\Ye have no desire to enter into a con*, j behind it that will blaze out to
troversy with our cotemporary of' the In- j
telhgencer. We only dissented from the j
broad principle as announced, that we were ■
the mere creatures of Congress. So we
are, if we will tamely bow our necks, and
never utter a word of dissent from any of
their iniquitous and unconstitutional
schemes, and vote for our own degradation,
8 tid acknowledge at the same time we are
the willing slaves to their behests. With
Judge Stephens, we are for doiug nothing
as a State, "in obedience to dictation.”—
If we have a voice, let it be beard ; and it
the bayonet is thrust between our wiil and
our rights, and the latter is the stronger,
then we are not even a dependant State,
but a people pinned to Federal Govern-,
meut by force, and it is but an empty aud
shallow device to submit any act of Con*
gress to us for rejection or ratification.—
Could we but implant onr spirit iu the
breast of every man calling himself a
Georgian, we would force Congress to an
issue very soon, either to recognize us as
an independent State, the equal of any
and all, or force that body to declare
Georgia a military dependency, without
circumlocution or implication. We would
stand before tbe world in a positive light,
aud not tbe indirect tools of Congress.
We want it understood, that what is
now being done, we do not recognize as
either constitutional or valid, and that we
strike now, though feeble be the blow, for
the rights of our State. Our cotemporary
has yielded, by his argument, everything
to expediency and policy, ignored every
right, and deliberately declared himself a
vassal. We don’t feel so, and it is equally
true, we don’t think so. We are lor re'
jectiDg every measure Congress has so far
offered us, and in rejecting them, we de<
clare ourselves an independent State, and
not a dependancy.
