COTTON-SEED DRILL.
A LL Planters have realized the want of a ma
chine to drill Cotton Seed with regularity and
certainty. One that would operate equally well on
every kind ot land, and at the same time be so sim
ple in construction and operation that it could be
used by negroes without liability of getting out of
order. A Drill which we If tutu possesses all these
qualities, we now offer to the planting community.
After a thorough trial for the last two years iu dif
ferent hands ou ail kinds of land, we ivuuld state
some of the advantages to be derived from their use.
1st. The saving of-seed, which v ;U' am. ul; to
enough in planting one hundred acres, to pay for
the machine.
2d.The saving of labor in planting, one hors" and
hand only being require^ to open the furrow, drop
tlie seed and cover from seven to nine acres per
day.
3d. The great saving of labor in chopping out,
the>«ced being deposited in a line one after another.
4th. The great saving in subsequent hoe work,
owing to the fact that any plow-hand can, in siding,
cover all the first crop of grass in-tfie drill, however
small the cotton may be, without injuring the stand.
These advantages all farmers will appreciate;
and below we give some certificates, from which
the public can learn how these Drills are apprecia
ted hy.gentlemen of tie- first standing in our section
of the State—all practical farmers, who have thor
oughly tested them, and are consequently fully
competent to decide on their merits.
Certificates.
Tiffs is lo certify iluii 3 pi.inieii one hundred and sixty
acres «>! collon v, ith lianeiaH and Aiercer's Planters, and
I consider them superior to any ming of the kind 1 have
ever seen or tried. The saving of seed alone would pay
for the tiiacbines in a season or two, and J-tuink a hand
an dll one itird more Loci’ g than he enu kt in cotton
planted the common way. S. L. BARBER.
I.« county, Cieo , July 13!h, 18.15.
Messrs- Ituudall tf Mercer—Gentlemen; In reply to
yonrs of lilts date, I can say wiih satisfaction, that I have
used your Cotton-Seed Urill.- on tlie farm of D. A. Y r ason,
Esq., with great success. I consider them to be of great
vaiue* They are a saving of about one third of the labor
of cultivation, about two or three bushels of seed to the
acre in planting, and a great saving of labor in plaining,
as thev open tlie furrow, drop and cover the seed with
one horse and hand. I think tiiem worth one hundred
dollars a piece to any planter that plants full crops ol
cotton. As for myself l w ould uot plant a crop oi cot
ton without them for no consideration in ihe bounds of
reason. Yours, very respectfully.
A. J. BARKSDALE.
Lee c unty, July 12th, 1855.
I have used Randall <5c Mercer's Cotton Planter two
masons and consider them of g eat value to ti.e fanner.
1 save seed enough each year to pay for the Piantets
then I save at least one-third the labor of cultivation, as
the cotton is sowed in so narrow's line that with good
plowing there is b >X little hoe .work needed. Therein
also a saving ol hands and horses in planting. I should
say they were worth one hundred dulla s each, and re
commend every farmer to use them.

Col.J II Wilson — Sir : This is to certify that I have
used Raitdsil& Mercer’s Cotton-seed Diili of your man
ufacture, and an so wed pleased with tnem that I would
recommend all planters who have not tried them, to
give them a fair trial. Where the Drills are used there
is a great deal oflaJ>or saved in cultivating a crop, owing
to its being so uniform in the drill, the plowiug can be
done much better, and with greater despatch, conse
quently the hoe work is lighter, as good plowing super
cedes the necessity of a greatdealoi hard hoe work.
K. BRASWELL.
This is to certify that I used one of Randall & Mer

ana wes well pleased. I have used five of them the pre
sent year, planting my entire crop and am Still better
pleased. Th- re is a sa ving of between two and tnree
bushels of seed to the acre in planting, besides one horse
and one hand with these Diills does the work of three
hands and two horses. Then there is a saving of one
third of the hoe woik tlie cotton being in so straigluanri
narrow a row. I consider them worth one hundred dol*
isrs each to any planter, and recommend all to purchase
and use them. WM. H. OWENS.

tfessrs. Ito'.d'PL tf Mercer—Gentlemen : I have used
e’glitoi' vnttr Cotum-secd Drills mtnititertuIecj by J. H.
Watson, «»u Col. Joseph Bono's Fowl Town plantation.
I am nuioli pleased -«it’n them, having realized great
saving of seed, oo iaborin platUtBp and chopping out, and
the hands at the first siding could go over at least one
third more itr a day, and do iletter work than in cotton
planted iu the best v.-tty l could plant with colter and
block. I have no hesitation in giving it as my opinion
that; in the use of your Drills there ts a saving ol one-
third of tiie labor ofou Itivatittg a cotton crop. Coi. Bond
is pleased with them and will coutioue their use.
Yours, respectfully, JAMES CHEEK.
Fowltown, Geu., July 9ih, 1335.
This is 'o certify that 1 have used two of HandallA.
Mercer’s Cotton Planter-, and have no hesitation in say
ing that they will do. Tiie saving ol' labor iu planting is
an object, the saving of seed is an object, and the Colton
stands iu such a narrow d-lil that it may almost be kept
clean without the hoes. There is nothing to equal them
iu planting cotton. YVM. B. KEY'NULDS

T have used Randali & Mercer's Cotton seed Drill
which I purchased ol Col. .1. H. YY'aisott. aud think they
are the best machines now in use- I am satisfied there is
a great saving in seed and a greater saving in work. I
am fully - alistied there is one-third of the hoe work saved.
Try litem, and any reasonable man will be satisfied they
are worth more than three times tho price they are sold
for. PHILIP WEST.
