M essrs. editors.—We hnveexatinied with,
considerable interest, n class of young ladies and
gentlemen under the instruction of Air. John McRae,
stated to have been engaged in the study of Engli-li
Grammar about twenty days. The facility which these
pupils manifested, in dissecting andconibinding any
sentence to parse; the manner in which they gave the
definitions, applied the rules of syntax and raised ob
jections against false construction—diseoxered such a
piat tical knowledge ol the science, as is not coinuioulv ,
attained bv pupils, by the usual drudgery, in many
months.—\\ herefore we iinh' sitatinglv sa\. that Mr.
M‘ Rae has honourably redeemed his pledge, by which
lie merits the patronage of the friends of education, as
tutor ol this branch of learning.

'I’lie IVoprictor, 9<Kuet«iue bcloi • he offered this Lot

the negroes, the other the lands, A - c., and as lie believ
ed. fur less (bar ball of it - value: I2»»w ever, vv itb a view
to lake them up he to re, or at ilia time they became
doc. nml proceeded on with hi* ui«*reuiitile business;
but he w as from misfortune unable to take up the mort
gages, ami having made many other creditors, und
perceiving that lauded property had lullou nearly liulf
it* valve, and finally finding for whet it would bring,
that even all liis properly would not satisiy bis credi
tors, unless lie gels its value; and having been thus fix
ed, und being anxious to do justice to hit other credi
tors, as well us the mortgagees, offered ids property m
said Lottery.
He applied to liis creditors for their approbation—
and aiuoiig-t them, one whose claim is quite inron»i-
di*ruble, refused, uud issued his fi (a (after which, o
thers issued and levied on the pioperty.) and it w hs all
sold, Ironi llie first Tuesday in lmt August, nml up to
the first Tuesday in September, und bought in by two
mortgages at comparatively small prices, but more
than the amount of the ii fa, and the property left with
the Proprietor to carry on the Lottery. Said credi
tor’s claim being younger than others, tbe money w as
paid to the elded claim, and he still not paid. On vi
siting Savannah, tbe Proprietor was taken by (bis same
creditor hy ca sa, and placed in confinement on the
J'.ld of last March, mid io the mean time the mortga
gee's attorney took possession of the negroes offered
in the scheme of said Lottery and sold them. It is
pro|ter to slate, that from the sales of tickets, there is a
larger iimoiifit of money oil hand than (he umouut of
the nine ne.jroea in the scheme in said Lottery. On
taking now m arlv two months to consult (both per
sonally and by letters) a number of gtn//emcn, the best
coarse to betaken, the Proprietor from tlieir advice,
as w ell as Ids own convictions lias, come to tbe con
clusion to continue the xaid Lottery, Gut admits lie
must have the aid of his country, lit* will present a
petition to Bn* neit Legislature as soon as it sits, with
a number of respectable signers, praying leave to draw
said Lottery, and to pay cash to prize bolder# instead
of negroes to tbe aruunul set Bu lb in tbe scheme ol
saiA negroes. Then justice w ill be done to piircha-
•iers of tickets, and to bis numerous creditors, and be
will ft*el grateful to bis country, which w ill verify the
old adage, “ a friend in need is a friend indeed ”
He doe* not make this appeal t<> the public with a
bofu* of obtaining the lame of Timoleon of old, by
means nfcliHuce and fortune—no, be only asks what
can lu* done by hi# Stati*—for its aid so us to act legal
ly—and only to maintain liis steadiness ol purpose uud
firmness nf mind, by which, although poor, be will bi:
able to pa*# tbe remainder of liis days, neither to be
grieved w ith past pro«|M*rity. nor to be broken down
by present or future advenily, tint to be gratified for
having the satisfaction of doing justice, and lor the fid
lowing very go -d reasons—it w ill balance bis affairs,
restore his credit, satisfy bis creditors, and to injure
neither individual nor country in Ibis peculiar case.
It is iberetorc requested, ttiat the purchasers of tick
et* remain jatisfiad. until it is known w hether the Le
