SOUTHERN INGENUITY.
Among the curiosities of modern days,
which are calculated to interest the pub
lic and excite the attention of the moral
ist and philosopher as well as the mer
chant, there is one which, although its
existence is well authenticated, has not,
in our opinion, been noticed in tile man
ner which its importance deserves. We
they hare passed through the usual! allude to the very curious phenomenon
course of College studies, they are com- of petrihed cotton, the actual existence
plete scholars, and have finished their
education. This is a dangerous mis
take ; for it leads to inattention, indo
lence, and relaxation of mind. It it does
this, the little knowledge they have ac
quire*!, is soon forgotten. 1 he fact is,
that Schools and Colleges do not make
us scholars, but only lit us lor becoming
scholars, if by future industry we strive
earnestly to this end. They qualify us
for obtaining knowledge from books,
which otherwise would he, if not alto
gether useless, at least dark ant! dtllictih
to us.
“ It follows from this, that it is an er
ror in education, to introduce a voting
man to the study of a particular profes
sion immediately after he leaves College,
if he devote the whole of his time to the
study of that profession. For one not
a scholar, appears with much less advan
tage in a learned profession, than one
who is.
“ The most important period of life,
is when we have just left school. If wc
suffer our exertions to relax then, from
the energy which scholastic discipline
has excited and made habitual, there is
great danger that they cannot be reviv
ed. and that we shall sink into listless in
dolence and trifling levity.
“Greet part of your time, then, ought
to be devoted to revising, extending, and
fixing deeply in your mmd, your past
learning. A careful study of the Greek
and Latin Classicks, will assist greatly to
form a just taste. The English Essays
of the Spectator, Sic. will give you a re
lish for the beauties of our own language.
Attention to the Mathematics, will im
prove and strengthen your faculty ol
reasoning. The study of Natural Histo
ry and Philosophy, will enrich yourmind;
and of Moral Philosophy, will form your
heart to virtue. History will instruct
yon in the character of Man, and the
ways of Providence. I know no book
more deserving your attention, than the
Bible ; you will find in it more useful
maxims, than in any other vvoik.
“ Read good books, rather than many
books. Your reading may be various,
without being desultory or promiscuous,
and it ought always to be attentive. Di-
Tide your time systematically, and care
fully pursue the system you adopt. The
morning, for instance, may be employed
with the Classics, ancient and modern ;
the forenoon, with Law ; and the after
noon and eveuing, with Science, Histo
ry, lie.
“ Rise early ; and, to do this, go ear
ly to bed. He loses almost half a day of
his time, who spends much of the morn
ing in sleep.
“ If you be not a good arithmetician;
you ought to make yourself so. It is a
most useful art.
“ The study of Moral Philosophy, es
pecially the morality of the Ne*v Testa
ment, is of the utmost consequence to a
Lawyer for the first qualification for that
profession, is to be an honest man.

LEfJISL ATCUE OF NEW YOtUf,
The House had fixed the compensa
tion of the members of the next Legisla
ture at three dollars per diem, and the
Senate amended tbs bill, so as to make it
retrospective, and embrace the present
*e*iien. It was impossible, however,
1 for the House to concur, a* a majority
of the members had already taken care
to draw their pay, under the former
law, at four dollars per day. Thus this
honorable body have reduced the pny of
every body excepting themselves.
What if railed in the following “ glorious un
certainty," should be railed “ extreme acute-
ne.s and correctness of the law."
As a proof of the “ glorious uncer
tainty of the law,” the following authen
tic anecdote may not be uninteresting to
our readers :—At the Assizes of a Wes
tern G’nutrty, before the present Lord
Chief Justice Abbott, amotorious char
acter was arraigned at the bar for steal
ing seven geese. The properly was
found in his possession, and every evi
dence adduced, so as to leave no doubt
in the mind of every person present, of
a conviction. The case for the prose
cution being ended, the prisoner lor his
defence recalled the old woman (prose
cutor’s servant) who identified the geese
to be the property ol’her master. “ You
have sworn,” said the prisoner, “ that
those geese were your master’s ; now
will yo^we^that there were no gan

the old woman pertly^'" theye were one
gander and six geese. “ Njjw my Lori”
said the prisoner, addressing) liimselbtn
the court, “ I stand here charged watli
stealing seven geese, whereas it appears
in evidence that they were six geese and
one gander." He therefore took an ex
ception to the indictment, which the
learned Judge held to he n good one,
and the prisoner was accordingly dis
charged.—English paper.

marked thi* stein and saved the whole of

The produce was also saved for seed •

Here ronl Ihr asUe.i of Mfi.n aber Grim,
Late of this parish, Blacksmith.
He was born in Sfaconl-\n])i‘.and brrd at
Hammersmith,
From his youlli upwards lie was much ad
dicted to rices, ami was often guilty of
.forgery,
Having some talent for irony.
He therefore produced many heats in his
neighborhood,
AVhich he asually increased by Hav ing
up the coals,
This Tendered him so unpopular,
That when lie found it necessary to adopt
cooling measures,
His conduct was generally accompanied
with a hiss.
Though he sometimes proved a rearns
friend,
Yet, where his interest was concerned,
lie made it a c instant rule tu strike ichile the
iron teas hot,
Regardless of tlio injury he might do
thereby:
And when lie had
Any matter of moment upon the anvil,
He seldom fait.nl to turn it to hisuwn
advantage.
Among the numerous instances that might
be given of the cruelty of his disposition,
il need only he mentioned,
That he wag the means of hanging many of
the innocent family of the Hells,
l ndet the idle pretence of keeping them
from jangling ;
And put great numbers of the hearts of steel
into the hottest Ji es,
Merely (as ho declin ed) to soften the obdura

At length, after passings longlife in the
commission of these black actions,
Hi.i/re Ircing e.hJusted, and
his Hellenes worn out,
He Jlled off to the pl.aee when, only the-fer

T HE recent acquisition of the Florida?,

but very imperfect estimates—we have an
indistinct, undefined idea of its relative, Poli
c’d a»;d Commercial importance—hut we a* c
almost wholly ignorant ofih Soil and Cli

pletes our Atlantic Seaboard from Pas»a-
maquoddy to the Sahiue,—wo know that it
nflords several excellent Harbor.-*—wo know
that it effectually excludes foreign influence,
from the councils of various warlike and
mischievous tribes of Indians—but we wish
further to know, what mo its Agricultural
advantages—what tin* charactvr of its soil—
what its produce—w h it die temperature and
influence of its climate—its Geography—its
Topography* its political and natural Histo

With these view?, the undersigned pro
