has a genteel appearance, is an Englishman by birth, and a
cabinet maker by trade ; he has a mark or lump o.i the little
finger of fue right hand, occasioned by the etc of the plane,
his finget3 are very long and keen, atnl what is very ramarka-
ble. his thumbs are very short and stubbed. He had on a
mulberry colored coat, and pantaloons made ot Kentucky
jearrs, light boots, with very iow or no lieels. • James SMITH
is a native of South Carolina, about 25 or 26 years ut age, sy X
dark complexion, black hair, and black whrskeis, about 3 j
feet 3 or 4 inches high, weighs about 150 or 160 pounds, well
set, witii a round full face, fond, of liquor, and much addicted
to intemperance, lie wore a black camlet frock coat, darts
colored striped summer pantaloons, and old white bat.
Moulton was in Jail for Negro stealing, and Smith for
Horse stealing. The public would do well to be on their
guard against those men, as they are noted villains, and
whoever will arrest and confine said men in any Jail, so tb it
they may be brought to justice, will confer a tavor on the
community, and shall receive the above reward or a propor
tionable part for either of them.

River, in South Carolina, on the night of tiie 30th Septem

perty of Harrison W. Riley, of this place, and by him,
sold to saiil Baxter, nt Calhoun (Tenn.) where he is trans
acting mercantile business.) In consequence of which
fact, Mr. II. W. Riley, has been churged with a participa
tion in tiie transaction. We can, and we wish only to ask
the suspension of public opinion, until all the facts ure
known to the case. We do this because we Teel convinced
that Mr. II. YV. Riley, has suffered and is now suffering
unjustly, and that justice should be rendered to uil with
out regard to partialities. The negro was apprehended
through the vigilance of the citizens of this vicinity, and
no man was more prompt and untiring, than Mr. H.
W. Rilev. either in procuring the arrest of the negro, or
in securing the money of the deceased, of which we ob
tained thirteen hundred and eighty one dollars and seventy-
five cents, a horse and some clothing, all of which was
handed «*ver to the relations and friends of deceased, who
whilst they reiruiim d here, seemed thankful for tin* atten
tions and assistance rendered them. When they left, Mr.
H. W. Riley left for his before mentioned concern ut Cal
houn, Tennessee, the present Cherokee Agency. And
these reports being so uumerous and so dark, and as we
believe so unfounded ; and believing that an enlightened
community is disposed to do justice, we beg to forestall
public and private opinion, until ull the circumstances of
the case slinli be collected, when we confidently believe,
that our fellow citizens will accord to Mr. H. W. Riley,
that which none of us who have the best right to know
the circumstances doubt, to w it, that he Riley, is not only
innocent of the charges, but is entitled to great credit, for
his untiring exertions in arresting and bringing to justice
the Murderer.
