Southern Tonic.
Coster & Coxe, the inventors of this celebrated medicine
ro® ® re*idenee in the South, and from the nature of theiv
vocation, have been brought immediately into contact with the
Agur and Fever in its mc:;t obstinate forms, and have fr e
quently been compelled to witness the emirfe want of success in
the practice of the most skillful physicians. Tlie usual and po
pular mode of treating this disease, has been, first to evacuate
the stomach and bowels, and then to resort to the use of tonics—of
which class of medicines a very greet variety have been recom
mended to the public, all of which have had dieir advocates
and that which has been by far the most popular one, has been
Peruvian Bark atid its preparations, particularly that of Qu',.
nine. There are insurmountable objections to die administra
tion of quinine, as to most individua Is, (when carried to a sain-
lary point,) it produces a roaring in die ears, nausea, and a head-
ach, very similar to a bilious headach; and when it effects a cure
it is seldom permanent. It was the hope of avoiding this state
ol things that induced us to try the “ Southern Tonic,” and we
are hapj-y to say that its success has surprised even us. As
diere is uo arsenic, mercury, or any thing in the least hurtful to
the human constituuon in it, there can be no objection to the ad
ministration of the Southern Tonic to the most tender infant:
indeed, it will be found the most delicate and effective medi
cine known in those cases of disorganized stomach and bowels,
and of general debility, which so frequently present dremseivej
in children. We subjoin die opiuions of a IVw individuals :

Park’s Bridge, April 1st,.1837.
Gentlemen—I received a lew lines from yon, dated March
29th. requesting me to make a statement to you of all the tenefi
cial information that has fallen under my notice from the use of
Coster & Coxe s Southern Tonic. I can but say to you,
that from the limited experience I have with the Tonic,"and
as far as I have used it, I am well pleased with tlie article.
The reason I was induced to make a trial of the Tonic, was
my having some patients who, from idiosyncracy of constitu
tion, could not bear the quinine. I was compelled to resort to
some other remedy, and seeing iu die papers this article highly
recommended, I resolved to give it a trial, consequendy I or
dered half a dozen bottles from Mr. Powell in Milledgeville;
and in using this Tonic, I found it necessary to administer in
larger doses than what is directed by the proprietors. By this
means I was enabled to check the intermitting fever, in every
instance, where it had been given according to directions. I
liavo also used this article with considerable benefit in chronic
complaints, where there was hectic fever. I have now a pa
tient under treatment affected with chleosis; she is rapidly
convalescent. The patient, when I was called to see her, rwn
unable to get out of bed, with alarming hemorrhage from the
nose. She has been treated with Peters’ pills and this Tonic.
I ought to have observed, that diis young lady Has been afflict
ed with this complaint for the last six or seven years, and has
taken medicine from various physicians without any benefit.
She is now in better health than she has been in five yeara
previous, and I think will, with perseverance in the use of this
article, regain her former health; but the result of this case
shall be reported to you, and all other effectual results which
shall come under my notice. You are at liberty to use this
letter, or any extract from it you wish.
I am yours, with respect,
THOMAS K. SLAUGHTER.
From, our Representative to the Legislature, Col. Jno. A. Campbell.
Gentlemen :—No medicine stands so high in my estimation as
yonr Southern Tonic, for the cure of Ague and Fever. I used
it at first by the advice of my family physician, with success,
and its effects upon more recent cases have been equally grati-
fying. Yours truly, JNO. A. CAMPBELL.

Montgomery County, Dec. l, 1835.
Messrs. Coster & Coxe -.—Dear Sirs—I feel gratified by
this opportunity of testifying to the merits of your Southern
Tonic. I have used it in many cases in my white and colored
family, and not one case failed. In short, I assure the public
that it is, in my opinion, the best mediciue for the cure of Fever
and Ague now iu use. Very respectfully vours,
WILLIAM M’LEMORE.
From Major 3. B. Morse.
Dear Sirs :—I had been afflicted with Ague and Fever or
a long time, and although the remedies which were prescribed
gave me temporary relief, yet none removed die cause of the
disease, and thereby permanendy cured me till I used your
Southern Tome. It did so. This gave me great confidence in
it, and as I saw that you had recommended it in cases of debili
ty, general weakness, and inactivity of the digestive ornans,l
induced my wife, who had been laboring under these svmp-
tomsfora year or more, to try it. She used one botde wiui
some evidences of an increase of healdi, and a few botde*
more, taken in moderate docses, enurely cured her.
Respectfully ycum, J. B. MORSE.

ern Tonic is unprecedented. It has been anxiously
sought after by all classes in all parts of the United States, and
its widely extended distribution has been owing to the many
requests received from every section of the South and South

try but a few years since, it is now found in all the principal
towns and villages in the Union, and its virtues as a cure for
Ague and Fever^nd as a general Touic, are appreciated by all
who have used it. Being as it professes, a compound of
Southern Vegetables, it is needless to ofler the assurance that
there is no Arsenic, Mercury, nor any diing in the least hurtful
to the human constitution in it. It will be found a valuable
Medicine in all cases of Dyspepsia and disorganised Stomach
and Bowels, and patients convalescing from Bilious Fever, will

This valuable Medicine, the discovery of a Medical Prac

unfailing success stood the test, of twenty years’ experience
in the extensive and highly respectable practice of the pro
prietor, is, at the earnest solicitation of a number of gentlemen
of long and high standing in the profession, now introduced to
the notice of the American Public, with full conviction, after
the most deliberate and careful investigation, that this truly
valuable composition, will be found highly efficacious in re-
moving and preventing all those complaints prevalent in the
Western Hemisphere, and it is also hoped as a preliminary
step to check the evils and fatal consequences arising from
the use of the numerous deleterious nostrums forced upon die
public, by the aid of advertisements, and other frauds, by a set
of mercenary, unprincipled pretenders, (totally ignorant of
Medical science,) to an extent unparalleled in die History of
Medical Quackery.
