Cain a Benefactor.—Accord-j they fall in diminishing numbers,
in^ to a correspondent of the Tri- i One lingers, perhaps, a lonely mar-
bune, the giant chemist, Trot. Lie- j vel, till the century is over. We
be^, entertains novel views as to the ! look again, and the work ot death is
meaning of the Scriptural story of j finished.
Cain and Abel. These ideas were j ’
brought out during the discussion of Habits of Sheep.—Sheep per-
a play in which Cain and Abel were severingly follow their leader wher
introduced as characters.
The cor
respondent gives them as follows;
He was of the opinion, shared of
couise by many, that so sacred a
subject ought not to be acted on the
stage, and he referred, in justifica
tion of his views, to the tableau of
Cain and Abel, wherfc the latter is
represented slain before the altar.
In the passing play—and, of course,
all Scriptural teachings—Cain is
held up to the world’s ignominy.
He, the great tiller of the ground,
the Agriculturalist, is condemned,
while Abel, the nomad, the Indian,
the lender of flocks, became the
world’s ideal.
‘‘In the fourth chapter of Gene
sis,” said the Baron, “we find the
most beautiful development of the
human race in this fable—Cain, the
Agriculturalist; Abel, the Indian.—
The one must destroy the other, and
Abel is slain, for agriculture is de
velopment. The children of Cain
are the representatives of industry.
They build cities and spread their
skill over the world. The children
of Cain are the developers of civili
zation.” I said to Doelinger, “Do
you think it immaterial if Abel had
slain Cain?” “No. If Abel had
slain Cain, human civilization would
have been impossible. Therefore,”
he said in conclusion, “it is wrong
to teach the young to speak of Cain
with such contempt, since, taking
the Bible history as it stands, we
owe all our progress to him alone,
and nothing to the dead Abel!”
Sound Teeth.—Mushes, gruels,
puddings and soups, may be made
hygienically. But they should also
be eaten hygienically. They must
be chewed, not bolted. The nurs
ing infant masticates its mother’s
milk, for which purpose it takes it
slowly, drop by drop. Mastication
is for the purpose of insalivation.
Unless food is properly insalivated,
it cannot be well digested. The
teeth are the finest, densest struc
ture of the body, and this means
that they are intended for hard work.
Eat solid lood at every meal; and
when you take semi-liquid, or very
soft food of any kind, eat very slow-,
ly and take a bit of hard bread,
cracker, a green apple, or something
similar, with it. Then will your
stomach please and be pleased, and
your tccih, like your eyes and nose,
and fingers and toes, will remain to
bless and comfort you to the last.
If all persons, alter being weaned,
would only chew their food enough,
we should hear very little of aching
and rotting teeth, and dentists would
be nowhere.—Science of Health.
ever he goes. A butcher’s boy was
driving about twenty fat wethers
through the town ol Liverpool; but
they ran down a street along which
he did r.ot want them to go. He
observed a scavenger at work with
his broom a little before them, and
requested him to stop the sheep.
The man accordingly did what he
could to turn them back, running
from side to side, always opposing
himselt to their passage, and bran
dishing his broom with great dex
terity ; but the sheep, much agitat
ed, pressed forward, and at last one
of them came right up to the man,
who, fearing that it was about to
jump over his head whilst he was
stooping, gra-ped the short broom
stick in both hands and held it hori
zontally over his head. He stood in
this position when he made a spring
and jumped fairly over him without
touching the broom. The first had
no sooner cleared the impediment,
than another followed, and another,
in quick succession, so that the man,
perfectly confounded, seemed to
lose all recollection, and stood in
the same position till the whole had
jumped over him, not one of them
attempting to pass on either side,
though the street was quite clear.
The Maysville (Ivy.) Bulletin says :
“A shooting match between Mr.
Frank Preston,aged ninety-six years,
and two young gentlemen of Bour
bon county, took place on the first ot
June, in which Mr. Preston beat
them both badly. A letter from the
old gentleman says, ‘the distance
was thirty yards, off-hand, with a
rifle I made forty years ago. I beat
them easily. 1 then gave them a
rest anil beat them again. As I
could not stand without my crutch
es, they gave me a chair.’ He chal
lenges two gentlemen of this city to
shoot witli him, and says he will beat
them both.”

