mu i.vim) vir i i . l-ili J CsKXElUL Oh'Di: EXniA,} 1821. ) rjNIIE Adjutant General will pro til to tho Stuff, s, nml ou», t" |i intuits Bat- Dea f and Dumb.—A Paris paper, the ‘ Constitution!*!,’ contains the following remarkable article: “ The Journal, the Narrator of the Mense, relates a circumstance highly important for humanity ; it states that i young physician has just discovered a method of restoring both hearing and speech to the deaf and dumb, and had foied it with full success upon two indi viduals of tins description. GOFF, (Agent for the Company. No. 20, Bolton's Range, Savannah. Singular case ofAStussinavon.—An of ficer ol the French army, named Tu- lanne, returned home after the disband ing of the troops who had retreated be hind the Loire. It was at Morclleri, near Tours, that captain Tuhtnn* fixed his residence. The chateau of Morel- leri was inhabited by Monsieur & Mada me de Grelay. Admitted into their so ciety, Monsieur Tulanne contracted with Madame de Grelay an iutimacy which became so scandalous that the outraged husband felt himself under the necessity of driving from his house u man who had carried into it so much disturbance and dishonor. Exasperated through despair of his having lost that happiness which a long and tranquil uni >n had allowed him to enjoy, Monsieur de Grelay turned all his indignation against the seducer.— One day in a coffee house he reproached him with his baseness, the infamous man ner in which he had abused his confi tjence, and all the evils with which lie had overwhelmed Inin.—“ Wretch, said he, “ you shall have my life or I yours.” The officer, who had a regard for hi* own life, and no particular desire to take away that of M. de Grelay, wiped off with his handkerchief the marks of con tempt which «le Grelay in accosting him bad thrown upon his person, and went out, leaving him convinced that his bra very was not superior to his fidelity.— »I adame tie G relay, who did not enter tain tbe same hatred which her husband ■did to Tulitnne, contrive J to see him in private. It was in a wood near Morcl leri that they fixed the place of assigna tion : -VI. Tulanne went there in the evening some few moments before Ma dame de Grelay : Hj was waiting with impatience for this faithless woman to throw herself into his arms, when a mas- Jkct-shot extended him on the earth—but did,net deprive him of lifi. On his re covery M. de Grelay was accused ofhav- ing fired this musket-shot; but the court loyal dismissed the cause.
