5l.ijarlj.ul.tu3fll» !—MORE THE CHUFA FOIL HOG LIGHT! ! We hnve on several occasions rcc- otnmeinle<l llie cultivation of ilie china, as a valuable food for boss. In corrob- eration of all we have said, we pub.i>b the following, which we find in the Mo bile Advertiser and Register: Dear Sir : In reply to your inquiry regarding the value ol the chula as food for hogs, we will say— That after several years’ experience, we regard the chufa as the best crop that can be grown on our light, sandy soil for the raising of hogs. The chufa requires but little labor in its culiiva- tion, grows best on dry, sandy soil, it very poor (as most of our pine woods are,) should be manured just as if to be cultivated in corn. An ordinary yield is from two to three hundred bushels to the acre.— One acre of good chufa will fatten ten hogs for po r k, and one acre will furn ish sufficient food for ten of your stock hogs for five to six months, say from first of October to first of March. The course I prefer in fattening on them is to allow the hogs to go into the field pf chufas and remain but half an hour in each day, and then have them turned out. When the chufas become scarce, allow them to remain an hour, then two hours, and towards the close they’may be allowed to go in and out at pleasure. 1 regard the first of March as a suit able lime to plant. The drills should he five feet apart, and the seed should be dropped (»ne foot apart in the drill. After they have come up, cultivate with a sweep or hoes. They must be kept clear of grass and weeds. Some persons have had fears that, if once introduced into a plantation, they could not be reaidly controlled or exterminated if desired. No fear need be entertained on this subject, for they are much more reaidly killed, than the ordinary crab grass. Respectfully, Benj’n Toomer. The longitu dinal seam of two baskets meet on the centre of the bale, and are there unite.I by wythes. The cotion is thus com pactly and securely hound, and there is no possibility of breakage or waste, unless the entire bale be involved. The expense is scarcely more than the cost of labor to the employee.
