Timothy Dabble was a young man of very prom
ising fairnts—far he wrote a fair hand, and had
thrice won the silver medal at a country academy;
he was also an orator, for he talked with emphatic
volubility, aud could argue a lull hour, without
taking either tide, or advancing a single opinion;
Robert Sumgh. Simeon , he had still farther requisites for . loquence, for
Stevvurt, John Shock- lie made very handsome gestured, had dimple* in
i lu» chren when he smiled, and enunciated most
; harmoniously through hi* nose, lu short, nature
had certainly marked him out for a great man ;
; fur, though lie. was not tall, yet he added at lea*t
half an inch to his stature by elevating bis bead,
and assumed an mnay.ing expression of dignity
1 by turning up Iris nose ami curling his nostrils,
: in a style of conscious superiority. Convinced by
• therit* unequivocal appearances, Dabhle's friends
iu fall on*.. **j, oue and all, declared that lie *;,•
1 undoubtedly burn to be .1 great man, aud it would
j be Ins own fault if he were not one. Dabble wai
j tickled with an opinion which coincided so happi
ly with bis own; for vanity, in a confidential whis
per, bad given him the like intimation, aud he
reverenced the judgment of bis friends, because j (;;1 j s n a e „(|,., n;u , 0 |
they thought so highly of him. Accordingly, he I w’pjjj,
set out with a determination to become a great
man, and to start in the scrub-race for honor and
renown. How to attain the desired prizes, was,
however, the question. He knew, by a kind of
instinctive feeling which .seems peculiar to grovel
ing minds, that honor, and its better part—profit,
would never seek Aim out: that they would never
knock at his door and crave admittance, but must
be courted, and toiled after, and corned. He.
therefore, strutted forth into the high-wavs, tht
I market places, and the assemblies of the people
! —ranted, like a true cockerel orator, about virtue,
Ephraim I an ,j patriotism, and liberty, aud equality, aud
this was a free country, and lie himself au arrant
nnd incontestable buzzard !
• • « « •
I will unt fatigue myself with tracing this oa-
terpiller in Ins slimy progress from worm to but-
terlly; suffice it to say, that Dabble bowed, and
bowed, and lawued and sneaked, and smirked, and
libelled, until one would have thought persever
ance itself would have settled down into despair.
There was no knowing how long lie might have
lingered at a distance from Ins hopes, had lie not
luckily got tarred and [tailored for some of his
electioneering mameuvres: this w as the making
ol him ! Let not my readers stare—-tarring and
leathering here is equal to pillory and cropping
ears in England ; and either of these kinds of
martyrdom will ensure a patriot the sympathy am!
: support ol hi* faction. IIis partisans (for even he
j had his partisans) took his case into consideration ;
1 he had been kicked, and culled, aud disgraced,
and dishonored in the cause ; lie bad licked the
J dost at the lect ol the nioh :he was a faithful drudge,
I slow to anger, of invincible patience, of incesaant
assiduity....a thorough-going tool, who could he
curbed, and spurred, and directed, at pleasure;.,.,
in short he bad all (lie important qualifications
1 lor a litllr great man, and lie was accordingly
j ushured into office amid the acclamations of the
J party. The lending men complimented bis use-
j fuliiem, the multitude his republican simplicity,
' and the slang-w haugers vouched for his patriotism. J ol,, ‘ hniinl
J Since his elevation, lie has discovered indubitable
j signs ol having been destined for a great man....
1 his nose has acquired an additional elevation of
j several degrees, .so that now lit* appears to have
bidden adieu to this world, and to have set his
thoughts altogether on things ubuiH ; and In* lias
j swelled aud inflated himself to such a degree, that
' his friends are under apprehensions, that he will
j oue day or other, explode and bluw up like a tor-
ptdu.

The language spoken hv this people is the odd
est jumble in the world, and it pervades the very
highest circles. They have their own peculiar
mode of expression ol xx |»ich I think certainly nobo
dy would wish to deprive them. For instance, xvhen
a lady (I now speak of their very elite) wishes lo
say, we are quite a social party;” she invariably
tells you instead, “ ur’/n pooty slick!" When
they admire an object warmly, “ it is not so slow,”
or, it is ’‘awful nice.” A leading editor observed
tome, that “ Byron was a ’cute chap, and gave it
to them are fellers what abused him, jist as tight
as he could draw it, aud a h t lh tighter.” It is quite
shocking to hear young blushing girls budding in
to womanhood, declare that they intend to “ go
the whole hog ?” meaning they w ill accomplish
any thing entirely, if possible. Oue of the must

Julia was sensitive and artless. Hhc loved her
husband with that deep tenderness which knew all
the thiiils of love's hopes and fears. Her heart
was like a goblet filled to the brim, whose con
tents tremble and overflow when shaken ever so
lightly. There was, therefore, in these enthusias
tic praises of another, something strange and
wen cruel. Ktill she could not believe that hts
was serious ; and forciug a smile, and struggling

him in silence as he rattled on.
