My Dear Brethren: In the provi
dence of Goil we are once more entering !
upon the season of Lent.
In a wu'ld ol sin and surrounded by :
temptations, we are required to be pure!
in heart, and to exhibit an example of!
holiness in life. Most wisely therefore,
has the church set apart a portion of!
each year in which we may review the
past, examine our present spiritual con

Gratifying.—W e note with pleasure,
that all of ibe churches in the city were
opened for Divine service ou last Sun
day. The fine weather attracted an un
usual number of worshippers, and the
sacred edifices were filled with large and
attentive congregations.
A Whole People's Opinion.— When a
nation of forty millions accepts and en
dorses as a Standard Restorative an ar
ticle that it lias had the fullest opportu
nities of testing during a period of twelve
years, who can he so absurdly incredu
lous as to doubt the excellence of the
preparation ? Plantation Bitters has
passed through this ordeal and is now
the most popular proprietary medicine
on this continent. It would be difficult
to find an adult of either sex between the
Atlantic and the Pacific, or between the
northeast cornel* of Maine and tlie Gulf
of Mexico, who does not know, either
from personal experience or observation,
that this renowned vegetable remedy is
the purest tonic and stomachic and the
fiuest alterative and regulating medicine
at present before the world. As a pre
ventive of, and cure for, diseases gener
ated by malaria, and as a specific for
dyspepsia, rheumatism, and all neivous
aad bilious affections, ii is admitted to be
fairly pronounced the Favorite House'

A Beautiful Woman.—Tho percep
tive faculty of women is usually keener
thau the same phrenological organ in
men. Women know that beauty rather
than genius is worshipped by the stern
er sex. A man may talk of the latter
to his lady-love, but the keenness of the
woman knows that he is thinking of the
former. Women are fond of admira
tion ; hence one of their longings is to
be beautiful. The grand secret of fe
male beauty is health, the power to eat,
digest aud assimilate a proper quantity
of wholesome food. Take Vinegar Bit
ters. It will cleanse the stomach, tone
the vital organs, give a perfect digestion.

Spring.— The several genial and
balmy days of last week have given the
cue to our notable house-wives, and the
ladies have abandoned the needle and

their places the hoe, the rake and the

SINKING SLOWLY.
Diseases that progress rapidly to a
crisis are not the only ones to be dread
ed. Canker or dry rot does not blast a
tree as suddenly as a stroke of light
ning, but unless arrosted, it destroys it
as certainly; and in like manner chronic
debility, although it does not kill with
the swiftness of yellow lever, is as sure
to sap the springs of life eventually as

vigorating medication. ’There is some
thing inexpressibly touching in tho spec
tacle of premature decay. Languor,
pallor, emaciation, depression of spirits,
and a distaste for exertion, are its ordi
nary symptoms, and they should be
promptly met by tonic treatment. The
best invigoraut and exhilerant that can
be administerad in a case of this kind is
Hostotter’s Stomach Bitters. The stim
ulating principle of the preparation rouses
the dormant energies of the system, and
the strengthening aud regulating proper
ties give a permanent and hcalthlul im
pulse to the vital forces thus brought it -
to play, The failing appetite is re
awakened, the process of digestion and
assimilation are quickened, the quality
of the blood is improved, the secretions
become more natural, and every organ
that contributes to the nourishment of
the body undergoes salutary change. By
these means the repair of the physical
structure is effected and its health aud
vigor restored. In no class of diseases
has the beneficent operation of the Bit
ters been more marked and striking than
in those characterized by general debil
ity and nervous prostration. Ladies af
fected with these ailments find in this
most wholesome of all tonics and cor
rectives the safest and surest means of
relief. It is strong to restore and pow
erless to injure. Such is the uniform
testimony of “clouds of witnesses.”

evil. 'The outward fast of the body is
also before God, except it be accompa
nied with the inward fast, which is a
mourning and a lamentation of tho heart.”
Let your fasting be the result of yonr
sorrow and sins, and an exercise of self-
control that by God’s hoi
avoid sin.
Lent does not relieve you from the or
dinary duties of every day life; your
lasting, thcicfore, should nev Cr interfere
with the faithful performance of those
duties.
•Bear ever in mind that fasting “of it
soli is a thing utterly indifferent it
will be valuable to you only so far as it
is a means to spiritual growth. It. will
aval, nothing to substitute one kind of
diet for another; you must deny the
flesh that it may be brought into subjec
tion to the spirit. Use, therefore, such
abstinence as you believe in
science before God to be
such subjection.
Again dear brethren, “examine your
fives and conversations by the rule of

eficial fo yourselves. Be n a ly not
rnereiy to « make restitution and satis
faction for injuries or wrong done by
you, but also to forgive others who have
offended you, as you would have forgive
ness of your offenses at God's hand.”
Yonr faithful pastors will afford you
frequent and, I trust so far as possible,
daily opportunities of attending the pub-
" 1 lie services of the church, that together
you may confess your sins, hear ‘ The
Declaration of Absolution,” unfie your
voices in prayer and piaise, hear read
the words of the Book of Life, rehearse
the articles of your belief, and listen fo
the words of Godly counsel. I beg you
to permit nothing save necessity to de
prive you of these blessed privileges.
Often too, I trust, upon the Sunday in
Lent, will God’s Priests bid you to par
take of “th-} most comfortable sacrament
of the Body and Blood of Christ.” With
draw not yourselves “from the holy sup
per ,” it is for the strengthening and
refreshing of your souls ; that strength
we all need ; let us not be ungrateful or
indifferent when a merciful Saviour of
fers us tbo means of obtaining it.
During the past yoar we have received
many and great blessings; let us be
merciful as we liave obtained mercy.
Remember the missionaries who are la
boring among the poor and needy. “Up
on the first day of the week let every
one of you lay by him in store, as God
has prospered him.” Deny yourselves
that you may give more liberally to
those “who minister about holy things.”
Let your mite boxes bear witness to
your generosity.
The poor, the sick, the broken-heart
ed are all about you ; remember God’s
love and the Saviour's mercies, and help
the poor, minister to the sick and com
fort the sorrowing, and then “ he Lord
shall deliver you in time of trouble.”
Finally, brethren, I urge you to ab
stain from all theatres, balls, private
parties, novel reading, mere ornamental
pursuits, unnecessary delicacies. “From
time so saved many an hour can be gain
ed in which to attend the divine serv
ices of the church, day by day, to use
extra private devotion, and to engage in
works of charity.”
Trusting that you will kindly receive
what has now been lovingly written, I
pray that “The God of peace who brought
again from the dead our Lord Jesus
Cluisf, the great Shepherd of the Sheep,
through the everlasting covenant, may
make you perfect in every good work to
do His will, working In you that which
is well pleasing in His sight, through
