At Albany in the Stale of N. York, on the Silt
inst. was celebrated, “with every demonstra
t ion of joy that the interesting occasion might
he expected to call forth," the entrance of the
first boat from the Great Western Canal into
the Hudson river. The accomplishment of
this vast enterprise,by which Navigation is ex
tended from the Northern and Western LaUr-
\o the Atlantic Ocean, is worthy of the power
ful state that has projected and executed it,
nnd will lie an iinperi-hable monument of the
foresight, e.nterprize nnd patriotism of her citi
zoos. Its benefits arc not for the present ge
neration alone, bat wilt l,fi shared by millions
yet unborn. While wc rejoire in their sue
rcss, and feed proud that the American Union
can bon«! of such a member as New-York, we
are humbled at tire recollection, that so little
has been dono towards internal improvement
in the South, and almost nothing in our own
state. Wa huve not, it is true, Ihe population
and wealth that would enable us to execute
public works of magnitude equal to theirs—
| but still tliere is enough of both to do some
thing efficient for the interests and respectabi
lity of the state. It is in the will, more than in
the tglimiii, that wk are deficient.

It is known (says tlie last Raleigh Regis
ter,) that the citizens of uur State elect their
Electors t>y General Ticket. It is our opini
on that hut one ticket will be voted for, that

cannot at present doubt it will consist of the
friends of Mr. Crawford This matter,
however, will be put heyoud question before
the close of Ihe approaching Session of uur
Legislature, which meets next muuth.
In Tennessee, the election of U. S. Sena
tor was to take place on the 1st. inst. It
has assumed a character, which it very in
teresting to the nation at large. Several at
tempts were made to organize an opposition
to Col. John Williams, whose term has just
expired. (He is the friend of Crawford a
gainst Jackson.) Mesms. Pleasant M. Mil

I'eoplt—because it is a mode of choice more
democratic in principle, less liable to impro
per influence and igtrigue, and therefore pur
er in practice than the present mode—-more
congenial with the soundest construction of
the constitution of the United States, and
more consistent w ith the spirit of the consti
tution recently adopted in this state.

This mode of nomination lias been as
much canvassed in Virginia as in any other
state. Our General Ticket law called forth
a world of discussion. The results to which
our fellovv-citizens were at that time con
ducted, were, these: that the Legislature
ought only to direct in what manner the
state nr people at large, were
credit to punctual customers.
