Public Ridicules PGA
For Ousting Sanders
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI SPORTS WRITER
PENSACOLA, Fla. (UPI) —
There may be a change made
in the ancient rules of golf.
John Q. Public, who usually
doesn’t pay much attention to
such mundane things, became
an authority in a hurry the
other day when Doug Sanders
got bounced out of the Pensa
cola Open for failing to sign
his scorecard. The public might
not know the rules, but from
what they heard they didn’t like
them.
From the telephone calls and
telegrams that poured in from
across the nation, you’d have
thought that the Professional
Golfers Association (PGA) had
committed a heinous act.
Bar Sanders for failing to
sign a scorecard?
Ridiculous I
Perhaps, but that’s exactly
how Rule 38:2 reads. It’a the
golfer’s responsibility to sign
his card. If he doesn’t—he’s
out.
The overwhelming sentiment
from Jack Tuthill, the man who
had to give Sanders the thumb,
to the most casual spectator
was that the penalty is much
too strict. Everybody seemed
to feel that socking Sanders a
couple of strokes would have
been stiff enough.
Sanders became a special
case because he Just happened
to be leading the tournament at
a record pace when he ran
afoul of the regulations.

Russell: Independent Soul
Right Up to His Goatee
By MURRAY OLDERMAN
Sports Editor
Entterprise Assn.
Johnson at Phoenix and Chuck
Courtney at Tucson—had been
bounced for the same infrac
tion but apparently they were
the only ones who seemed to
care.
Three years ago, Gary Play
er’s outrage over another rule
led to its being changed.
That time, Player lost the
Phoenix Open by one stroke to
Arnold Palmer. He blamed that
stroke on a putt he missed after
being forced to wait an un
usually long time for his play
ing partner, Don January, to
shoot. January refused for
more than five minutes to take
a follow-up putt on a ball hang
ing on the lip of a cup, on the
grounds that it might fall in by
itself.
The rule was changed so that
a golfer can wait only a few
seconds for a ball to fall, then
must putt again. It cost Billy
Casper two strokes in the Sa
hara Open for taking more than
30 seconds in a similar situa
tion.
The rule that apparently cost
Sanders the $10,000 first prize
in the Pensacola Open appears
to be more unfair than the one
that shook up Player.
There was obviously no at
tempt by Sanders to do any
thing illegal. He checked his
scorecard over several times.
It was correct. That he failed
to sign it was simply a costly
omission.
But Rule 38:2 leaves no mar
gin for forgetfulness. It is dead
ly clear: No signee, no
Luplow in right.
That’s going strictly on the
old theory that left handed
hitters do better against right
handed pitching and right
handed hitters do their best
against southpaw hurling.
