Earthquake at Milledgeville.
About 3 o’clock, P. M., yesterday,
our good people (lots of good people
here) were startled at a sudden and
loud report, resembling heavy artil
lery at a distance, ot the muffled re
port of a heavy blast. For a few
seconds thereafter the shock jarred
brick buildings, rattling windows
and frightening some persons. What
unnatural natural phenomenon it
was, unless an earthquake, we can
not conceive. The warning, of sul
phurous fires beneath, may have a
moral effect, possibly.

At a meeting of the Democratic

held in the CouitHouse,
On motion of Mr. S. N. Boughton,
Col. Wm. McKinley \>as called to
the Chair, and on Mr. L, Carring-

was requested to act as Secretary.
On taking the chair Col McKinley
in a short speech expressed the ob
ject of the meeting to be for the pur
pose of sending delegates to the
8tate Democratic Convention to as
semble in the city of Atlanta on the
26th inst.
There being three sets of resolu
tions introduced, Cap*- W. VV Wil»
liamson offered the following resolu
tion as a substitute for all the others,
which was finally adopted.
Resolved, That the Chairman of
this meeting appoint five delegates
lo the State Democratic Convention
at Atlanta who shall go there un
trammelled and unrestricted to act
for the best interest of our common
country*
The chair then appointed the fol

Resolutions offered by C. P.
Crawford.
The Democracy of Baldwin coun
ty do resolve—
1. The prime object of our politi
cal desire is tire delivsrance of the
South, from the wrongs, that burden
her present and menace her future.
The only remedy for these ills con
sists in a speedy return to and a
faithful compliance with the obliga
tions and limitations of the Constitu
tion, by the Federal authorities.
2. As a means to secure this vital
result, we regard the cordial unity
of the Southern Democracy as a
piime essential; we pledge our earn
est acquiescence in the decision of
of the Balt imore Convention, and de
nounce as reckless and unpatrioiic
any attempt to divide our forces.
3. We proclaim our earnest con
viction that a union of the Demo
cratic and Liberal Parties on the
Cincinnati basis will involve no sac
rifice of principle. And we hail the
alliance of all true friends of consti
tutional liberty of every name (good
enough Demoeratsffor us) as a tri
umph of Patriotism over Partyism,
boding well for the future of our
people.
4. It is our firm conviction, with
the lights before us, that the Liberal
Reform movement furnishes the sur
est, if not the only praciicable mode
of defeating Gram, restoring the
Constitution and arresting Imperial
ism in America.
5. The' Chairman shall appoint
Delegates to the Atlanta Con-
wrought by ji io our community
and upon the vigorous and aggress
ive condition of tVe Lodge, whose
membership exceed two hundred.

The advertisement of the “Forest

our readers.
The large and rapid increase

The Baldwin County Democratic
Meeting, as reported by its officers,
appears in another column. In ad
dition to the Resolution finally adopt
ed, there were three sets of resolu
tions, offered respectively by Mr. J.
H. Furman, Capt. T. W. White,
and the Editor of the Recorder. The
first commended harmony in the
party, acquiescing in the action of
the Baltimore Convention, and coun
ty action looking to a restitution of
the State Government to Milledge
ville. Capt. White’s resolution in
in its distinctive feature, recommend
ed a straight-ont Democratic nomin
ation at Baltimore. The third set is
published in full, below and speak
for themselves. We insert them, a«
our own private opinions, and that
they may not be misapprehended by
others. We believe ihey reflect the
opinions of a very large majority of
the party, in the county. Others
probably think otherwise. The
meeting did not come to a vote upon
either set.
The movers of the several resolu
tions advocated their own bantlings;
several others participated in dis
cussing a number of parliamen
tary questions, that were raised;
some confusion resulted, impatience
ensued; some members retired; a
substitute was offered, to obviate the
points of dispute, and was passed,
as reported.
Tha Anniversary Festival
Of Milledgeville Lodge, No. llo, I.
O. G. T., was a splendid success-
mha paas-wnrvl nf dip Order was ibe
only condition to admission. More
than three hundred Templars gath
ered in the “sacred place” by half
past eight o’clock Friday evening.
After initiating two candidates, the
Lodge adjourned to the “freedom of
the House.” An extravagant colla
tion of lemonade, ice-cream, fruit
cakes, sponge, pound, etc., etc., bur
dened the tables, in Representative
Hall, to which full justice was.done,
according lo the capacity of those
present. When their physical ener
gies were exhausted “on that line,”
the Magister Ceremoniae assumed the
gavel and announced, in order, the
sentiments, which were happily re
sponded to, as by the following pro
grammd of
TOASTS:
1. The Stale of Georgia—
“Freed at length from Tyrant’s chain, .
May her glories bloom again.”
Response by Judge J. B. Gonder.
2. The Old Capitol—

Now the Templars’ loved retraat.”
Response by B. W. BarroW.
3. The Great Reform—

But the Christian’s sturdy theme.
Response by Rev. A. J. Jarrell.
4. I. O. G. .T.—
Come friend and see.
Responso by S. E. Whitaker.
5. The Grand Lodge of Georgia—

Response by J. W. Herty, W C. T.
6. The Subordinate Lodges—

Response by 0. V. Crawford.
7. Milledgeville Lodge No. 115—

Response by M. Grieve, Jr.
8. The Sabbath School—

the Church.
Response by W. E. Frankland.
9. Our Guests and Brethren
Response by Dr. J. M. Whitaker.
10. The Ladies—

ficiaries of our Order.
Response by W. W. Williamson.
A Pitiful Condilioo.i—It is a sad thing
to pass through life only half alive. Yet
there are thousands whose habitual con
dition is one of langnor and debility.
They complain of no specific disease;
they suffer no positive pain; but they
have no relish for anything which af
fords mental or sensuous pleasure. In
nine cases out teu this state of lassitude
and torpor arises from a morbid stom
ach. Indigestion destroys .the energy
of both mind aud body. When the waste
of nature is not supplied by a due and
regular assimilation of the food, every or
gan is starved, every function inter
rupted.
Now, what does common sense «ug-
gest under tbese circumstances of de
pression ? The system needs rousing and
strengthening; not merely for an hour
or two, to sink afterward into a more
pitiable condition than ever (as it assur
edly would do if an ordinary alcobflio
stimulant were resorted to, but radios ly
and permanently.
How is this desirable object fo be ac
complished ? The answer to this ques
tion. founded on tbe unvarying experi
ence of a quarter of a century, is easily
given. Infuse new vigor into the diges
tive organs by a course of Hostetter’ft
Stomach Bitters. Do not waste time by
administering temporary remedies, but
wake the system up by recuperating the
fouutain-head of physical strength and
energy, the great organ upon which all
the other organs depend for their nur
ture and support.
By the time that a dozen doses of tbe
great vegetable tonic and invigorant have
been taken, the feeble frame of tbe dys
peptic will begin to feel its benign influ
ence. Appetite will be created, and
with appetite the capacity to digest what
it craves. Persevere until the cure is
complete—until healthful blood, fit to
be tbe material of flesh aud muscle, bone
and nerve and brain, flows through the
channels of circulation, instead of tbe
watery pabulum with which they have
heretofore been imperfectly nourished.
