THIJ WAVEKLY NOVELS.
FROM (UltSCO.'l’s YEAR IN KUROPE.
“ Walter Scott and his writings hold a
prominent rank in the public considera
tion, and furnish an almost certain topic,
in every literary coterie. There is
very little hesitation any where in giv
ing him the entire credit of Waverly
and all its congeners. It is well known
that he bargains with the printer for the
copy, receives the money, tit.d examine"
the proof sheets ; and one of my Ameri
can acquaintances was informed by the
chief bookseller, that be bimsell bad
paid him more than £5o.000 lor the
Waverly and other productions, and he
knew that he hail received at least
£15,000 from other publishers. His
office of Clerk of the Sessions is worth
£ 1200 per annum ; and in addition to
this good fortune, an uncle of his tvile
died lately in the East Indies nnd left
her about £.15.000. The difficulty which
every body is under, of assigning any
reasonable motive for his refusing to a-
vow himself as the author, has led to the
Surmise that his brother, Thomas Scott,
who resides in Canada, may be the real
author. This brother, when a pupil of
the high school, tvtt9 distinguished by
his readiness and turn for satire—his
wife also, who is said to be exceedingly
clever, is believed by some to have had
no inconsiderable share in these produc
tions. She came from Galloway, tint,
part of Scotland whose local manners
have been so wonderfully depicted in
Guy Mannering, ami is known to be
conversant with the habits of the coun
try—but the main current of public, and
I, may say, private opinion, is in favor td
the clerk of the session", notwithstand
ing that he is known, himself, to have
written the rev iew of the Tales of on
Landlord, in the Edinburgh Review.”
OSSIFICATION OF >IAN.
In the centre of the museum at Dub
lin, ij suspi tided the skeleton of a gram
pus 1.5 or 20 feet in length. The pre
servations in this Museum are numerous
and valuable : among them are two rare
and celebrated specimens. One of these
is the skeleton of one Clark, a native of
Cork, who it is said was a young man oi
surprising strength and agility ; but hav
ing once laid all night in a field, after in
dulging in great dissipation, the left pail
of his body began to ossify, [turn int >
bone.] and the process continued, by
si vv degrees, until every part grew in
to a t ony substance, excepting his skin,
eyes and entrails. His joints became
stiflvnrd, so that he could neither bead
his body, lie down nor rise up without
assistance : when placed upright, like a
Statue, he could stand : but could move
no more than if dead. Hu teeth were
joined, and formed into one entire bone,
bo that it became necessary to break a
hole through them to convey liquid sub
stances, to preserve a miserable life.
His tongue lost Us use, and his sight left
turn some time before lie expired. Tins
preparation shows the progress of this
singular instance of disease, a parallel to
which is not perhaps to be found in any
ether collection.
Bonaparte.— i he maximum of the
Bniooer of troops which Napoleon ever
hatt on foot is 600,000 men. The po
pulation of his empire was above forty
millions of souls, double bp population
ot France under Louis XIV. who long
kep* 400,000 soldiers in pay. It would
be an extraordinary mistake to imagine
that all the conscriptions decreed were
actually levied : these decrees were
stratugems of war employed to deceive
foreigners ; they were used a? a source
of power, and it w as the coii"tant adher
ence to this system which always nude
people think the French armies more
numerous than lKc -r actually were. In
Egypt, it was agreed amongst all the com
danders of corps to add a third above
the actual quantity of provisions, arms,
clothing, and other articles distributed,
in the orders of ihe day. H-mre the
author of the Military Summary of t ie
campaign of 1799, is surprised that, ac
cording to the oi ders of the day issued in
that anny, it amounted to 40 000 t e
whilst all the other authentic informati
on he could procure w- it to prove that
its effective force was considerably be
low that number. In the report of the
campaigns in Italy in 1796, 1797, and
subsequent years, the same means wer<
used for conveying exaggerated ideas ol
The strength of the French.
The ettrinns surgical operation of itru-
puncturnlioii (puncturing the skin and flesh
with a needle) i“ exciting considerable at
tention in England.
It. is said to be of Asiatic origin, arid is
more particularly employed in rheumatic
di s enses unaccompanied with inflammato
ry excitement. Mr. Churchill of London,
apeaks very decidedly in favour of this re
imdy in “ local diseases of the musclar anrl
fibrous structure of the body.” The instru
ment used hy hirn is a common sewing nee
dle, fitted to a small ivory handle. The
needle should he gradually introduced, with
somewhat of a rotatory motion of the liantl.
and suffered to remain fite or six minutes.
The operation neither produces pain t nor
gives rise to bleeding.
