Students study origins, impact of hip-hop music

Omowale Akintunde teaches a
different sort of history class at
the University of Southern
Indiana.
Akintunde and his students
are exploring the origins and
impact of hip-hop, from
Grandmaster Flash o Kanye
West and everything in
between.

It explores how hip-hop grew
from an African-American
phenomenon to become a
lobal force with no race

Akintunde said his class
accepts the reality that for
many young Americans, artists
such as the late Tupac Shakur
are as relevant to history as
Beethoven or the Beatles.

Dear Miss Monique,
Would you tell a secret if
you knew it would harm
someone close to you? My
situation went like this:
My best friend told me
that she and her boyfriend
were going to Columbia.
Let’s just say their trip was
to commit a felony. She is
only 21 and her boyfriend
is 32. [ felt as though 1 had
to tell the secret. She asked
me to keep her out of trou

consider intellectualism, bring
in new voices,” said Akintunde,

for backing his development of
the course.
He told his students during a

ent and serve a different
function. Just as we are
all different and serve a
different function. Your
membership to a church
should not depend on if
your family or friends are
members. You should be
seeking a church home
that will fill your needs
and feed your purpose.

only landed her in jail, but
it could have gotten her

serious study of hip-hop as
“dirtying intellectualism.”
He said his response to such
critics would be, “even though
this is not your perspective,

for everyone. Praise God
that he recognizes that
his people are unique
and that we all need
something different.
Even the message has to
be different. It takes all
of that to feed his peo
ple. These are things that
people should be aware
of when looking for a
church home.

month, and she will get
custody of their teenage
daughter, a judge ruled
chiwsday.

that the divorce will
become final April 24.
