Black Entertainment Television sitcom about black
slackers will be network’s first original scripted series
NEW YORK (AP) -
America’s Black Entertain
ment Television channel is
making the first scripted
series in its 28-year history,
a sitcom about a group of
black slackers.
“Somebodies™ is expect
ed to premiere in October,
Reginald Hudlin, BET’s
entertainment president,
said Wednesday.
As the first cable channel
geared to blacks, BET fea
tured a lot of music pro
gramming, syndicated fare
and reality shows, but it
was criticized for not
spending money to pro
duce original programs.
Hudlin’s announcement
of “Somebodies” was
timed to coincide with the
network’s presentation of
ent diseases —they both
said that got the diseases
even though they used
protection. My reason for
bringing that up is this

Wednesday night.
“"Somebodies” is based
on a 2006 film that was in
the Sundance Film Festi
val. It will be produced by
Pete Aronson and Warren
Hutcherson, executive
p'roduccrs of “The Bernie
Mac Show,” and it will be
set, and filmed, in Athens,
Georgia.
“For years people have
wanted BET to expand the
range of its original pro
gramming,” Hudlin said,
“and now we are doing it.”
The network is develop
ing several scripted shows,
but this was the first
deemed ready to go, he
said.
