Wills May Sign
Stakes Remain High
For Koufax, Drysdale
(UPI) — Los
Angeles Dodgers star pitchers
Sandy Koukax and Don
Drysdale played a big stakes
holdout poker with General
Manager E. J. (Buzzie) Bavasi
today, but shortstop Maury
Wills was ready for a
showdown.
Wills missed the Dodgers’
departure to spring camp at
Vero Beach, Fla. because of a
theatrical engagement in Japan
but on his return he said he
intended calling Bavasi and
indicated he expected a fairly
quick agreement.
Koufax and Drysdale, howev
er, sat pat and waited for
Bavasi to make the next move
on the demands for the hurleis
for $1 million between them for
three years.
Wills at the time of his
departure for Japan had said
his asking price would be the
same as those of Koufax and
Drysdale. He assumed at the
time they would be after
$100,000 each.
“I had no idea they were
going to ask for as mveh as
they are after,” Wills said. “I
don’t think I’m worth that
much.”
Wills reportedly received
around $60,000 last season and
it was believed in informed
circles that an offer somewhere
in the vicinity of $90,000 would
bring him to terms.

Did Milwaukee Try
To Lure Indians?
(UPI) — Coun
ty Executive John Doyne
Tuesday denied trying to
“entice” the Cleveland Ameri
can League baseball team to
move to Milwaukee. However,
he did admit talking to Indians
President Gabe Paul in an
effort to arrange a meeting "to
talk baseball.”
Doyne, under cross-examina
tion in the seventh day of
Wisconsin’s antitrust trial
against baseball, said Paul told
him he would be wasting time
in coming to Cleveland with
any idea of getting the Indians.
He then testified he did not go
to meet with Paul.
Doyne was one of three
ball on Milwaukee.
The 102-page document, pre
pared by Washington , D.C.,
economist Robert Nathan, said
removal of the Braves would
cost the community “conserva
tively” $18 willion a year not
counting money spent by
Milwaukee on baseball and not
including the cost of the
stadium upkeep or the tax loss.

Surprised
But Not Speechless
By JEFF MEYERS

Ever wonder what would
happen if Casey Stengel bad
five months to prepare a
speech?
The lovable ol’ Perfessor,
whose impromptu Stengelese
discourses have been known to
ramble on almost indefinitely,
began writing his acceptance
speech today for his July 25
induction into the Hall of Fame
at Cooperstown, N.Y.
Stengel, whose remarkable
baseball career was cut short
on that same date—July 25—a
year ago when he broke his
hip, was elected into the shrine
Tuesday in a surprise move by
the Hall of Fame veterans
committee.
The 75-year-old Casey, who
under normal circumstances
would not be eligible for
selection until his 80th birthday
—five years after his retire
ment, according to Hall of
Fame rules—was lured to the
New York Mets’ training camp
at St. Petersburg, Fla., under a
pretext.
Casey throught the ceremony

for his close friend, Mets’
President George Weiss. But
the wise old perfessor had an
inkling of something out of the
ordinary and remarked to his
wife, Edna, “If this is
something for me...you’d better
tell me.”

Lemaster Gets Nod
In ’Fruit
WEST PALM BEACH, Fla.
(UPI)—Denny Lemaster, a 17
game winner two years ago, has
the top chance to be the Atlanta
Braves’ starting pitcher in their
Grapefruit League opener
Saturday against the Los
Angeles Dodgers.
Manager Bobby Bragan said
Tuesday that Lemaster will
start if he is in shape. If not,
then Ken Johnson will go.
Once at the field, Stengel
fidgeted while former baseball
Commissioner Ford Frick be
making what appeared to
a Presentation to Weiss. But
instead, Frick came right to
the point and nearly rocked
Casey off his heels.
“Charles Dillon Stengel,”
Frick concluded, “has been
unanimously elected to the
baseball Hall of Fame.”
In his inimitable way, Stengel
bowed to Frick and the throng
of senlor citizens who flock to
the ball park every day.
“Thank you very much,” he
said, beginning a typical
Stengelese speech that has kept
newspapermen in copy ever

“I want to give the pitchers
I think will be my four starters
a lot of work,” Bragan said,
“and of course Lemaster and
Johnson will be two of them.”
Lemaster slumped to a 7 - 13
record last season while both
ered by a sore arm.
“We’re counting on him,”
Bragan said, “and I believe
he’ll help us. He shut out the
Dodgers in his final start last
season, and he has looked real

since he broke into organized
ball with Kankakee, Ill., in
1910. “I think it is a wonderful
thing that they picked the other
man (Ted Williams, who was
elected earlier this year). He’ll

(at the induction ceremonies)
because I understand he doesn’t
speak much.
“It is a wonderful thing to
get into the Hall of Fame,”
Casey continued, “and you
realize that when you talk to
the other players who are in it
and who are alive at the
present time. I am very
grateful and I will save my
speech for the time I am in
Cooperstown.”
