York,(the first Number of which is publish
ed,) entitled “ The Idle Man." in n similar
*tyle to the Sketch Hook. The following
extract may serve as a specimen ol the work.
WOMAN.
Women have been called angels in
love tales and sonnets till we have al
most learned to think of angels as little
better than women. Yet a ntnn who
knows a woman thoroughly, and loves
her truly ; nnd tliero are women who
mav be both so known and loved ; will
find, after a few years, that his relish for
the grosser pleasures has lessened and
that he has grown into a fondness for the
intellectual and retined, without au effort,
nnd almost unawares. He has been led
oti to virtue through his pleasure. The
delights of the eye, and the gentle play
of that passion which is the most inward
and romantic in our nature, and which
keepttmuch of its character amidst the
concerns of life, have held him in a kind
of spiritualized existence. He' shares
his very being with one who, a creature
of this world, and with some of this
World’s frailties, is
Yet a spirit still, nnd bright,
With something of mi angel light.
•“ With all the sincerity of n compan
ionship of feeling, cares, sorrows, ami
enjoyments, her presence is as the pre
sence of a purer being, and there is that
in her nature which seem* to bring him
nearer to a better world. She is, as it
were, linked to angels, and he feels, in
bis exalted moments held by the same
tie.
li A woman amidst the ordinary affairs
of life, has a greater influence than a man
op those near her. While, for the most
part, our feelings are as retired as an
chorite’s, her’s are in constant play be
fore us. W r e heur them in her varying
voice. We see them in the beautiful
■and harmonious undulations of her move
ments ; in the quick shifting hues of her
face ; in her eye, glad and bright; then
fond and snuffed. Her whole frame is
alive and active with what is at her
heart, and the outward form all speaks.
And can a man listen to this ; can his eye
rest upon all this, day after day, and not
be touched and made better '! She seem
of a finer mould than wo, and cast in a
farm and beauty, which like all beauty,
acts with a moral influence upon our
hearts. As she moves about us, we feel
a movement within, which rises and
spreads gently over us, harmonizing with
her own.
“ The dignity of a woman has its pe
culiar character, it awes more than
that of man. His is more physical,
bearing itself up with an energy of
courage which we may brave, or a
strength which we may struggle against.
He is his own avenger, nnd we may
stand the brunt. A woman’s dignity has
nothing of this sort in it. It is of a high
er quality, too delicate for mortal touch.
We bow before*it, as before some supe
rior spirit, appearing in beautiful majes
ty.”
cabbage plants, turnips, and even wheal,
»Iiicli dio\e off till the insects, who ne
ver returned, lie then tried the same
operation on his fruit trues with equal ef
fect. Since this dicovnry lias been uaule
known, some boil the branches L leaves
of this plant in water, and then sprinkle
this decoction over young plants, which
is said to preserve them effectually from
destruction by insects. A particular ac
count of this experiment was communica
ted many years ago to the lvoyal Society,
by Christopher (Juliet.
The leaves and flowers of this plant
when sprinkled with molasses, ami laid
iu places infested by cockroaches and
ants, will drive them oil'.
WHITLOW—HOW TO ThEAT IT.
This disease is often a severe affliction
to hard working men, such ns farmers.
It originates from bruises or punctures
that inflame the muscles, tendons orsnem-
branes beneath the skin—these swell
ing, whilst the hard tough skin of the fin
gers remain unyielding, causes the great
pain, and extension of it up the arin—the
thick skin of the tingers also prevents
any exudation or escape of purulent mat
ter, and thus the bone becomes diseased,
and a joint is lost. Persons with soft lin
gers are seldom attacked. An artificial
and similar disease may he formed at any
time by winding a slriug round an inflam
ed linger, or by sewing it up in a piece
of unyielding leather. Ih this case the
most stupid person would think only of
cutting the string or ripping the leather,
and yet it is rarelv that you see a phy
sician go to work in this rational manner.
He must first salve it, and plaster it with
some ointment, which is just as likely to
make a cure as the trending on it. that is
practised by ignorant people, before it
becomes intolerable—by such practices
nnd such neglect, the disease often runs
on till nature makes a gap, nnd the phy
sician modestly charges for what another,
has done.—The proper remedy is simple
and easy ; lay open the thick skin the
whole length of the swelling, and dress
the finger for one or two days with a soft
poultice of bread and milk, nnd then lay
lint on (he wound—a Jitlle red precipi
tate ointment may be necessary where
the proud flesh does not suppurate freely.
The writer of this has relieved a great
many persons without the los9 of a joint,
and has followed no other plan for twen
ty years.—National Gas.

ELDER.—(Sambucus, Linn.)
The virtues of this shrub, w hich is
found in abundance in our fields, and is
now in full bloom, arc net sufficiently
known among us. In continental Europe
it is valued and is used with success in
many diseases. Chaptal, Parinentier,
and others, in their admiral dictionary of
natural history, applied to the arts and
to rural and domestic economy, say , that
from Hippocrates down to the present
day it has been employed iu medicine,
and its virtues nnd properties unequivo
cally confirmed by time and experience.
Its flowers are resolutive, anodyne,
and emollient, infused and drank like
tea, they provoke and c-tablish perspira
tion in certain fevers, colds, and catarrhs;
fried with eggs they arc an agreeable
purge ; applied as a fomentation in cases
of erysipelas, they reduce the heat and
irritation, and prove excellent in all dis
orders of thp skin. Warmed and applied
to the forehead and temples they cure
the megrim—They are used in a vapor
bath for swollen lens, particularly in the
dropsy, in which disorder the berries,
inner bark, and roots of thi9 plant are
used with great effect as a duratick nnd
purgative. From the berries n rob or
thick juice is extracted, whh h a given
with success in bowel complaints, anil in
the dysentery.
•The flowers give a fine perfume fo
via ji , and to wine the flavor of r. u ..
cat : a .pies when laid on a bed of the
flowers when dried, and then confined
from the air, acquire an exquisite taste.
A decoction of its berries dyes linen
when passed through alum water, of a
green brown colour ; and excellent bran
<dy can Im* distilled from them.
