Clover as a Fertilizer.
Mr. Frank Graves, of Marcellus
Falls, New York, writing to the Ger
mantown Telegraph on this subject,
says:
“Not only should we bring to our
assistance every available stimulant
to vegetable growth, but also at the
same lime that kind should come
hn>t which is the cheapest. Agreal
deal has been written about com
posting, collecting forest leaves, dis-'
solving bones, and saving rubbish
generally, all good in u measure,
and adding their might to the en
riching of the land, but not. whoby
satisfying the great craving of the
soil lor food. It is the deduction of
our leading farmers made from years
of experience, that clover is the
cheapest manure. A principal item
is the cost ol applying fertilizers. 1
sr t a man at work hauling barn
yard manure. He must have a team,
v agon and fork, fcle does a good
day’s work if he covers an acre. I
send a man to the field with a bagoi
clover seed on his shoulders, and
when night comes he has seeded
down ten acres or more. He has
a ided more fertility to the soil than
is contained in one hundred loads of
common barn-yard manure. A not
very distant farmet says: ‘I cannot
afford to put my straw back on my
l aid,’ so at five dollars a ton, his
wheat straw goes to the paper mill
Mid is immediately converted into
paper, and he buys clover seed with
1 lie money. Oi course fie cun afford
to put it back, though the resulting
profit would’nl be near so great as
is commonly estimated. Ii seems
to me better to grow clover seed and
keep the straw too.
“Clover protects the surface,
lienee it may be truly called a mulch.
A thick mat of clover prevents the
escape from the earth of fertilizing
properties that would otherwise be
wasted. Leave a board on the
ground for a few months, and no
matter how barren the soil, a profit
able amount of fertilizing material
will accumulate under the hoard.
Just in this way dues the clover
plant fetch uj? barren, worn-out land
lo a producing stale. Possiuly as
much humus is kept back to the
earth in this way as is drawn from
the air Sy the leaves of tfie plant.
Again, clover mellows the soil. Land
hav tig a natural tendency to become
pasty, heavy and tough, may be
converted, and with libers - ! seeding
into a mellow, friable seed bed, and
when we have got a mellow soil we
have reduced the expense ol culti
vation.
“Again, a heavy coat of clover
keeps down many kinds of weeds
that would otherwise spring up abun
dantly. It heads them off, just as a
tobacco plant shading the ground
stops, effectually, any growth be
neath its leaves. Finally, as fodder,
it is indispensable. Sheep preler
clover hay to the best of timothy and
other fine grasses. .Dairymen rank
clover high, and seed their land ac
cordingly. In fact, many faimers
here, sow nothing else. But then
there are seres and acres of land
that will not, unassisted, grow a clo
ver plant two inches high. For such,
gypsum is the resort, the natural
food. We have only to come down
with this dust and then leave the
rest lo nature. The common course
here is to seed down liberally, then
top-dress with gypsum in the ripring
and mow once. The next year,
more top-dressing, and either slock
lightly or mow again and plow under
the after-growth.”
requires no apparatus 7
r cash outlay.
2. That the liquid manure of cat
tle is worth more than the solid, and
is usually lost, but under this prac
tice, it is ali retained.
3. The dry earth retains within it
all 'he value, of which usually one-
third o* one-half is lost by fermen
tation, leaching, or evaporation.
4. It gives much larger bulk of
manure, each load of which is of
double the value of ordinary farm
yard manure.
5. That one ton of saturated earth
is of more value than the same
weight of even f resh-saved dung.
G. That the aggregate amount of
plani-footl thus saved from the stalls
isltmy (fouLle, and in much better
condition fur use.
His next experiment was the
cheap manipulation of bones. To
make his own bone material, he got
jfqtn a foundry, at the cost of $1 GO,
a thirty-two pound cast-iron sledge,
by which, with the aid of a spring-
pole and an upright log set in the
ground, he reduced bones to small
pieces ; then sifting out the finest,
lie crushed the coarser portions over
again; these fine pieces he compost
ed in layers with fresh horse-duni?
After three weeks he forked over the
pile and covered it with soil, and
this was afterwards forked over un>
til the bones were rotten and thor
oughly mixed with the horse-dung
and soil.
To save larm-yard manure from
waste, and above all, from fire-fang,
Mr. Giddings uses both earth and
water. He says “a covering of half
an inch of soil will absorb every par
tide of escaping ammonia, but a
thicker coating is desirable.” A wa
tering box on a one-horse carl is al
so used occasionally to stop a too
active fermentation of the pile.
