aunt ol* instruction ordinarily given them, as will be
seen by a reference to ilndr course ol study. This system
will vastly increase the labor of the Faculty ; this labor they
have however consented to undergo.
The adoption of this new plan has been caused by the pecu
liar state of the times. Though the amount on our subscrip
tion list is sufficient to warrant the commencement ot* the ,
work in its original form, yet from the present state ol affairs,
it would have been more than indelicate to call upon many in- j
dividualsd’or their subscriptions. On the other hand, many pa- |
rents have been making their anangemen'.s to send their sons j
to Midway during the next year. Such peisous ft would be j
painful to disappoint, yet it would be impossible to proceed |
for want of fund's in hand. The course now announced as be- j
mg adopted, was then proposed—that is, to bring the Acade
my and College un ler the government and instruction ol tlie j
same President and Professors. By this arrangement the ex- |
ponses of the Institution will Le sustained, and all difficulties ,
in its way removed.
The Board of Trustees take this occasion to say. thataf.cr l
this year the Steward's Hall will be discontinued. This is j
done, that there may be no hindrance in the way ol such per- j
sons as may wish to move to Midway for the purpose oi taking ;
boarders.
The Trustees dose this communication
We having witnessed tin* performance of Mr. T. T,. Smith s
new Brick Machine, invented by Calvin Waterman, no.v m
operation in this place, take pleasure in recommending it to
the public. The fact of its performance is its best recom
mendation. We timed it, and find that with new moulds and
inexperienced hands, it made at the rate of two thousand three
hundred and sixtv eight brick per hour. By moulding ten
hours in the dav, it woeffd turn out twenty three thousand six
hundred per da-,-. It requires six boys to hear of! and tour to
sa „d the moulds, Ac., together with four grown men. Urns
fourteen hands are sufficient to make the above named quantity
of the most beautiful brick per day.^^
