The Rev- Jit mil .‘IrrhilmUl, of Xnrth Ca
rol inn.—This gentleman inner, periihps.
jti the vvlioln cntirso of liis life, tlressod
himself completely without some one to
net as a monitor nml an assistant, llis
coat, his waistcoat, liis cravat, or some
Other article olVIotliintr, was almost always
omitted. On rising in iho morning, even
during cold weather, lie frequently forgot
to put on his shoes nml stockings, till re-
■minded ol’it by liis wife, or some oilier
ntemlrcr of the family, lie oftentimes
wore stockings of din’erent colors, such as
a blue and a grey, ora black and a white,
and went soinetimos abroad with a hoot
on ono foot nnd n shoe on the other. Hr
lived about six miles from the plarc wltcrr
ho was accustomed to preach. Ho linr
been known frequently to walk tiiat dis-
tar.ee, having thrctistli forgetfulness, left
his horse standing saddled at hisdoor. At
{mother time lie would ride to church and
.return home on foot, leaving his horse
near the pineo of vt or.ship, tied to a hush,
or tho limb of n it >e. By it third act of
inadvertency ho would occasionally lead
liis horse to church and homo again, with
out over recollecting' to mount him.
It was not the custom in the part of the
country where this qvntleman resided, for
tlie congregation 10 provido a church
Bible. Tho oilic.iatiti" clergyman always
brought his Bildo along with him. This
custom proved a source of no little incon
venience to Mr. Archibald. Frequently on
his arriving at chrur.h,sometimes even af
ter ascending tho pulpit, lie found himself
•without it Bible, and was obliged to dos-
•patch a messenger to a house in the neigh
bourhood to borrow one. A scene was
once witnessed at a halitisnml ceremony,
under the direction of this gentloinan, oft
so ludicrous a nnturo ns to discompose tlie
•be gravity of the whole congregation.—
'i'iia water to be used was brought to him
in a pewter basin, containing not less than
a quart. Instead ofdipping his hand into
tlie water and sprinkling the face of tlie
infant, he suddenly emptied on it tlie whol6
contents of the vessel, to tin 1 great annoy
ance of its clothes, and tlie no small dan
ger of strangulation.
When warmed with preaching, wo have
frequently seen 11 ini with a view to cool him
self, pull off first his coat, then his waist
coat, and lastly his cravat. These articles
of clothing lie would lay down in the pul
pit, and, unless reminded of it, seldom
think of putting them on again when the
service was finished. When riding thro’ |
tho country to visit liis parishioners, to
preach to aneighhouring congregation, or
for any other purpose, liis reveries were p re
ductive ofgrentinconvenience and loss of
time. Onhaltingat the houseofafriendto
hreaKfast, dine, or pass tlie night, lie would
frequently, on setting out again, give liis
horse’s head a wrong direction, and never
discover his error till made sensible of it
by h : s arrival at his own door. When on
these tours, he always rode tlie same horse,
a sagacious animal, to w hich lie had given
tlie name of Old Dun. This beast had an
exeollent memory, and seldom passed a
stable at which he had been formerly foil,
without paying it a visit. But his master
Was us forge Util as he was retentive of
places and favours. This discrepancy of
character between the horse and bis rider
was oftentimes a source of ludicrous oc
currences, mul once of an accident some
what serious. When Old Dun would halt
gt tlie stable, his master supposing him to
he still pursuing bus journey, frcquentl)
retained his sent, sometimes even in the
midst of rain, until discovered by the ostler
or some other person, and requested to
dismount. On one occasion, the horse
iinding the stable door open, entered xvith-
out ceremony, and ftruck his rider’s head
with such force against the wall, us
brought hitn with considerable injury to
the gionnd. When setting out front a
tavern, where several travellers had bank
ed as well a* himself, lie once mounted, by
mistake, another gentleman’s horse in
stead of liis own, and vs as pursued and ac
tually arrested for felony. As soon, how
ever, as recognized, he was set at liliertv,
for no man sustained a move spotless re
putation.
This gentleman lining nn excellent schol
ar tuugiit, inf it q bite, .a very respectable
grammar chord. When plunged in n re
x ci io, lii pupils mice recited to him an en
tire lesson in Horace, tr.xmig him, in the
meantime,it lloncr to look over, without
liis lining at all sensible of the trick.—
When at table, he nte voraciously of
whatever dish Mood iinmediarelx hefue
him, seldom ex eu lonkiiiff at mix thingelsc,
\i bis own table, unless reminded of bis
d itv by his wile, lie rarely paid nnv men
tion to his guests, lmt wrapt within him-
self, allowed them to shift entirely for
themselvf •• If n pinto wore handed to
him, to he passed to a third person, he
would frequently set it down, and, if not
prevented, hastily devour its whole con
tents.
Mam- other instances might he mention
ed ,,/' tb>) nadvertcticy and blunders of
this singular character, liis absence of
mind proved ultimately fatal to him.—
Travelling in the western | art of Smith
('arolina, lie came to a stream, n brunch,
we believe, of Bread Hirer, fordable in
common times, lint swollen then by a full
of mill. I fieonscieus of the change, al
though he hud frequently crossed the
stream before, he plunged in, was swept
from Inn horse, and drowned.
