SOUTHERN RECORDER.
Brian to-the Sight.
B? H. W. LONGFELLOW.
.
I heard the’frailing garments of the night
Sweep through I for nmrjild IirAs !
I saw her sable skirts all fringes with light
From the celestial walls !
I felt her presence, by its spell of night
Stoop o’er me from above ;
The Calm, majestic presence of the Night,
As of the one I love.
I heard the sounds of sorrow and delight,
The. manifold soft chimes
That tilled the haunted chambers of the Night,
Like some old poet’s rhymes.
From the cool cisterns of the midnight air
My spirit drank repose;
The fountain of perpetual peace flows there,—
From those deep cisterns flows.
O holy Night ! from thee I learn to bear
What man has borne before !
Thou lavest thy finger on the lips of Care,
And they complain no more.
Peace ! Peace ! Orestes-like I breathe tliis prayer,
Descend with broad-winged flight,
The welcome, the thrice prayed for, the most fair,
The best-beloved Night.
Lord Erskine’s Estimate of the Scrip
tures.—“ For my own part, gentlemen, I
have been ever deeply devoted to the truths
of Ckristainity, and my firm belief in the
Holy Gospel is by no means owing to the
prejudice of education, (though I was reli
giously educated by the best of parents,)
but it arises from tne most continued reflec
tions of riper years and .understanding. It
forms at this moment, the* great consolation
of a life which, as a shadow, must pass
away ; and with outfit, indeed, I should
consider my knjg course of health and
prosperity, (peHt ips too long and too inter
rupted to* be good for any man,) only as
the dust which the wind scatters, rather as a
snare than a blessing.' —Trial (f T1 illiams
for publishing Paine's Age of Reason.
‘Father, what does a printer live on V
‘Why, child?’
‘Because you said you hadn’t paid him for
three years,*and still take the paper.’
‘Wife, spank that child.’