Faith a Remedial Agbnt.—A
merry heart conduces to balanced
circulation—one of the essential con
ditions of health. A firm lailh gives
steadiness and straight-forwardness
to character, and determination to
the will, both of which are indispen
sable to the “normal play of all the
functions.” The doubting mind must
of necessity waste more or less of its
vital energies in unavailing efforts lo
solve the complicated problems and
unfathomable mysteries of a future
slate; or if it settles down in the
quiescence of unbelief, it lacks the
inspiration and innervation of hope
fulness. The man with abiding

A TEMPERANCE SERMON.
A correspondent of the Philadel
phia Press says of Sitka, Alaska :—
“While we were at Sitka two young
soldiers were tried for stealing liquor
from a government warehouse. One
was a bright, handsome boy, and 1
pitied him ‘lor his mother,’ when I
thought the prison gates would soon
close behind him for years, and shut
in his good name forever. They
had been led into crime by a villain
ous whisky-monger. I tell the sad
story to show that no portion of the
civilized world is remote enough to
escape from this almost universal
curse. Pauperism, riot, theft, rob
bery, arson, burglary, insanity, sui
cide and murder, follow in its track
of desolation. To the poor-house,
the jail, the lunatic asylum and the
gallows, wends the endless procession
of its victims. Women weep and
children starve, and men ignobly
perish, but the insatiable maw of
difficulties, endure privations, face
dangers and triumph over disasters,
that would appal and unman a des
pondent or a doubting heart.—lb.
How to Keep a Situation.—
Lay it down as a foundation rule
that you will be “faithful in that
which is least.” Pick up the loose
nails, bits of twine, clean wrapping
paper, and put them in their places.
Be ready to throw in an odd half
hour or hour’s time, when it will be
an accommodation, and don’t seem
to make a merit of it. Do it hearti
ly. Though not a word be said, be
sure your employer will make a note
of it. Make yourself indispensable
to him, and he will lose many of the
opposite kind before he will part
with you. Those young men who
watch the time, to see the very sec
ond their working hour is up; who
leave, no matter what state the work
may be in, at precisely the instant;
who calculate the extra amount they
can slight their work and yet not
get reproved; who are lavish of
their emplojer’s goods, will always
be first to receive notice when times
are dull, and their services are no
longer required. Remember you are
not a slave. Then serve your em
ployer as a friend; in due time he
will be a friend to you.
The Journey of Life.—Ten
thousand human beings set forth to
gether on their journey. After ten
years, one-third, at least, have dis
appeared. At the middlq point of
the common measure of life, but half
are still upon the road. Faster and
faster, as the ranks grow thinner,
they that remain till now become
weary, and lie down and rise no
more. At three score and leu a band
of some four hundred yet struggle
I trust my readers will pardon
this little digression, for, like most of
them, I owe whisky a grudge for
friends and kindred slain. And
I should be untrue to life-long con
victions, and a traitor to buried
friendships and mournful memories,
it I did not sometimes fully strive to
avenge them.”
Is not this the whole story ? Could
a thousand temperance sermons add
anything to it ? Who are the authori
ties that permit this traffic ? Where
are the people who license it?

Home Sunshine.—Many a child
goes astray, not because there is
want of prayer or virtue at home, but
simply because home lacks sunshine.
A child needs smiles as much as
flowers need sunbeams. Children
look little beyond the present mo
ment. If a thing pleases, they are
apt to seek it; it it displeases, they
are prone to avoid it. If home is
the place where faces are sour and
words harsh, ami fault-finding is ev
er in the ascendant, they will spend
as many hours as possible elsewhere.
Let every father and mother then
try to be happy. Let them talk to
their children, especially the little
ones, in such a way as lo make them
happy.
The man who can summon up his
faculties at will, and direct their
forces steadily and patiently lo any
subject he may choose, is a well-
educated man. No other deserves
