fi'bat Mr. Stephens has comforted the

tie think it dne this distinguished gen-
fipjnan to mv, that the word “accummo-
iiliw.’’osed by us last week in reference
talk proposed offer of-negotiations by
otrGovernment, to close the- war, was not
intended to imply that he was capable of
favoring any terms inconsistent with his
fidelity to the Southern cause. We do not
concur in tho opinion which we have frt"
gently heard expressed of late, that Mr.
Stephens is in favor -of reconstruction ra
ther than prolong the war, if fair guaran-
tees can be had from the North, and that
b would sanction a Convention of the
States Xorth and South to agree upon
ttrffls. We have no such idea of Eis in
clination or his policy, and believe that
Mr. Tffrhecs lias entirely misconceived
the tics President in the remarks made
tyhim in the Federal Congress on 5th

by the profonndest sagacity. Sherman
has advanced too far from his base, to es

is only the work of time, as liis advance

EA 3 ' When Banks was first hemmed in
at Alexandria, it wty? reported that big ar
my was then 35,000 strong, the whole of
which, it was said, had capitulated to Gen.
Dick Taylor. Later advices from that
quarter slate that Banks, with 5,000 of his
men, had escaped, and that 8,000 had
surrendered with 20 guns and 1200 males.
We also learn that the whole fleet, forty
boats, had fallen into 'Taylor’s hands, and
that 2G of the boats were in fine running
order. If so, Gen. Taylor will not only
have pro\ed a Stonewall Jackson, but be
will have opportunity nt acting Paul Jones
on this great inland sea, the command #f
which will be fatal to Yankee rulo in the
West.
We doubt the policy of taking posses
sion of "New Orleans before we get the
Forts below, as the Yankees would send a
few iron clads from the North and shell
the city, perhaps burning it.

BLOODY MAY!
From tho unprecedented carnage in this

gia, and in other portions of the Confeder
acy whore the hostile armies have met,
we thihk the designation we have placed
at the head is eminently appiopriate. In
formation thus far authorises the following
estimate of the s*laiu in battle since the 1st
of May, ISG4.
Yankees 30,000
Confederates 10,000—40,000

HENRY M. LAW, ESQ.
We take great pleasure in saying that
this gentleman will deliver an Address in
Milledgeville during the present week,' of
which due notice will be given by hand
bills.
Mr. Law has visited the principal cities
and villages in the State, in aftl of the
Wayside Homes, and for charitable db*
jects. Largp audiences, have been -de
lighted, and the press has-spoken in tte
highest terras of bis eloquence. We hope
that a gratifying reception will be given
by a large attendance.
Siuce the above was in type, we have
been authorised to state that^the Address
will be delivered at Newell’s Hall, on
Monday evening. 23d inst. subject “Our
obligations to the Martyrs of the Revolu
tion.”
Tickets, $2 00. Proceeds to be ap
plied to the relief of our wounded soldiers
(rjT Gen. Lef. continues to repulse the
enemy at alj points* and to punish him se
verely. The telegraphic accounts are so
meagre that we prefer’having the descrip
tion from P. W. A, of tho Sawannah Re
publican, or some other reliable army cor
respondent. In our paper to day will bp
found a notice, somewhat in detail, of the
early battles, mostly from the Richmond
papers. Olir readers may feel assured
that all is working right in Virginia, in
North Georgia and in the West.
Gov. Brown, by proclamation in
another column, has required all the Mi
litia Officers in Commission to report im
mediately to Adjutant General Wayne at
Atlanta for orders, to assist iu repelling
the enemy now advancing towaid the cen
tre of the State.

SOUTHERN EXPRESS COMPANY.
The exact system and great usefulness
ot this company, have rendered it quite an
institution. Mr. Jacob H^as. the polite
and energetic Ageqt at Milledgeville, is
always at bis post, promptly serving those
who have business in. bis office. Ho has
rendered many civilities to the press, our
selves included,'for which we return our
acknowledgments. We Team that the
company receives Five Dollar Coufeder
ate notes at par for freight, which is quite
an accommodation.
The Confederates have retaken
Natchez and Baton Rouga, The recap
ture- o’f Vicksburg, though probable, is not
yet confirmed. It is said that Gen. iVl# v
gruder will boou occupy New Orleans.
UF 3 Charles J. Harris of Macon, late
■of the Conscript Bureau, has been elected
Colonel of the Third Regiment of Geor
gia Reserves.
Lj£* J The Columbus papers announce
the death of Mrs. Lucy Elizabeth Caianes
of that cit}-. She was a public benefac
tress, visiting and relieving the poor, aifd
her death is much lamented’. The funer
al procession from the Episcopal Church
was said to be the largest eyer seen in the
city.
Our columns are so filled with mil
itary matters, that we have no root*, to no
tice tjje proceedings of Congress as we
desire. Several important bills bav* been
introduced by Mss. Akiu, Blabford, and
other members of the Georgia Legislature.
Lieut. P. L. Fair, of the Baldwin Vol
unteoi'8, gratefully acknowledges the re
ceipt of 36 pairs socks for the Conj-
pany, from Miss II. Harris, Secretary of
the Ladies Relief Society. ^
We notice a proposition to collect
and publish in a volume the names o? all
persons in Georgia, who have made for
tunes by speculation and extortion since
the war commenced. The object, is to
hold up to “Posterity” the parties who
have been thus engaged. The gentle
man who offers to prepare the work has
solicited names, facts &c., to enable him
to complete it. As we take no part for or
against such a publication, we merely al
lude to the subject, leaving the compiler
(at Madison or in that direction) to work
bis through tho press when he is
ready for action.
BARTER AT^T URN WOLD 1
Planters and others who need wool hats
for their force, are referred to the adver-
tisementof J. A. Turner Esq. jn to days pa
per. Agood opportunity is afforded to barter
wool for the manufactured article, on terms
which appear very reasonable. We have
seen hats matjf at the shop of Mr. Turner,
and feel no hesitancy in recommending
the work. Parties who seud orders will
be dealt with upon the bquaro.
Idp The loss of the ene*my ^ battle
since the first of January, is computed
by the Macon Confederate at 116,000
men. ^
