FROM THE “TIME S TELESCOPE*
“THE NEW YEAR.”
Another your Itns wing'll its airy flight,
Still wrapt the litturo in mysterious night,
An eager hurte we feel ;
We long—we hope—and e’en swift time serins flow-—
Enquiring esk, while yet we would not know,
What muy this yenr reveal I
Whnt mny it not?—All! one short year may send
To his long home, n loved, n valued ti icnd—
Hring othrrs to our view—
t,ny hundreds low in death—Alas ' Replace
Full many a well-known and lamented face,
lly forms entirely new.
year may hring the wounded mind repose,
O’erwhclm tin' happy with iiniiiunborcu woes;
Mny case the captive’s doom;
A fleeting year, ere it is past and gone,
May add fresh beauty In the form of one—
Decay another’s bloom—

respectfully solicits the pntroaage of tier friends
and the public in general. She is prepared
to entertain TR AVELLERS and PRIl' A fE

assistance of Mr. and Mrs. Bivins she earnest
ly hopes to receive a share of public patronage ;
she flatters herself that her charges will be suf
ficiently reasonable to cause a customer to call
the second time. There is a stable aud carn

May ope to sorrow pleasure’s blissful door,
Muke tlie poor wealthy, and the wealthy poor!
Thus change the forms of fut<—
May shower profuse, from golden realms alien e,
On private homes the joys of peace—and love—
Bring discora to a state.
Could we look forward hut through one short year,
Hmv Would the smile alternate chase the tear,
The tear its place supply :
flow one sud hour would i iew the mind perplext,
Fcrchance relieved, and free from care the nest,
Ere that tear was dry.
Btd though weak man alone can truly see
\Vlint bail) been—is—not whnt yet may be,
We’ll fondly paint the best;
We’ll bid the radiant dawn of hope appear,
’.Chlougli its fair glass w i 'll view the opening year,
And while we hope, we’re blest.

I Would ndfbe the one to break
A nit rry heart.
For any wealth that I could take
From such a part.
Y would not be the one to wound
A trusting friend,
Jf worlds ol fame there might be foetid
’Neath such an end
For whnt were wealth, and fame, ur.d pnilc,
And nodding plume*.

EDl’CATIUN.
The nvt of eilucutmir or training huintsn
beings, tin it is the most important, so it should
be the most diligently cultivated—the most
liberally rewarded, and the most highly prized
pursuit in society. Or. Brown, in Ins noble
Treatise on the Mind, thus describes this art,
and :he qualifications it should imply. How
few are there among those, who either as pu*
rents or professional instructors, have charge
of the youthful mind, that come up to the mo
del here sketched.
There is another art, however, to which
knowledge of the intellectual and moral na
ture of man is still more important—that
nolde art which has the charge of train
ing the ignoruucc and imbecility of infancy
into ;.l! the virtue, and wisdom, and power,
of tnaturer manhood ; of forming ol a crea
ture, the frailest and feeblest, perhaps, which
Heaven has made, the intelligent and fearless
sovereign of the whole animated creation—
the 1 iterpreter and adorer, and almost repre-
seetative of the Divinity. The art winch
p< rlhrins a transformation so wondrous, can
not I nit he admirable in itself; and it is from
Observation of the laws of mind, that all
which is most admirable in it is derived.—
Tin sc laws we must follow indeed ; since they
om- , not by onr contrivance, but by the con
trivance of that nobler wisdom, from which
th . re existence of mind has Bowed ; yet if
We know them well, we can h ad them, in u
grt at measure, even while we fallow them.
And while the helpless subject of tins great
moral art is every moment requiring our aid,
With no understanding that may rise from truth
to truth, to the sublimest discoveries, or may
femam sunk forever m ignorance ; and with
susceptibilities of vice that may be repressed
and of virtue that may be cherished ; can we
know too well the means of cheeking what
is evil, and of fostering vvluit is good ? It is
too late to lie by, m indolent indulge ce of af
fection, till vice be already formed in the little
being whom wo love, and to labor then to re
move it, and to substitute the virtue that is
opposite to it. Vice ulready formed, is al
most beyond our power. It is only in the
State of latent propensity, that we can with
much reason expect to overcome it, by the
jtnor d motives which vve arc capable of pre-
senhng; und to distinguish tins propensity
before it lias" expunded itself, and even before
it ts known to the very mind in which it ex
ists—to taine those passions which are never
to rage, & to prepare at a distance, the virtues
of ether years, unplies a knowledge of the men
ted constitution, which can be acquired only
by a diligent study of the nature and progress,
arid successive transformations of feelings.
f is easy to know that praise or censure,
trw'ird or punishment, may increase or lessen
the tendency to the repetition of any particu
lar action ; aud this, together with the means
of elementary instruction, is all which is com
monly termed education. But the true sci
ence of education is something far more than
tins. It implies a skilful observation of the
past, and that long foresight of the future,
which experience nnd judgment united, af
ford. It is the art of seeing not the immedi
ate effect only, but the series of effects which
xnay follow any particular thought or feeing,
in the infinite variety of possible combina
tions—the art often of drawing virtue from
apparent evil, and of averting evil that may
arise from apparent good. It is, in short, the
philosophy of the human mind applied par
ticularly to the human mind ; enriching it,
indeed, with all that is useful or ornamental in
knowledge, but, at the same tinje giving its
chief regard to objects of yet greater mo
ment—averting evil, which all the sciences
together could not compensate, or producing
good, compared with which the sciences to
gether are as nothing.
