The children of the Methodist Sab
bath School had a Cpstival last evening
at the residence of Mrs. Dr. Mitchell,
which was quite a success. Every thing
was pleasant and agreeable, and the lit
tle folks retired at a seasonable hou r ,
highly elated.
The game of Base Ball that we gave
notice of in our last, resulted in favor of
the “Dolly Vardens”. The score be
ing, “Old Capitals 25, “Dolly Vardens”
27. We understand the “Dolly Var-
dens” have challenged the Mount
Zion club to play a game on next Fri
day ; we hope they may be victorious.
A learned judge in England lias re
cently decided that there, is no English
law prohibiting a woman from wearing
male attire, so long as she behaves her
self.
A recent report of the Grand Jury
for the Eastern Dis'rict of Texas, sets
forth that GO 000 square miles of Texan
soil have been pillaged by armed bands
of Mexicans coming from beyond the
Rio Grande ; that since the close of our
civil war iu 1SG5, 420 000 head of cat
tie, valued at over SG.000 000, have
been stolen and driven across the. frontier
into Mexico. The local pr&ss sustains
these allegations.
A destructive fire occurred in Somer
set, Pa, on the 10th inst., destroying
six squares in the heart of the town, em
bracing two thitds of its entire value.
The buildings destroyed included three
hotels, every business house, store and
shop, but one; both banking houses,
both printing offices, lawyers’ offices,
post office, United States Assessor’s of
fice, two churches, Masonic and Odd
Fellows Halls, telegraph and express of
fices, and over thirty private dwellings.
Fifty families are rendered homeless.
The total loss is estimated at one mil
lion of dollars. Insurance only seven-
tv-five thousand dollars.
SPECIAL NOTICES.
The Tenacity or Truth.—When a nation
as clear headed as the Americans once
become convinced, from long experience
and observation, that an article possess
es superior excellence as a medicine, not
all the preposterous, clamor of all the
worthless nostrum venders iu the uni
verse cau shake their belief in its effi
ciency. Truth is a very tenacious thing,
as these worthies are begiuning to dis
cover. Plantation Hitlers has too firm a
hold upou the popular esteem 'to be in
the slightest degree affected by the cold
water diatribes which the advertisers of
fermented slops, “without a particle of
alcohol,” are so fond oflauuching against
alcoholic preparations. The public knows
verv well that this peerless renovant
and tonic does contain spirits, but it al
so knows that they are of the purest and
most wholesome description, viz : fine
old St. Croix, the most active and bene
ficial diffuser of its lemedial and invigo
rating properties throughout the system
which could possibly he adopted.
JSpp Pimples on the Face, Eruptions,
Blotches, Scrofulous diseases, and all
sore3 arising from impure blood, are
cured by Dr, Pierce s Guluen Medical
Discovery. rplt.
The Cause of Temperance finds some of
its most insidious and dangerous foes in
the many so-called “tonics,’ aud “appe
tizers,” made of cheap whisky and refuse
liquors, finished up to suit depiaved ap
petites, under the name of medicines.
Dr Waller's California Vinegar Bitters
are none of these. They are not a bev
erage, hut a genuine medicine, purely
vegetable, prepared from California
herbs by a regular physician. Tor all
diseases of the stomach, liver, kidneys,
bladder, skin and blood, -hey are an in-
fa.lliole and unrivalled remedy.

IIoic Wc Used to be Physicked.—Who
does not remember the time when spring
purgation was considered indispensable
to summer health? No matter for wry
faces, the inevitable salts and senna,
rhubarb, or calomel and jalap, must be
administered. These “spring medicines,’
the youngsters were told, were to keep
them bale and hearty during the sum'
iner. We »11 know now that this was a
jfalscy; that now vigor, not depletion, is
i wl’.at is required ;t the commencement
of the summer sobtice. As a prepara
tion for the enervating of op
pressive summer weather, a course of
I Hostetter’s Stomach Bitters is highly
, expedient. This famous vegetable prep-
I aration has three prominent properties:
I It renovates, purifies, ami regulates all
i the functions of the body. It is com-
i P os *d exclusively of pure vegetable pro
j duettons, viz: the essential principle of
J Monong.ihe.la Rye. and the in ;s effica
cious tonic and alterative ioot«. barks,
and gums known to medical botanists.
Hence, it is an absolutely safe medicine,
and no tincture of the Pharmacopoeia cun
compare with it either in purity, or in
the variety of ils objects, and its com
prehensive results. Happily for man
kind, the theory that it was necessary to
prostrate a f atient in order to erne him,
is forever exploded, and the true philo
sophical doctrine, that vigor is the great
antagonist of disease, has taken its place.
Hostetter’s Bitters is an invigoraut, and
hence it is the proper medicine for the
feeble at this most trying season of the
year.
Be fnre that you obtain the genuine
article, as there are innumerable vile im
itations in the market. Look to the or
namental stamp, the engraved label, and
the name blown into the glass, llostet- j

The True Grounds of Confidence.— :
Whence comes that firm reliance, that i
absolute, undoubting faith in the eifica- j
cy of U .fifettcr's Stomach Hitlers as a !
remedy for indigestion, bilious disorders, j
intermittent and remiticnt fevers, which i
notoriously prevail in al! parts of the '
United States I This confidence has j
been growing fin twenty years, and it is
still extending. It is not the result of j
credulity ; it has not been engendered J
by' any human device, but is the spon
taneous and natural consequence of ex
perience. What people sec daily going
on under their own eyes they cannot
question. When families in unhealthy
districts that icsort to this wholesome
vegetable tonic, as a preventive, escape
periodical fevers, and their immediate
neighbors, who neglect this precaution,
are prostrated by the disease, how is it
possible that the phenomenon should be
without its lesson ? In like manner when
it is seen that obstinate ca-es of dyspep
sia, of liver complaint, of constipation, of
uervoua weakness, and of general debil
ity, yield to the operation of the famous
remedy, how cau even incredulity itself
withhold its endorsement ? Eye-wit
nesses of tho salutary' effects of the Bit
ters are to he found in every civilized
settlement cu this continent. The thou
sands upon thousands who owe their
restoration to health and strength, or
their preservation from sicki.ess, to its
extraordinary medicinal propeities, are
enthusiastic in its praise. The multi
tudes who recommend it in a neighbor
ly way to their liicnds and acquaint
ances, as well as tln.se who make public
their estimate of its vistues, are always
ready' to state their reasons for the faith
that is in them. They have all felt or
witnessed its benifieent operations.

VENUS herself would not have been beauti
ful it her complexion had been bad. If beauty
is skin deep, it is necessary to secure and re
tain that part of it; and ladies, inst ad of re
sorting to paints add powders, should remem
ber that an impure, blotchy, or sallow skiu is
the proof of feeble digestion, or torpid liver, or
vitiated blood, for all which L‘R. Walkkr's
California Vinegar Bitters is a safe, sure
and effeclual remedy.
BURNETT’S COCOAINE —No oils, neith
er pomades or alcoholic washes—foreign or do
mestic—can compare with Cocoaint as a HAIR
DRESSING. It anchors the hair firmly in the
scalp—gives it new life and lustre—and ren
ders it the “crowning glory” of both sexes,
old and young.
PRATT’S ASTRAL OIL.—More accidents
occur from using unsafe oils, than from steam
boats and railroads combined. Over 200,000
families continue to burn Piatt’s Astral Oil,
and no accidents directly er indirectly have oc
curred from burning, storing or handling it.—

tion is entirely free from any material detri
mental to health.
