Great strides were made in 1985
The year 1985 has been fruitful
for this cdumnist. Fruitful in terms
of rendering further community
service, 2specially in the area of
Black History planning. We've
written about and made observa
tions inthis column on countless
people, events and institutions.
Now I'dlike to look back on myown
persond and professional life. One
item onthe front burner, however,
is “Operation Memorial Catch-Up,
’86.” This has to do with some good
projectbns on outdoor memorial
plaques to memorialize various
churches, organizations and indi
viduals While there has been a
delay irannouncing part two—the
suggesied locations — because ad
ditiona research must be yet com
pleted.

uncovered the fact that Dr. Lucy C.

of the chapter in 1917. And the

In March, I was the recipient of a
Jefferson Award given by Channel
-12, local CBS television. It was for
“50 years of service to Augusta and
the Nation for communication, civil
rights and Black History leader
ship.” Many people helped includ
ing the Shiloh Community Center,
elder statesman S.M. Jenkins, Joe
Goudy, etc. But it was Mrs Lillian
Johnson, secretary of the Black
History Committee, who put all of
this material together into a pack
age. Andit was Mrs. Y. Dent Emory
who typed it.
Later that month, the Internal

Millender for some 14 years. While
this was a business situation, it fell

with a possibility of destroying him.
What happened within the next
month made one proud indeed to be
a Black Augustan. With leadership
byJames Walker, head of theOmega
fraternity and Paine College Presi
dent Bill Harris, the community
came alive. I handled some of the
publicrelations. The Paine Alumni
from virtually all Greek unites,
many civic groups and churches,
went into emergency action. Over
SB,OOO was raised.
Right after the shutdown, State
Rep. Charles Walker invited me
and several others who had been
with the N-R to come aboard his
Augusta Focus. Shortly afterwards,
we were to help promote and ob
serve the fifth anniversary of this
spirited and attractive paper.

Parenting is a joy—and occasionally a challenge.
So more and more, communities play a key
supporting role in the nurture of young minds,
bodies and spirits.
And United Way is helping too. We fund local
programs and services that give kids the boost they need
to succeed. By promoting partnerships among government,
schools, business and healthcare together we can feed a
family, train an athlete, teach a young child to read.
United Way... Raising hopes, reaching dreams.