There are other absorbents, rich
in themselves, of plant-food, whidi
not only save, but add bulk and
richness to the pile—muck, saw
dust, coal, ashes, &e. Go into your
hen-house on a warm morning, and
yo« will be oppressed with the efflu
via arising from their droppings;
spread over them a hod of coal-ash
es, or a basket of saw-dust, and the
air is sweetened as if by magic; and
it will keep the hens in good health,
besides increasing the manure,
followed up every few days.
The Rev. Mr. H had a large
family of unruly boys, and one ol
them did something very wrong, but
as none of them would confess it, he
declared he would whip them all,
and then he would be sure to punish
the real culprit. Lisping Jimmy,
the youngest, retired lo a corner and
grumbled. “What is that you say?”
asked his father. “I thaid,” whim-
peied Jimmy, “that’ll jutht the w'ay
old Herod did. He killed all the
children, tho’ that he would be ihure
to kill Jethuth.”

Increase and Strengthen the Manure,
A prize essay of die Illinois Agri
cultural Society for 1870, by R. Gid
dings, details the cheapest and most
practical plan of increasing the farm
manure pile and sa\ing its elements
from waste, and which should be
adopted by every farmer. His plan
is simply to save every particle of
the animal excrements, liquid an<
solid, with all its fertilizing elements
intact, free from waste by washing,
evaporation or fire-lang. To do this,
he fills a stall, or large bin, in his
stable, during dry weather, with
pulverized clay, road scrapings, or
common soil.
With this he covers the floor of
each stall three inches deep, and
then place the litter for the animal’s
bedding on it; b*y this means all the
urine will be absorbed, and its wealth
of nitrogen saved ; and such is the
absorbing power of dried earth that
one three-inch flooring will not be so
thoroughly saturated in a long time
as to require replacing. He says
his experiment required but one large
bin of pulverized earth to absorb the
urine of ten or twelve cattle during
the stable season ; and that two men
Jilled the bin in one day. Dried
clay was also applied to the pig-pen
and hen-roost, with the same ammo
nia-saving results ; and if applied to
the privy, or earth-closet, which is
-low being adopted, a great inanuri-
:i! as well as sanitary result would
follow. The inducements for the
use of dry earth are:

Hen Manure, Ashes, Plaster and
Salt.—John Jones, in the “Rural
New Yorker,” says that a valuable
fertilizer, and one in reach ol’every
farmer* especially adapted to garden
culture as well as tor top-dressing
and field culture, is hen-manure,
ashes, plaster and salt mixed in « qual
quantities, excepting the sah, of
which orie-lourlh will be sufficient.
Mix intimately, and apply either in
hill at the surface, or broadcast. Ii
gives good results upon all soils and
crops. I keep, usually, about 25
hens ; these ruosl at a certain place
the year round. Beneath the roosts
is a light plank floor. The annual
produce of droppings is six barrels
of the pure thing. This mixed with
the same of ashes and plaster, gives
eighteen barrels, the sail brings it
up to twenty barrels of choice fertil
izing compost, equal lo much of the
superphosphate of commercial ma
nure firms, and worth far more than
the manure of two cows.
Emergencies.
If a person falls down in a fit, and
begins to snore loudly, with a very
red face, it is apoplexy ; let him be
seated so as to favor the blood going
downwards, away from the head ;
apply cold cloths to the head, or
cushions of equal quantities of snow
or pounded ice and common salt. It
the person is perfectly still, face
pale, and there is no perceptible
breathing, it is a fit of fainting. Do
not touch him, except to loosen the
clothing; then keep off’ five or ten
feet distant, so as to allow the air to
come in ; make no noise, and there
will very soon be a calm, quiet re
turn to consciousness and life ; for it
is only a momentary cessation of the
circulation of the blood to the head.
But suppose there is a very violent
motion of hands and feel, and all
sorts of bodily contortions, it is epi
lepsy ; let the man contort until he
is tired ; you can’t hold him still;
all your efforts only lend to aggra
vate the trouble aud lo exhaust the
strength ; all that ought to be done
is to keep the unfortunate from hurl
ing himself. There is no felt suffer
ing, for as soon as he comes to, he
will tell you that he remembers noth
ing whatever of what has passed,
appears to be the only calm and self-
possessed person in the whole crowd,
and is apparently as perfectly well
as before the occurrence. Dizziness
often conies instantaneously, and we
begin to reel before we know it.—
Shut the eyes, whetheryou are walk
ing along the street, looking over a
precipice, assending a ladder, or
climbing to a ship’s mast-head; the
fear of dizziness disappears instant
ly if you look up.-—Hall's Journal of
