In the year 1710, De Lntude, who was ol' res'* j

the engineers, came to Baris, and lining unsuc
cessful in obtaining any appointment, lie formed a
sofiemn to gain tlie good will and protection of
Mn .nme de Pompadour, the King’s mistress, hy
disclosing to her a pretended plot for poisoning
her. 'This artifice being detected, he was seized
and confined in the Lastly of Vincennes, from
w hieli he escaped, after nine months’ confinement,
hut was retaken and imprisoned in the Bastille.—
lie had for a fellow prisoner, a young man of the
name of D’Alegre, who had been in confinement,
at the instance of Madame de Pompadour, for*
three years These two unfortunate men occu
pied the same chamber. The then governor of
the Bastille, Mons. Berrver, treated them with
humanity, and used his best endeavors to procure
their discharge, by forwarding and hacking their
memorials and petitions. At length, however, he
was under the painful necessity of announcing to
them, that in consequence of Aladame de Pompa
dour's positive orders never to he spoken to on
their behalf, there was no prospect ol iheir release,

story :—
" To any man who had the least notion of the
situation of the Bastille, its extent, its towers, its
discipline, and the incredible precautions which
despotism had multiplied more surely to chain
its victims, the mere idea of escaping from it
would appear the client of insanity, nml would in
spire nothing hut pity for a wretch so devoid of
sense as to dare conceive it. A moment’s reflec
tion would suffice to show that it was hopeless to
attempt an escape hy the gates. Kvery physical
impus-il'ility was united to render this impractica
ble. We had no resource hut hy the outside.—
There was in our chamber a fire-place, the chim
ney of which came out of the extreme height of
tli ■ tower—it was full of gratings and liars of iron,
which in several parts of i*. scarcely left a free pas
sage lor the smoke. Should we he aide to get to
the top of ilie tower, we should have below us a
precipice of great height, at the bottom of which
was a fosse or broad ditch, surrounded hy a very
lofty wall, lo lie got over. We were without as
sistance, without tools, without materials, constant
ly watched night and day, and guarded besides,
hy a great number of sentinels who surrounded
the outworks of the Bastille. So many obstacles,
I so many dangers, did not deter me. I hinted my
| scheme to my comrade; lie thought men mad
man, and relapsed into despair. I was obliged
alone to digest my plan, to anticipate the frightful
host of difficulties which opposed its execution,
and find the means of remedy ing tfu in all. To
accomplish our object we had to climb to the
u p of the chimney, notwithstanding the many
iron gratings which were opposed to our ascent;
1 and then, in order to descend from the top of the
i tower into the fosse, we required a ladder of 1*0
| feet at least, and another ladder necessarily of
wood to get out of the fo-se. If I could get these
materials 1 must hole them from every eye, work
without noise, deceive all our spies, and this for
months together. Now for the details of my op
erations. Our First object was to Find a place of
concealment for our tools and materials, in case
i we should he so fortunate as to procure, any. By
dint of rolleeting on the subject, a thought struck
me which appeared to me a very happy one. 1
had occupied different chambers in the Bastille,
and had always observed, whenever the chambers
cither above or below me were inhabited, that I
had Ik aril very distinctly any noise made in either.
On tlie present occasion 1 heard all the move
ments of the prisoner above, hut not of him
m low. nevertheless 1 lelt confident that (herb
was a prisoner then*. J conjectured at last that
our tinder box we made, iu less than two hours, a
good knife, with which we formed two handies to
these iron legs; the principle use of these was to
the gratings of our chrmhey. In tlie
the daily inspection being over, with
those iron legs we raised some tiles of our door,
and by uiggiiig lor about six hours, we discovered
that our rm■jertiires were well founded, and that
there was a vacant space between the floor and
ceding ofnhi nt four left. We replaced the riles,
so that they sc treely appeared to have bemi rai®
cd. This done, we ripped tho ^scams and hems
of two shirts, and drew out the threads of them
one by one. These we tied together and wound
them on a number of small balls, which we after
wards rc-wound on two large halls, each of which
was composed of fifty threads 00 feet long. We j and one .thick. We roll' d it to
twisted these and formed a cord about fifty live feet La Tour du Treason, which n
Ipng, and with it constructed a rope ladder which
was intended to support us aloft, while we drew
out of the chimney the bars and spikes' o» iron
with which it was armed. This was ttie most
painful and troublesome of our labours, and cost
us six months’ toil, tho recollection of which
makes one shudder. We could only work by hen •
ding our bodies iu the most painlui position; an
hour at a time was all we could hear, and we never
came down without hands .covered with blood.
'The iron bars were fastened \vith an extremely
hard mortar, which wc had no means of softening
hut by blowing water with our mouths into the
holes as wo worked them. Judge what this work
must have been, when we were well pleased if in
a whole night, we had worked away the eighth of
an inch of (his mortar, When we got a bar out
we replaced it in its holes, that when wc were in
spected, tlie deficiency might not appear, and so a;
to enable us to take all of them out at onue f should
we he in a situation to escape. After six months
of this obstinate and cruel work, we applied our
selves to the wooden ladder which was necesx ry
♦ o mount from the Fosse upon the parapet, and
from thence into tlie governor’s garden. This
ladder required to he twenty feet long. Wc devo
ted to this part of our work nearly all our fuel ;
it consisted of round logs about eighteen or twen
ty inches long. We found we should want blocks
or pullics, and several other things, lor which a
saw was indispensable. I made one with an iron
candlestick, Ly means of half of tlie steel of the
tinder-box, from which 1 had made the knife ; with
this piece of the steel, the saw, and the iron legs
of our table, wc reduced tlie size of our logs : we
made tenants and mortices in them to join them
one into the other, with two holes through each,
and two joints, to prevent swagging. We made
the ladder with only one upright, through which
we put twenty rounds, each round being fifteen
inches long. The upright was three inches diam
eter, so that each round projected clear six inches
on each side of the upright. To every piece of
which tilt ladder was composed, tlie proper round
for each joint was ti- d with a string, to enable us
to put it together readily in the dark. As we com
pleted each piece we coneealrd it between the
floors. With the tools we had made, we comple
ted tbe tools of our workshop. We made a pair
of compasses, u square, n* carpenter’s rule, &c.
I &,e. and hid them in our magazine.”
De Lntude goes on to detail the precaution®
which he and his companion in misfortune took,
in case any of the jailors should lie listening, to
give feigned names for every thing they Used in
their work, and states the names used hy them
for each article. He then proceeds with his nar
rative These things being complete, we set
about our principle ladder, which was to he at
least eighty feet long. We began hy unravelling
our linen, shirts, napkins, nightcaps, stockings,
drawers, pocket handkerchiefs—-every thing which j mighty, who had snatched it ft Ire
could supply thread or silk. As we made a ball
we concealed it in Polyphemus, (the name they
called tlie hiding place) and when we had* a suffi
cient quantity, we employed a whole night in
twisting it into a rope; and I defy a rope-maker
to have done it better.* The upper part of the
building of the Bastille oveihaugs three or four
feet. This would necessarily occasion our ladder
to wave and swing about as we came down it.
enough to turn tlie strongest head. To obviate
this, and to prevent our fall, we made a second
rope 1IH) feet long, to bo reeved through a kind
of double block without sheaves, in ease the per
son descending should he supemled in the air
without being able to ger down lowcr.f Besides
these we made several other ropes of shorter
