*-ud to he an efficient agent in counteracting the effect of
ars-nic when Risen into she stomach. Iti a recent case,
in this c.itv. it was advantageously administered bv Dr. R.
J! Thomas to a man named Biddle, who had inn mistake
swallowed twenty grains of arsenic. The first dost- given
was half « fluid ounce of the hydrate in the wet state,
about the consistence of cr.sm, in a tumbler of cool w a
ter which was six hours after the arsenic had been swal
lowed. At the same time a large d so of magnesia was
given, which was repeated every two hours. The doses
of the hvdrute were repeated every ten or fifteen minutes
in two ounces of water. In the course of ten hours the
patient was c.eishi r. .1 out of danger, ha'i :g taken eight
ounces of the suspend -d hydrate, and three or four doses
of magnesia.—Providence Courier.
Uses of Hops ts Domestic Economy.—It is a fact,
although perhaps not generally kr.ow-n, that the young
shoots of imps, if cut in the spring, when they are five or
six inches high, are but little inferior to asparagus, w hen
rooked in the same wav. They arc said to be diuretic;
nnd taken in an effusion, to be good against the scurvy.
A decoction of the root of hops is considered as good
a sudorific as sarsaparilla. The smell of the flowers
are found to lie soporific. The herb will die wofd yellow.
From the stock a strong cloth is made in Sweden. The
fibres are equally as strong and fine as flax, but it requires
