u On the loth we armed here : about

recognized him from a portrait hy an
American painter West, now at Flor

Obje .t in visiting Genoa had been to in
troduce ourselves to him. Accordingly
next day we wrote a. short and polite

ly polite, requesting u° to call next day at
two o’clock. Wo went, a servant stood
ready to receive us, and we were shewn
into a saloon where we waited with beat
ing hearts for about a minute, when he
niado Ins appearance. Me is about 6
feet 6 inches high—his body is small and
his right leg shrunk, and about two in
ches shorter than the other—his bend i,
beyond description line. West’s like
ness is protty good, hut no other head I
ever saw* of him is in the least like him.
Ills forehead is high, and smaller at the
lop than below, (the likenesses are vice
versa.) Mis hair, beautiful brown ring

tween a light blue and grey—his nose
straight but a little turned up, his teeth
most beautiful—his head is perhaps too
large far his body. Il’ho is he ? One
of our company began a set apology,
which he cut short hy tolling us it wa-
useless, for* that he was very glad to see
us, & then began In ask ns questions, 50 in
a minute, without waiting for an answer
to any, and if by chance il was made, hr
seemed impatient if it contained more
than two words. Me llew from one
subject to another, and during about an
hour and an half talking upon at least
200 subjects—sometimes with great hu

looking round he asked with a quizzical

England are become very corrupt, (I

make me a judge of the ten pound court ?
Is. it true that an Englishman is always in
sulted in travelling through America?”
We assured him hot. Me then told n°
turpitude of the act, but it is useless ;
all the ills of life, and troubles which
lead to suicide, are imaginary. No in in
ran starve in this plentiful country, il lie
will take the trouble to work or beg —
Where the energies arc not impaired,
men’s trouble can be overcome ; hut il
we refer to the numerous causes which
have led to the suicides committed in
this city, wo shall find most of them at
tributable lo intemperance. An iiulul
gencc in drinking spirituous liquors, un
til a person becomes a continued drunk
ard, and all tho ills of life (low in upon
hut), is the foundation of ucarly all the
suicides committed.
Abhorrent as the crime is, it is still
satisfactory to know, that in this country
w-c have no laws which denounce ven
geance upon the person committing sni
cide. VVn have no burying in cross
roads, driving a slake through the body,
and confiscating tin* properly as in Eng
land. We leave the crime to be pun
ished by that power, who alone can take
cognizance of the act. This is just, be
cause no war should he waged against
the dead, but examples of moderation,
prudence, and forbearance, held up to
the* living, to prevent such desperate and
usele-s resorts.
