NEW BOOKS.
We are again under obligations to
that most extensive and excellent pub

Religion; Character and Morals;
Languages ; Laws, See. A work full of
information. Also, illustrated.
“The elements ol astronomy,” ae
companied with numerous illustrations;

Southern Hemisphere, by J. N. Lock*

•‘Valerie Ayliuer”—abrilliaut Amer
iean Novel, by Christian Reid. “It is
the first work ol a young American
novelist of great promise, and very
decided genius. The scene of the nov
el is mostly iu the Southern States, in
the petiod immediately subsequent to
the civil war, cad the characters are all
Southerners of Maryland or Louisiana.
The style of the work is singular ani
mated and powerful, tbe characters
well drawn, the dialogue lively and
natural, end tbe story one of great and
sustained interest.
The author of “Valerie Aylmer,” in
this first effort, has made a most decid
ed hit, ami cannot fail to^be universal
ly recognized as one of the rising and
brilliant lights of American literature.”
Price in paper covers $1; in cloth

“Cornell’s Physical Geography,”
