Van Buren is hundred-eyed, and regards every re
mote object as an available agent who but lie
would think of making the goodwill of his Holi

rica ? Jackson beholds, in the Government, only
the Executive, himself; the hundred eyed Van
Buren forgets the distinct system of checks and
balances, and conceives the Government multipli
ed into a polypus, called majority, Jackson
pores over the Constitution, and rising, vows he
can And but one sensible idea in it, and that is
Veto; Van Buren sees so much beauty in the
Constitution under its various constructions, that
he holds both opinions on each disputed construc
tion Van Buren gloiies in tlie wisdom of the
Convention of 1787, because it tied so many
Gordian knots fur clever men to spend their
lives in untying; Jackson draws his Bowie-knife

Jackson is a loyal Tennesseean, of a class of
men who are the hearts of oak of America; when
one of them wishes to he elected to Congress, he
straightway publishes all his opinions downright
in a county circular, then goes round to the mus
ters and the county cnuris, and debates every topic
against his adversary (strong sense in homely lan
guage, garnished by allusions lo Roman history—
pardon him this vanity, reader !) amidst the dm of
backwoods retorts, the clatter of wandering auc
tioneers, the neighing of horses with renowned
pedigrees ; and ns the sou goes down he is hailed
by the result—a clear majority of the farmers' votes
spontaneously given, no concert, all lair play,
hoys ! Such is the way in which a Tennesseean
gets into public life. Van Buren alas! must he
