Came is «ir granary, and ’nwaifi the eaves
EsmynA la make a rest, and there did bring
Wet earth, and Mjaw aixl learn.
Day after day sba loilnl
With patient heart; but ere her work wsarruwn’d,
Some sad mishap the liny fabric apnik-i.
And dashed it ta the groumi.
But n<« cast dovr.i. forth from the place
And, with her mate, freali esuk aud grasses bro’t,
And built her nest anew*.

The last s»fr feather on its ample ft.mr,
When wicked hand or chance hud waste.
And wrought the rain o'er. /
But still her heart she kopl.
And toiled again; and last niglii, bearing calls,

During tbe laet week in September,
1836, the first successful camp-meeting
was held in Eastern Texas. I employ tbe
epithet “successful,” because severe} pre
vious failures had apparently tendered aH
f Sorts of a like kind perfectly hopeless.—*
Indeed, the meridian, at the period, was
moat uncongenial to religious and moral
enterprise. The country bordering on the
Sabine bad been occupied rather than set
tled by a clasf of adventurers almost as
wild as the savages whom they bad scarce
ly expelled, and the beast* nf prey which
still disputed their domains of primeval
forests. Professional gamWers, refugees
from the jail, absconded debtors, outlaws
from every land, forgers of false coin,
thieves, robbers ami murderers, interspers
ed among a race of uneducated hunters and
herdsmen, made up the strange social mis-
cellatty; without courts, or prisons, nr
churches, or schools, or even the shadow of
civil authority ot subordination—a sort of
unpi incipled pandemonium, where fierce
passion sat enthroned waving its bloody
sceptre, the bloody bowie kuife ! Let no
one accuse me of exaggeration, for the sake
of dramatic effect; 1 ton speaking now of
Shelby county—that home of the Lynchers
—the terrible locale, where ten years later,
forty persons were poisoned to death at a
marriage supper.
It will be obvious that, in such a commu
nity, very few would be disposed to pat
ronize camp-tneciings; and accordingly a
dozen different trials, at various times, had
never collected an hundred heaters on
any single occasion. But even these were
not allowed to worship in peace ; uniform
ly, the first day or night, a band of armed
desperadoes, headed by tbe notorious Walt
Foeman, chief judge and executioner of
tbe Shelby Lynchera, broke into tbe altar
and scattered the mourners, or ascended
the pulpit and treated the preachers to a
gratuitous robe of tar and feathers!—
Hence all prudent evangelists soon learned
to shun the left bank of the Sabine, as if it
had been infested by a cohort of demons ;
and two whole years elapsed without any
new attempt to erect the croea in so peril
ous a field.
At length, however an advertisement ap
peared promising another effort in behalf
of the gospel. The notice was unique, a
perfect backwo<Ml.i curio-ity. both as to its
tenor and mode of publication. Let roe
give it verbatim el literatim—
‘ Birbecue Camp Meeting.
“There will be a Camp-Meeting, to com-
mence ibe last Monday of this month, at
I the Double Spring Grove, near Peler Brin-
( sen's in the county of Shelby.
“The exercises will o|>en with a splen
did barbecue. Preparations are being
made to suit all tastes ; there will he a good
barlrecne. better liquors, and the best of
Gospel ! Paul Denton,
“Sept 1, 1836. Missionary M. E. C.”
This singular document was nailed to the
door of evety public house aud grocety ; it
was attached to the laigest trees at the in-
terseclioiis of all cross roads and principal
trails; and even the wandering hunters
themselves found it in remote della of the
mountains, miles away from the smoke of
a human habitation.
At fiist many regarded ibe matter as a*
hoax played off by some wicked wag, in
ridicule of populat credulity. But ibis
hypothesis was negatived by the eiatements
of Peter Brinson, proprietor of the “Dou
ble Spring Grove,” who informed all in
quirers, “that he had been employed and
paid by a stranger, calling himself a Meth
odist miuionaiy, to provide au ample bar
becue at the period'and place adveitiaed.”
“But tbe liquor—the better liquor—are
you to furnish tbe liquor too Y* was tbe in
variable question of each visitor.
“The missionary said he would attend
to that himself!” replied Brinson.
“He must be a precious orginal,” was
the genetal rejoinder. A proposition
which most of them afterwards had an op
portunity to verify experiment a My.
I need hardly add that an intense ex
citement resulied. The rumor took wings,
fl>-w on the wind, turned to a storm—u

planter.
‘Well, I suppose we must wait for him ;
but put the barbacue on the boards; Iub
as huegry as a starred w«df.*
*1 cannot till the missionary comes ; the
barbacue is hia piopeity.’
A fearful light blazed in Foeman*! sjn,
as he took thtev steps towards Brinson,
and faitiy shouted, “Fetch the meat in
stantly, or I'll fill your own stomach with
a dinner of lead and steel !’
This was the ultimatum of one whose in*
thority was tlm only law, and the planter
obeyed without a murmer. The smoking
viands were at ranged on the tables, by a
score nf slaves, and the throng prepared to
commence the sumptuous meal, when ■
voice pealed from the pulpit, loud ae to
blast of « trumpet in battle, ‘Stay gentle*
men and ladies, till the giver of the berbffi*
cue asks God’s blessing !’
Evety heart started, every eye was di
rected to the speaker, and a whisperless si-
ence ensued. Km nil alike <t «tc struck by
his remarkable a|>peara«ce. He was al
most a giant in stature, though scarcely
twenty years ot t.ge : his hair daik as to
raven's wing, flowed down his immense
shoulders in masses of natural ringlets,
more beautiful than any ever wreathed
around the jeweled brow of a queen by to
labored achievements of butnsn art; hie
eyes black as midnight, beamed like stare
over a face pale as Parian marble, calm,
passionless, spiritual, and wearing a singu
lar indefinable expression, such as might
have been shed by the light of a dream
from Paradise, or the luminous shadow of
an angel's wing. Tbe heterogeneous crowd,
hunters, gamblers, homicides, gasad in
mute astonishment.
Tbe missionary prayed, but it sonaded
like no other prayer ever addressed to tka
throne of the Almighty. It contained bo
encomiums on the splendor of the divine at
tributes; no petition- in the tone of com
mands ; no oi isuns for distant places, times
ot objects ; and no implied instruction SB
to the ad it'in isi ration of the government o£
the Univetse. It related exclusively to
the pte>etii people and the present boor;
it was the cty of a inked soul, and that soul
a beggar for the bread and water of heav
enly life.
He ceased, and not till then did ( become
conn-ions of weeping. I looked around
through my tears, and saw a hundred ftfff
wet as with rain!
•Now my friends, partake of God*s gifts
at the table, and then come and ait down
and listen to His Gospiel.*
It would be tmpos-ible to describe the
sweet tone of kindness in which those
simple words were uttered, that made him
oulhe instant five hundred ftiendsi Otoe
heart howevei, in the assembly, was mad
dened by the evidences of the preacher's
wonderful power. Col. Watt Foemae, ex
claimed in a sneering voice; “ Mr. Paul
Denton, your reverence has lied. Yoa
promised us not only, a good barbacue, but
better liquor. Where is the liquor ?”
‘There !* answered the missionary in
tones of thuuder, and pointing hia motion
less finger at the matchless Double Spring,
gushing up in two strong columns with a
sound likes shout of joy from tbe bosom
of the earth. ‘Tbeie/ he repeated with a
look terrible as lightning—while his ene
