From the preparations made, and the

attractive ever held in this State. Let

present. Extra trains leave this city j

“Circumstances beyond My Control.”
It seems not to be generally known
that an alarming epidemic has broken
out in this communnity, the end of
which no man may see. We say alarm
ing, not that any fatal affects has ap
peared, hut because of the mysterious
novelty of the disorder. The Doctor:
have not as yet diagnosed it, that w<
are aware of, though symptoms clearly
indicate an affection of the bram. It
first symptom is withdraical from l/t,
Good Templars, after which, a certain
unsteadiness of gait, flush about the eyes, !
apparent dizziness cf head, an air of
general dissatisfaction and sneaky ex- j
pression of face, supervene. A singular J
ieatuie in these cases is, that any in- |
quiry into the cause is sure to bring the j
response, “Circumstances beyond my 1
control.” Wo are no physician, yet
observation suggests that moral stamina
and the mental power are a sure prevent
ive of the strange disease. Only a few
have as yet contracted it, and wo hope
tho charity of our city will
required sympathy

Encouraging.—Wo are pleased to
learn that there is a Temperance Socie

whose lists show tho handsome number
of one hundred and fifty members.
Their meetings are held weekly r , and
much good has already resulted from the
movement.
Winter Coming—Large flocks of
Wild Ducks were observed last week,
passing over the city and pursuing a
Southerly direction. Tho appearance of
these visitors indicates the approach of
cold weather.
'•Old John Robinson,” a few days
since, gave a performance with his great
Circus and Menagerie at Richmond, A a.,
for the benefit of the Chicago sufferers,
which, after paying State tax, &c., net
ted over $300. Old John, not satisfied
with this, generously increased it to $500.
Look out for him with his big show on

In our notice of Prof. Coiien, the op

we created an erroneous impression in

Such was not the case. He had visited
