Memorial Da j in Milledgeville
was & success. The weather was all
that could be desired. Joyous Spring,
so late escaped from the ice-bouds ot Live Drug Store.
Winter, “reaped fast repentance for her
first delay.” The sylvan choristers
wrought, as if for a wager. The delicious
rivalry of flowers filled the air with va*.
ried sweets; and the public pulse was
all-attune'l to the occasion. The pre
liminaries, as set out in our last, worked
smoothly to their design. At 4 o’clock
P. M., the M. E Church was systemati
cally jammed. After prayer and music,
Col. GiMevf., Jr , the orator elect, held
the atteution of the audience for three-
quarters of an hour, reviewing the glo-
ries and sorrows of the Confederate past.
Of the merits of the address, it will suf
fice to say, that the dense audience ob
served the stillness, almost of death, save
when occasional applause rendered its
homage to exalted sentiment. From the
Church, the crowd moved, in long pro-
cession to the cemetery—city officials,
firemen, Suuday schools and citizens—
and gathered about the Soldiers’ Monu
ment, in numbers, estimated above a
thousand. The decking of the cemetery
in floral drapery, was gorgeous, iudeed.
On every hand the evidences of tender
care challenged the visitor’s eye. The
adornments of the monument, the gate,
aud the central well, were especially
rich and profuse. Appropriate mottoes,
in black, white and green, spoke their
pure 6«ntiments, from every side—and
the beautiful vied with the picturesque,
in the multitude and variety of their de
signs, delighting and inspiring. The
whole Cemctry was a grand boquet,
wherein every soldier’s grave was a
blooming flower, and the chief charm
whereof was the living beauty moving
amid ita shrubbery.
An episode or two, at the monument,
deviating from the written programme,
deepened the feeling aud heightened the
enjoyments of the occasion. A native
of Milledgeville and now a distinguished
•on, by adoption, of Alabama, Col. J.
W. A. Sanford, by request of the com
mittee, addressed the assembly for thirty
minutes, in a speech that defies our des
cription. Briefly, without obscurity,
compactly, yet with easy elegance, he
presented the great conflict—the philos
ophy of its origin—the grandeur of its
prosecution—its direful results—the
multiform character of the Confederate
The Baldwin County Agricultural So
ciety meets on Tuesday, May 7th. This
is the regular monthly meeting of the
Society, and the resolutions establishing
the Milledg'eville Central Crop Obser
vation and Statistical Department will
be introduced, and the object of the
Department will be fully explained.
This is a question that does not con
fine itself to Baldwin county, and vre in
vite the planters of neighboring counties
to attend this meeting, for we wish to
see the plan succeed in Baldwin, and
every county in the State. Politics will
play no hand in this meeting.
Col, H. M. Acton.—We have re
cently enjoyed the pleasure of an inter
view with the above Lilliputian repre
sentative of the Atlanta “Constitution.”
In view of the fact that summer is rap
idly advancing, we could not but regard
him with a subdued degree of melancholy
interest. The last syllabic of bis name
fitly indicates his actual ponderosity.—

is the General Traveling Agent lias

SPECIAL NOTICES.
A NEW BEAUTIFYING AGENT.—All
Dentifrices had their drawbacks, until the Sa
lubrious Bark of the Soap Tree was brought
from the Chilian Valleys to perfect the flagrant
Sozodont, the most delightful article for the
teeth that a brush was ever dipped into.
“CHILDREN’S LIVES SAVED FOR 50
CENTS."—Every class of Croup can be cured
when first taken, by Dr, Tobias' Venetian Lin
iment, warrauted for 24 years, and never a bot
tle returned. It also cures Diarrhoea, Dysen
tery, Colic, Sore Throat, Cuts, Burns, aud Ex
ternal Pains. Sold by the Druggists, Depot,
10 Park Place, New York.
VENUS herseif would not have been beauti
ful if her complexion bad been bad. If beauty
is skin deep, it is necessary to secure aud re
tain that part of it; aud ladies, iust.ad of re
sorting to paints add powders, should remem
ber that an impure, blotchy, or sallow skin is
the proof of feeble digestion, or torpid liver, or
vitiated blood, for all which Ur. Walker's
California Vinegar Bitters is a safe, sure
and effectual remedy.
BURNETT’S COCOAINE.—No oils, neith
er pomades or alcoholic washes—foreign or do
mestic—can compare with Coeoaiue as a HAIR
DRESSING. It anchors the hair firmly in the
scalp—gives it new life aud lustre—and ren
ders it the “crowning glory” of both sexes,
old and young.
PRATT’S ASTRAL OIL.—More accidents
occur from using unsafe oils, than from steam
boats and railroads combined. Over 290,000
families continue to burn Pratt’s Astral Oil,
and no accidents directly er indirectly have oc
curred from burning, storing or handling it.—

A BEAUIIFUL WHITE, soft, smooth and
clear skin is produced by using G. W. Laird’s
• Bloom of Youth.” It removes tan, freckles,
sunburns and ail other discoleratious from the
skin, leaving the complexion brilliant aud
beautiful. Sold at all druggists. This prepa-
tion is entirely free from any material detri
mental to health.
JUST THEREMEDYNEEDED.—Thanks
to Mrs. Winslow’s Soothiug Syrup, we have
for years been relieved from sleepless nights
of painful watching with poor, suffering, teeth
ing children.
FOR DYSPEPSIA.—Indigestion depres
sion of spirits aud general debility in their va
rious forms ; also, as a preventive against Fe
ver and Ague, and other intermittent levers.

those, to whom the day is appropriated.
But we did not undertake to report the
orator. He was requested, we learn, by
the Committee to write out and furnish
a copy for publication.
The other episode referred to, was the
mggestion of a contribution box, inotto-
covered, fixed upon a post on one cor
ner of the Monument Square. The
family of Daniel S. House, recently slain
by a lunatic at the Asylum, were the
beneficiaries of the collections, which
amounted to $50, we are informed;
Milledgeville Lodge I. O. G. T. had pre
viously given $20 to the same end. The
interest which the community has taken
in tbis man is greatly to its credit, and
is largely attributable to his zeal in the
eause of Temperance.
The scattering of posies followed the
concluding prayer at the monument, and
gradually the multitude dispersed io their
homes as the eun sank in the west.

Editorial Notices are t>o common that
it :s a’most impossible for an editor to
erpress his honest opinion of the merits
of any article without being suspected
of interested motives. This fact, Low
ever, shall not deter us from saying
what we think of a new addition to the
Materia Medica to which our attention
has been recently directed. We refer to
Dr. J. Walker's California Vinegar l it-
ters, a remedy which is making its way
into more families just now than all the
other advertised medicines put together.
There seems to be no question about the
potency of its tonic and alterative prop
erties, while it possesses the great nega
tive recommendation of containing neith
er alcohol nor mineral poison. That it
is a specific for Indigestion, Billiousucss,
Constipation, aud many complaints of
nervous origin, we hare reason to know ;
and we are assured on good authority
that as a general invigorant, regulating
and purifying medicine, it lias no equal.
It is stated that its ingredients (obtain'
ed from the wilds of California ) are new
to the medical world ; and its extraor
dinary effects certaiuly warrant the con
clusion that it is a compound of agents
hitherto unknown. If popularity is any
criterion, there can be no doubt of the
efficiency of the Vinegar Bitters, for the
sale of the article is immense aud con
tinually increasing, april 6th rpn 4w.
