" Toll not the bell of death fur me
« When I mil tiCti'l," the.
When death hath hndc his arrow lly
Como, not beside my cout h . (rouble.
To gaee upon my wuml'ring eye ;
Nor talk of Hope’s exhausted luihhlt*,
When I die !
You tint on I.ife’s mild surface sail,
Fast by the gloves that skirl the. h llo'.v,
Bring not your garlands from tint ' ale,
To fade unwelcome round ms pillow ;
When I die !
In that last hour of suff'ring nature,
When Earth's light joys Inconstant lly;
Strew not your insect pleasures nigh,
To rob of peace euelt paiid leal m e ;
When I die!
While on these qtiiv’ringlips you see
Life's ebbing accents faintly In Table,
(ill not with cold and curious eye,
Beside tny curtains rude assemble :
When 1 die !
Or would ye press to ask me why
My heart was tired—my sojourn weary ’
To give your thoughtless .-ouls reply,
I would but say—“ The world i- weary ,"
When 1 did
No—let the heedless crowd retire,
While one dear form, in anguish kneeling,
Waits the last flash of Nature - lire,
And grants the boon all else deny :
. One gush of woe—one burst of feeling;
When 1 die !
Let no vain pomp attend my way,
To yon green yew trees' dark enclosures;
But Love lament ami Friendship -igh,
And Uriel'prepare her wieatli of osiers ;
When 1 die!
Let fond Affection's tribute calm
My mortal doubts—my meui'ry cherish ;—
Her sacred tears my liier embalm,
And o'er uiy pall unwusling flourish '
When I die !
So when Life's turbid streams are still,
And its black frown's no more beset me;
Some friend may 1’ity's rites fulfill,
And foes (if any such) forget me ;—
When I die !
TEST OK COURAGE.
When the American army "as at Valley
Forge, in the winter of 1777, n Captain of
the Virginia line refused a challenge sent
him by a brother officer, alleging Ihat his lift
was devoted to the service of hi* country,
and that hedid not think it a point of duly i<
risk It, to gratify tile caprice of any man.—
Ilis antagonist ga.e him the character of n
cowaid through the whole army. Consei
oos of not having merited the aspersion, and
discovering the injury he should sustain ii
the minds of those unacquainted with him,
he repaired one evening to n general meet
ing of the officers of that line. On liis en
trance, he was avoided In. the company, and
the officer who challenged him insolently or
dered him to leave the room, a request
svhieh was loudly re-echoed from nil parts.
He refused, and asserted that lie. came there
to vindicate his fame, and after mentioning
the reasons which induced him not to accept
the challenge, he applied a large hand gre
nade lo the candle, and when the fuse had
caught fire, threw it on the floor, saying,
“ there, gentlemen, this will quickly deter
mine which of us all dare brave” dagger
most.” At first, they stared upon him for a
moment in stupid astonishment, but their
eyes soon fell upon the, fuse of the hand gre
nade, which was fast burning down. Away
scamper 'd Colonel, General, Ensign anil
Captain, and all made a rush at liie dour si
muitaiieously and confused. Some fell,and
others made way over the bodies of then
Cmnr .dea— some succeeded in getting out,
but ior an instant there was a general heap
of flesh, sprawling at the . ntrance of tile n-
piuiment. Here was a colonel jostling with
a subaltern; and iliere, fat generals p. easing
lean lieutenants into the boards, and bluster
ing majors and squeaking ensigns wrestling
for exit, the nizeoflhu one and the feeble
ness of the other making their chance of de
parture pretty equal, uiiti! time which does
all things, at last cleared the room, and left
the noble captain standing over the grenade
with arms folded, and his countenance ex
pressing every kind of scorn and contempt
for the train of scrambling; red coats, and as
they toiled and bustled and bored their wary
out ol the door. Alter the explosion had
take ii place, some of them ventured to re
turn, to tak a peep at the mangled r mams
of their comrade, whom, however to their
g'"\t surprize, they found alive and uninjur
ed. When they were all gone, the captain
t!; ''.v himself fl,. on the floor as tile only
possibb im ms of escape, and fortunately
cairn- « ti with a whole skin and a repaired
reputation.
MORILLO.—If the rollowi ng anecdote,
deceived from a creditable source, is to be
believed, the Spanish fortes should rejoici
that such a monster is no longer engaged in
thoir service.
During the Campaigns in Cararcas, a boy
appeared in the lent of Murillo drowned ill
tears. The chief desired lo be informed for
v, hat purpose lie was there. Tun child said
he came to beg the life of his father, then a
prisoner in Murillo's tamp. “What can
j'OU (to to -no. your father r”—naked tie
General. “I can do hut little,” said the
Ivy,--■“ but what I oia shall lie done.”—
Murillo seised the litllu fellow’s ear;
“ Would you sulfur your ear to lie taken elf
to obtain your lather’s liberty ?”—donum-
ed he. “ I certainly would”—was the an
swer. A soldier was accordingly ordered
In cutoff the ear fy pieces The’liny wop,
hot resisted not, “ Would you lose you
other ear for the accomplishment of join
purpose ?”—was the next qor.-.'ion. “I
tin"' suffered much, hut I can stiff suffer,”
rep fed the hoy. Tile oilier ear was taken
off by one stroke of the knife. “ And now” -
said Murillo—“depart!—'The father of such
a son is dangerous to Kpain—II,- most pay
the forfeit of hi. life.” Tilt maimed c hiiet
passed from the quarters of llm C orral, In,;
to witness the execution ofliis father.
