growing rather impatient, said in a quick under

leading out of the Inno info Mr. Fnucett's pad-
dock, and Evans was quietly plodding his way
homeward. To reach his cottage, he had to run
the gauntlet through the very throng of ihc fair,
amidst crowded tents, whence resounded the ill-
according sounds of the bagpipe and fiddle, and
the loud whoo! of the jig dancers, as they beat
with active leet the temporary floor, that rattled
with their tread. Jobrmy made short greetings
with those of his friends he encountered, and on
entering his house, plucked a couple of black,
business like looking sticks from the chimney]
helled them carefully, and measured tliem to-
gcihrr with an eye as strict as ever gallant paired

j his top coat over his shoulders, and departing by
the hac k door, rapidly cleared two or three small
gardens, and made at once for the fields. As Do
lan dropped from the high hank into the lane near
the bridge on one side, Evans leaped the gate
opposite.

ns dark clouds kept slowly pasting over her told

In the next moment they were toe to toe, in the
centre of the liule plain, both looking determined
nnd confident ; though an amateur would have at
once decided in favour of Dolan’s pose.
To describe the fight scientificnlly would be too
long an nlliiir, suffice it, that alihnugh Johnny's
agility gave hint the best of a couple of severe
falls, yet his antagonist's straight hitting and su
perior weight left him the tiling hollow; till five
quick rounds left Evans (leaf to time and tunc,
nnd as sick as though he had swallowed a glass of
antimonial wine instead of poteen.
Dolan carried his senseless foe lo the pool and
dashed water over trim by the hatful.
“Look at my watch,” was Johnny's first word,
on gaining breath.
“ I can’t tell the time by watch, cried Dolan, a
littlo sheepish.
“(Lve it here, mau,” cried Johnny, adding, as
he rubbed Ids lelt eye, the oilier being fnst closed

“Well, thank ye for that.” said Johnny; I wish
I may lie aide to return the ooiupiiment presently,

Within five minutes, armed with the well-seas
nned iwigs Johnny had brought with him, those
honest It-llows again stood front to front, and al
though Evans hail lost tnucb of (he elasticity of
carriage, which had ever been Iris characteristic,
when the alpecn was iu his hand und the shamrock
under his foot, in times past; although ills left
eye was closed, and the whole of that side of Ids
physiognomy was swollen und disfigured through
the mauling hr had received at the hands ol Dolan
who opposed him, to all appearance, fresh as at the
first, yet was his confidence in himself unshaken,
and in the twinkling of his right eye, a close ob
server might have read a sure anticipation of the
victory a contest of five minutes gave to him, for
it was full that time before Johnny struck a good
will blow, aid when it took effect, a second was
iiiicalicd for. The point of the stick had caught
Dolan fairly nu the right temple, and laying open
the whole of the face dowu to the chin, as il
done by a sabre stroke, felling him senseless.
After some attempts at recalling his antagonist
to perception by tbs hrook sidu without success,
Evans began to feel a little alarmed for his life,
and hoisting him on his back, retraced his steps to
the village, without ever halting by the way and
bore ills iusftisible burtkeu into tlio first house
lie catue to. where, as the devil would have i(, a
sister of Dolan's was silting, having a gosler with
the owner, the widow of oue Donovau over a “(akin
pot o’ lay."
“ God save all here, said Johnny, crossing the
floor without ceremony, and deposing Mat on the
widows bed,“\Vid’y by your lave, let Mat Dolan
he quiet here a bit* till 1 ruu down town for the
docior.
“ Dolan !” screamed ihc sister and tlie widow in
n breath, “Mat. is it Mat Dolan I that’s lying a
corpse here, and 1 his own sister, uol lo Know lie

Loud anil long were the lamentations that fol
lowed this unlucky discovery. The sister rushed
franlicly out to ihe middle of the road, screaming
and calling on the friends of Dolan, to revenge his
murder on Evans anil the orangemen that had de
coyed anil slain him. The words passed from lip
tolip, soon reaching down to ihe heart ol the fair
where most of the parties were about this time
corn'd for any thing.
“Johnny Evans,” cried the widow Donovan,
as he made in a few words the story known to her,
“true or not true, this is no place for you now,
the whole of his faction will be up here in n minute
and you'll be killed like a dog on the (lure; out
wid you, nnd down to the guard-house while the
coast's r.lear.
" I’d best maybe.” cried Evans; “ and I’ll send
the doctor up ihe quicker—but mind, widow, if
that boy ever spakes he'll say a fairer fight was ne
ver fought—get that out of him fur (he lore o'
heaven, Mrs. Donovan."
"lie hns'nt a word in him, I fear," cried the
the willow ns Johnny left the door, and with the
readiness of her sex, assisted by one or two
ehlerlv gossips, who were by this time called in,
she ba'iltcil the wound with spirits, and used every
device which much experience in cracked crowns,
acquired during the lifetime of Willy Donovan,
her departed lord, suggested' to her. Meantime
Evans, while milking his way down Ihrough the
village, hud been met, and recognized by ihe half
frantic sistei ol'Dolan &• her infuriated friends who
had been all for sumo time puzzled ul the absence
of him who was proverbial as
“ Best foot on the flnre,

