rulers within God's canopy,
In mockery to the throne,
One hireling prayer of slavery
It ciders not alone—
Ten thousnnd.thousnnd, ns one heart,
Spain! join the prayer for thee;
Ten thousand, thousand swords will start
For Spain and Liberty !
Hear ye not voices ?—tis the shout
That, kindling, swells on high,—
See ye not light ?—those brands are out,
They llasli upon the sky.
Sooner those tongues shall writhe in gore,
Those swords be drunk with blood,

False to herself und God.

We extract from the number just publish
ed of the London Magazine, (which is full
of entertaining matter,} the followingauthen-
tie letter from General Washington to Dr.
Cochran, Director General of the American
military hospitals during the revolutionary
war. It is a playful and humorous invitation
to dinner:—
“ West Point, August Hi, 1770.
“ Dear Doctor—I have asked Mrs. Coch
ran and Mrs. Livingston to dine with me to
morrow ; lint ought 1 not apprise them of
their fare ? As I halt deception, even where
imagination is concerned, 1 will.
“ It is needless to premise that my table is
large enoogh to hold the ladies—of this they
had occttlar proof yesterday. To say hotv
it is usually covered is rather more essential;
and Ibis shall he the purport of my letter.
“ Since my arrival at this happy spot, we
have had an ham, sometimes a shoulder of
bacon, to grace the head of the table—a
piece of roast href adorns the foot, and a
small dish of greens or beans (almost imper
ceptible) decorates the centre. When tile
cook has a mind to cut a figure (and this, I
presume, he will attempt to do to-morrow,)
we have two heef-stcak pies, or dishes of
crabs in addition, one on eat it side of the
centre dish, dividing the space, anti reducing
the distance, between dish anti dish to about
six feet, which, without them, would he near
ly twelve apart. Of late, he has bail the
surprising hick to discover that apples will
make pies—and its a question if, amidst the
violence of his dibi ts, we do not get one of
apples instead of having both of beef.
“ If Ihe ladies can pot op with such enter
tainment, and submit to partake of it on
plates, once tin, but now iron, (not become so
by the labor of scouring,) 1 shall be happy to
see them.
“ I am, dear sir, your most oh’t serv’t.
“ GEORGE WASHINGTON.

The following letter, dated July Isl
and addrt'i seil to tlie editor of the Cal
cfltta Journal, contains a melancholy nar
rative of the immolation, or, rather mur
der, of a Hindoo widow ;
Sir—Prompted by curiosity to endea
vor to investigate Ihe religious cercmo
nies of the Hindoos, 1 was induced to
attend the self immolation of a Hindoo
widow, at Ltollyhaut, yesterday. The
preparatory ceremonies, if any, must
have taken place previous to my arrival
at the ghaut, for I found the unhappy
victim of their idolatry in a perfect stale
of insensibility.
Though 1 was aware her husband died
at so late an hour its twelve o’clock on
Saturday night, I laid aside all idea, of
grief for his loss, being the actuating
cause of her immolation ; and 1 am not
disposed to think I was wrong in so do
ing, from the circumstances attending
this barbarous custom. It was about
twenty minutes past eleven when I at
rived. The Brahmins were washing
the body of the corpse in the river and
a few pares from them sat the appa
rently unconscious victim, his widow.—
She was 21 years of age, beautiful to my
eonenplion, by far (he most so of any na
tive female 1 have ever seen ; combined
with the beauty of her face, her figure
was perfect, which heightened the dis
tress, if possible, in the minds of those
who were witnesses of the sacrifice, and
felt their inability to prevent it. The
latter, under any circumstances, I be
lieve, would have proved ineffectual to
prevent her dissolution, and that speedi
ly ; for judging from her appearance,
(which was that of stupefaction,) 1 in
quired of several Brahmins, and among
them 1 found men intelligently delivering j acres, one lot, No. 155, contaiiiiiip20:
