or i-’t JUl - —.v--i -;- TUESDAY. FDBEUAEY 20, 1872. Florida.—Impeachment of Gov. Seed. r ilu lower House of the Florida Le gislature has adopted articles of im peachment of the Governor, Harrison Reed, the most thievish of all carpet baggers, which suspends him and sears the'Lieut. Governor, Dr. Day. The Constitution of that Slate was m process of construction, under military rule, pending Andy Johnson’s impeachment. The, Convention, taking the cue from Ben Butler’s Bill, inserted a provision, suspending the Governor, whenever im peachment should be preferred. This truckling to Federal Radicalism proves fatal to Reed. lustead of having all the power of the Executive Department to protect him, as in two former instanc es, it is now all arrayed against him, for Day will keep him out, if possible. Day i- a weak ana unprincipled man himself, hut has not the malicious energy ol K eed. The same Legislature, by a large ma jority, has requested the IT. S. Senator, T. W. Osborne, to resign. Osborne has Leer, the managing man, the head cen tre of ljorida Radicalism. A coarse, gross, fat, dirty, blustering thief, lie has been the carpet-bag dictator of' the State. Two years ago, a feud sprung up be tween him and Reed, which has not been reconciled yet. The action of the Le gislature, probably, indicates a substan tial dissolution of the governing rings van rial) for Omaha, as ihc way-station between San Francisco, on the one side, and New York and Liverpool, ou tile other, is the suggestion of geographical and thermal superiority only. God speed those, who only can vitabze our advantages. The monopoly, denounced, is a mere chimera. Unjrotected by law, it is utterly harmless. New York is no hand-cuffed antagonist. Hitherto she enjoyed a monopoly of Southern trade- Philadelphia, thanks to I om Scott, now strives to compete. Baltimore prepares for increased eft’ >rt in the same direction. And when the Southern Pacific Rail road shall open a thoroughfare for the new-born commeice of the Japanese Islands, as well as that of China and the Western coast of the Union, Liverpool will most certainly enter the arena, as a new competitor, to he tollowed, perhaps, by Hamburg and Amsterdam. In view of such stupendous prospt cts, how idle to fear a little Philadelphia monopoly, so-called 1 Tom Scott would gladly multiply all these sources of patronage to his lines. Heaven forbid that tbis great frenchise should fall into the hands of’ picayune speculators, of the dog in- the-manger type. The Southern Banner and Mr. Clay. Brother Atkinson denies that he charg ed Mr. Clay with the “authorship of the Missouri restriction.” lie says, ‘‘Our language was that he (Clay) compro mised away the right of the Sonth to equality in the ter:Lories.” This is suggestivo of the difference “betwixt tweedie dum and twedle dee.” That A correspondent ol the Atlanta Sun I dissects Dr. P*Tier’s edition of W T el- ! The Methodist Bock concern at Nash- ! viile, was consumed by fire, on the 14th i insf. Loss 650.000. The English Treaty squabble is a' a j stand-still. There are no indications of an amicable settlement, in the conduct i of the Government, for the Government has done nothing but count its nine oid I rotting iron clads. Grant stares and waits for something to turn up. When it turns up, we will record it. The pa pers are trying to demonstrate the self- evident proposition, that Iliram has made a f—! of himself, in this matter, as usual. lie is said to be a self-made man, which is likely, as nobody else would have made such a man. Henry O. Hoy t, carpet-bagger, of Af- lauta, is i:i litnbo, at the instigation of the Investigating Committee of the Le gislature. That Committee don’t know the rudiments of “white-washing.” The Supreme Court, since the ap pointment of W. W. Montgomery to the Bench, has gone to work, in earnest, on the three hundred cases on their dockets. Gen. Toombs is President of “old Wilkes County Farmers’ Club.” We le.vn from the Floridian of last Tuesday, that Gen. A. K. Brother A. is equally mis- equality was compromised away by the enforcement act, and sentenced to $-50 Act of 1S20 only, with which Mr. Clay had no connection whatever, either as author or supporter, The Banner “in stanced the Missouri compromise as a Clay doctrine.” M-. Clay was the au 1 - thor of the Utah aud New Mexico Acts of 1S50. Now, the Kansas Nebraska Act of 1S54, supported by the whole Southern Democracy, declared that the Missouri restriction teas repialed by this identical “legi.-latiou of 1S5U,” of which Mr. Clay was the author. Jftheouly connection Mr. Clay ever had with the “Compromise,” was to repeal it, how- can the Compiomise be called “Clay tive Party in Florida, The total bank ruptcy of the State alone accounts for taken as to the origin of title “Great Pacificator,” as applied to Mr. Clay. the loss of adhesive power in the Radical! great tanh compromise of 1S33, ! which Mr. Clay successfully tendered to go, Holden, Bullock, Reed,— President Jaeksou and Air. But wisdom and industry will achieve it, in time. Tom Scott's Southern Eailroad Pro jects Are exciting the alarm of Southern editors very unnecessarily, as we think. Representing the Pennsylvania Central R. Ii. Co., and many other corporations and capitalists, from Boston to Tennes see, he has leased thousands of miles of railroad and is striving, by lease and otherwise, to extend his connections through the cotton States, and Texas to ! California. The Griffin Daily News j s muds a particularly loud note of alarm, The future “middle of the world” h; a 1 the “boa->conatrictor” of monopoly,! at length been discovered by the Editor th u prepaies to coil about the trade of of the Central City. It lies on the west toe South and lug it away to I hiladel- j bank of the Flint River, one mile be- fis.e and imprisonment for six mouths Dr. Daniels was ais:> convicted of a sim ilar offence and sentenced to thirty da) s’ imprisonment. The same paper announces the death of Airs. Harriet Baitzell, widow of the late Chief Justice Bihzell, aud a very amiable lady. ♦ * - Will Grant be re-nom:noted by the Republican Philadelphia Convention, is the interesting question of the day. It is clear aud growing rapidly clearer, that a majority cf his party is sick, ad nauseam, of his corruptions, Ac. Yet the probabilities are decided, still that his office holders will sway the Conven tion to his nomination. We hope so, with ail our hea t, believing snch result would contribute, more than any other thing possible, to the final bifurcation of the Republican Party. But actual experiment demon strates that line to be a failure, that uo wealth or enterprise cau remedy, whilst the equator occupies its present latitude. Nature works for the South, and her victory is recognized by Northern capi tal. The Southern line is less than half the length of the northern and compara tively free from the mountains and snows that obstruct its rival. These are suf ficient to determine the course of trans continental trade. Scott & Co. merely seek for themselves, individually, an in vestment that will pay. Philadelphia pays them nothing for peculiar privi leges in the line. Baltimore pays nothing. Philadelphia and Baltimore combined are unable to pay a sufficien cy to divert tlm trade from its natural cbannles. We are glad Tom Scott & Co. have taken it iu hand, for they have the mon ey and the vim to put it through. Nor do we care how rich they grow out of puhiic lands, uonated for this purpose. Cerlaiuly the wealth of the Pacific trade will debouch on Southern territory, and Galveston, not Philadelphia, will be the chief beneficiary. New Orleans, Savan nah, and Charleston will reap, from it, a prosperity, that their palmiest days never dreamed of. Tom Scott will never waste his substance in the vaiu effort, to stem the current. His sagacity perceives, and his enterprise mounts the flood, “that leads to fortune.” There is no essential community of in terest between the proprietors of great commercial lines and the inhabitants of the country, through which they run. Competition between New York and Puiladelphia, for the trade of the South west and Pacific, through the South, may reduce the profits of the competitors, but must multiply the commercial facilities of this section. The substitution of Sa- vast areas of land. Hence it is to he the centre. Quotl erat demonstrandum. He sends us marked arti cles, sufficient to fill up our little week- Iy ; but they are altogether too rnonot onous, for the general reading of our subscribers. “Finance” is a theme of especial interest, in so far as it relates to the acquisition of greenbacks ; but when the constant tenor is to misapply to us the Scriptural precept of taking “from him that hath not, even that which he hath,” the point is above our compre hension and discordant from our tastes Send us some jokes, Henry, that we can enjoy. If Tom Scott and his “Southern Trans- \ portation Company” succeed in securing j for themselves the millions of acres of public lands contemplated to be dona J ted to the Gompany that constructs the Southern Pacific Kailroid west of Texas, ! will not. their interest dictate that they | use every possible means to induce im j migrants to purchase homes from them ? !