"There’s the murderer of Mat Dolan, boys”
cried the woman, as some ten or twelve yards oIf
she recognized Johnny who was conspicuous e-
nnugh, wearing his shirt like a herald's tabard, as
in his haste he had drawn it on at 'lell kettle.—
With a yell that might have scared tlie devil, thir

door, there stood Johnny like a lion at bay, utter- •

Cufortuuatc Accident.
A few evenings since, as Miss Letitia L—, a
ohnrming and fashionable young lady, who is th.
pride and admiration of—herself—was dressing
for a ball, she met with a very remarkable and un
fortunate accident. She was undergoing the op
eration of • lacing,' as all beautiful young ladies
mii9t. She 1 a -d the na>v patent power machine,
which is su'd to wind up n lady's waist in th* motr
thorough and perfect manner.
Nut having time to raise the steam, with which
this lacing mat hine is ordinarily pur in motion,
Miss Letitia made a substitute of the black girl
I’hillis; who being n sttong handed wench, sha
thought might answer in the place of tho steam.
Phillis proceeded vqry well for some time, and
there wns every appearance ol the young lady’*
being wound up in the tuual perfect nod judicious
manner.
To complete the operation, hovever, a few more
turns of ihc machine were deemed necessary.
* Pull away, Phillis,' said theyoung lady, at she
stood before a glass nnd watched the rapid dimi
nution of her waist—“ pull away. Phijlis. A few
more turns, and I think f shall do."
My eyes!' exclaimed Phillis, ‘ I think you trill.
But how much furder you want to be screwed,
Missus. 7'
‘A little further yet, Phillis. I’m notquitain*
killing shape yet.’
‘Killing shape! My lod. Missus’ your chap*
kill you dead, aure as you live, yon go much fur-
tier.’
* A little more, Phillis; a few pulls more. You
know when the steam was on—'
* Fudge fur the steam ! Aim I as Strong, Ml*,
sus. as any kittle o' boiling water? If faint, J
think it great pity.'
‘Well, Phillis, pull away—that'* a good girl.*
‘I most pull the skin off my hands now. They
smart anil burn like any tiling. Hold on a mi
nute. Missus, while I put on a glove to fend my
hands.’
‘There! ymi careles drab you! I'm all un
wound again, by your letting go. Why didn't you
hold on till I was finished?'
'I beg pardon. Missus. Now I got my glovaa
on, 1 work to more advantage.'
* Well, spring to now, and makeup far allyoo'vo
lust.'
Phillis now exerted herself with great power
and activity. Never was a young lady mors per
fectly wound up without the sid of steam.
‘ I think that'll nearly do, Phillis,'said she, sur
veying the improved appearance of her waist with
great animation. ‘ A few turns more, and I
shall he satisfied. There! there—how small an*
I now ?’
* Bout size tlio bed post.*
1 So large yet! I can’t exactly see, myself. Sly
eyesight tails me, I think.’
* No wonder, Missus—it’s all squeexed oat.
‘ A little more, Phillis; and then ( shall make
the eyes of the young gentlemen water. Dou'C
you think I shall ?’
' Mv gracious, they no ace you at ail—you all
squcPZRil up to nothin.’
* There!—there! how small am InawP
*’ Bout small ns the chair-post.’
' One nor# turn, Phillis—a good strong anik.
and then 1 shall do.'
' I make it 'trong enough this time, I guess, any
how.’ So saying, the obedient, but. rather impa
tient wench sprang to with all her remaining
strength, when suddenly all* cried, * Something
give way. Missus !’
•Give way! shrieked the young lady, 'Oh.yoa
cruel wench you! you've cut me clean in two!*
On slacking her hand, and examining into th«
rase, Phillis found, sure enough, that she had
worked the machine with such disastrous effect aa
actually to have cut her mistress in two in the mid
dle. As fur her, poor wench, she was speechless
with grief and astonishment.
But the young lady—the speaking part of her—-
gasped out—I'm undone, I'm ruined ! I can't ge
to the ball to night! Bury me with—my—cor
sets—on—do. Phillis.’ She ceased to speak, and
we understand her last request has been Faithful
ly complied with.—M. Y. Transcript.

A somewhat ludicrous scene occurred yesterday
