Of nature, or the Mail of Ross run wild.
•Tlstrue he shrank from men even of his nation ;
When they built up into liis darling trees,
He moved some hundred miles off, fora station
Where there were few er houses ar, uiore ease ;
The inconvenience of civilization
Is, that you neither can be pleased nor please;
But where he met the individual man,
He showed himself as kind as mortal can.
He was nol all alone: around him grew
A sylvan tribe of children of the chase,
IN'hose young, tin wakened woi Id was ever new,
Nor sword nor sorrow yet had left a trace
On her umvriukled hrow, nor could you view
A frown on nature’s or on human lace ;
The free born forest found and kept them free,
And fresh as in a torrent or a tree.
And tall and strong and twift of foot were they,
Beyond the dwarfing city's pale abortions,
Because their thoughts had never been the prey
Of care, of gain ; the green woods w ere iheir
portions;
No sinking spirits told them they grew gray,
No fashion made them apes of her distortions;
Simple they were, notsavRge; and their rifles,
Tho’ very true, were not yet used for trifles.
Motion was in their days, rest in their slumbers,
And cheerfulness the handmaid of their loil;
Not yet too many nor too few their numbers;
Corruption could not make their hearts her

The lust which stings, the splendor which en

used to gnat advantage iu embalming
Hid preserving the dead. The body of
.Mr. Boardman, a Senator in Congress
from the Stale of Connecticut, who died
suddenly in Ohio, has lately been bro't
home in this acid, at a warm season of
the year, without the slightest appear
ance of putrefaction, or any change in
the features. We conversed with the
physician who superintended the pro
cess of embalming Si the transportation
of the body, and who assured tis of the
above mentioned fact. In his opinion,
the pyroligneous acid will more than
surpass the Egyptian ait in preserving
the dead. It will also be of great use in
anatomical preparations.

Harlem, July 10.—The centenary of
the invention of printing by Lamina Kos-
ter, a native of this cily, was celebrated
with the greatest solemnity and with va
rious demonstrations ofjoy. The whole
gave great satisfaclion to the immense
number of spectators, and no accident
w hatever occurred. The great Church
which was fi'ted up for the occasion af
forded a very striking sight. An ap
propriate discourse delivered from the
pulpit by Professor Palm, in which he
vindicated the claims of Roster to tins
great invention, made a grand impres
sion on his hearers.
THE PEN.
The following warm transfusion of fine
thought from Greek to English, though it
has been before placed in tile poet’s corner,
yet deserves to receive another impression
from the printer, and to make another and a
tasting one upon the reader; and it is ano
ther proof, added to those which Pope and
Moore have given, that the muses, though
long ago exiled from the poetic mountains
and prophetic groves of their native laud,
have found, in a distant country and a re
mote ag<-, as expressive words as those they
taught to Homer, or Anacreon.
li is a vigorous and beautiful description
of the almost divine power which the art
of writing has exercised over hitman affairs.
The art of preserving ideas in imperishable
characters, better than the art of embalming,
received into its faithful repositories, not the
bodies, but the minds of tiie great and good;
and the conceptions of antiquity come forth
from their bright retirements and tranquil
solitudes, not like mummies from their gloo
my grottoes and dread caverns in their grave
clothes, and with the dust of mortality up
on them, but warm with life, and full of the
grace and majesty of unfading health and
immortal vigor—they did not die and be
buried, genius gave them of 11 the amrheeta
cup,” and they yet come round us fresh and
breathing.
The power which the pen ancietly exert
fd, has in modern times been assumed and
incalculably extended by the type. The
press already sways the most powerful do
minion upon earth, and it is fast becoming
universal as well as supreme. The Bourbon
and the Muscovite are but vassals to that
great lord paramount of Christendom, and
if they consent not soon to do fealty and
homage, their honors will be stripped from
them and their inheritance given to others.
Pens were first made of the reed ; and its
character as a reed, contrasted with its char
acter as a pen, furnishes an exact and a
beautiful illustration of the difference be
tween barbarous and civiliz. d man.
