What the Bible aays about forgiveness
By MARY SULLIVAN
Special to the Augusta Focus
One of the most i
experiences that a!lif‘alll:‘g!muns%
face ar some time in our lives is
to forgive someone who has

by one o parents who
expressed that d(\z were not
ready to forgive Cho for mur
dering their child in the recent
Virginia Tech tragedy. Forgjve
ness is one of the most impor
want characteristics of an indi
vidual. If one does not forgive
another, that one is usually mis
erable. Unforgiveness is like
cancer. It eats away at us and
causes us to bear unnecessary
pain and sorrow. It cripples our
Spiritual life and destroys our
testimony and our witness.
It destroys relationships in
families, churches, and busi
nesses as well as the peace and
joy that we should experience
in life. No one trusts an unfor
iving person. However, in the
m;'of Christ, the church, the
household of faith, there is
absolutely no place for unfor

giveness. Everyone who daims
Christ as savior and Lord
should be as Ephesians 4:32
states: “And be ye kind one to
another, tcndcr—ficmcd, forgiv
ing one another, even as god
for Christs sake hath forgjven
you.
Jesus taught us in the famous
Sermon on the Mount that we
should love our enemies and
pray for those who persecute
us. (Matthew 5:44). Jesus was
actually ralking about forgive
ness. He is our supreme exam
ple and demonstrated this great
wruth of forgiving another

when he hung on the cross
between two thieves. In the
midst of excruciating pain,
sneers and insults from the
aowd, He managed to utter
the most powerful and convict
ing words that have ever been
spoken by someone in his
predicament: “Father forgive
them, for they know not what
they do.” (Luke 23:34). We
cannot be saved unless God
forgives us of our sins.
In order o experience com
plete forgiveness, we must put
off all bitterness, envy, anger
and hatred of others. We can
never truly experience the peace
of God until we put off these
things and forgjve as we are for
given. God knows (He's omnis
cience) our hearts and he
knows that our asking for for
giveness is in vain untl we are
ready to be broken and ready o
restore any and all broken rela
tionships with others. We
should make restitution to
those whom we have hurt and
those who have hurt us. We
should strive to do everything

Jesus taught us that when we
pray for forgiveness, we must
be willing to forgive those who
trespass against us. (Mathew
6:12). He also taught us that
there is no limit on forgiveness.
As many times as a person
comes to you and ask you to
forgive them, you must forgive
them. If you are in a state of bit
terness and unforgiveness,
please let go and let God min
ister to you. This will ensure a
right reladionship with God
and with one another. Let us
pray for those who are finding
it difficult to forgive Cho for
what he did. We are not saying
that what he did was right, w
are we must forgive in
ord:y::gmovc forward in a
healthy manner.
