punishment of the damned, according to
the fiction ofAliLTo.N, who tells us that the
wicked in the world of spirits, are doomed
to feel, in rapid transition, all the torments
of Ytre.ni lie it and Cold. Under our Bal

after a long ,1 ought, with the exception of
tw o or Hi;ec slight showers, of upwards of

district has been generally healthy. Our
farmers have been great sufferers in this

An Earthquake was felt at St. Anne
de la Pocatiere, Lower Canada, on the
2 11h ult at about one o’clock in the day ;
it lasted but two or three seconds, and
extended as lar as Kamooraska, where
it was felt about too o’clock. The shock
was pretty violent, the stone house
were most affected, giving them a tre
molo is motion, which seemed to move
the stones, and grind them against each
other.
At Quebec there was a slight degree
of Frest on the mornings of the 18th and
30lh of August.
We understand that a Comet, with a tail
apparently 15 feet long to the naked eye,
was observed on the 15th ult. at 0 o’clock,
In the Southern quarters of the Heavens,
passing from West to East with great rapi

JOHN HANCOCK.—During the seige
at Boston, (Jen. Washington consulted Con
gress upon the propriety of bombarding
tlie town of Boston. Mr. Hancock was
then President of Congress. After Gen.
Washington’s letter was read, a solemn
alienee ensued. This was broken by a mem
ber making a motion that the House should
les see itself into a committee of Hie whole
in order that Mr. Hancock might give his
opinion upon the important subject, as he.
was deeply interested from having all his
estate in Boston. After lie left the chair, he
addressed the chairman of the committee of
the w hole in the following w ords: *• It is true
Sir, nearly all the property I have in the
world is in houses and other real estate in the
t nvti ol Boston ; b it if the expulsion of the
British army from it, and the liberties of our
country require their being burnt to ashes—

The Westchester Herald state**, that
0 villain of the name of Win. Hosier,
was delected tn robbing the store of Mi
chael Marks, by a young lady and gen
tium,o, who, as the term goes, were
keeping company in the house directly
opposite to the scene of burglary.—
While they were prolonging their mid-
wight vigils, indulging iti waking dreams
nt nuptial felicity, they saw the villain
enter the store through the window, and
when he was cleverly in, young Damon
stepped across the road, made all fast,
and gave the alarm, which resulted in
the easy apprehension of Hosier. For
tunate would ivc be, if we had guard?
equally wakeful in the infected district.
