Elaine Corley
Appointed
Rec. Director
Miss Elaine Corley, formerly
of Griffin, has been named Dir
ector of the Departments of
Parks and Recreation at Forest
Park.
She was recently appointed to
the position at a special called
meeting of the Forest Park
City Council.
Miss Corley, who had been
assistant director since 1963, is
a graduate of Griffin High Sc
hool and attended Georgia State
College.
She served as Community Cen
ter Director in Griffin for four
years and was recreation super
visor in Griffin before going to
Forest Park.
She is currently secretary for
the Georgia Youth Workshop,
sponsored by the Georgia Re
creation Society, and in 1966 was
secretary of the State Recrea
tion Association.

Attend Torch Meet
Six members of the Griffin
District Office of Liberty Na
tional Life Insurance Company
have qualified to attend the
company’s 1967 Torch Club at
Broadwater Beach Hotel in Bi
loxi, Miss., May 22-24.
The Torch Club is composed of

Dies Today
Mrs. Dora Mae Morris Wright,
78, of Orchard Hill died at the
Griffin-Spalding County Hospi
tal this morning
Mrs. Wright was born In Car
roll County, Ga., but had lived
in this community for 31 years.
She was a member of the Or
chard Hill Baptist Church.
Survivors Include her husband,
Shelley G. Wright; four daugh
ters, Mrs. Noah Clanton of Boaz,
Ala., Mrs. Ress Clanton of Or
chard Hill, Mrs. W. Parris Hy
der of Orchard Hill, Mrs. Fred
Gibson of Miami, Fla.; one son,
Fred Wright of Griffin; two sis
ters, Mrs. Velma McCuffin of
Five Points, Ala., Mrs. Andrew
Thompson of Carrollton; three
brothers, Olin Morris, Shep
Morris, both of Carrollton, Earl
Morris of Griffin; 16 grandchll
ren and several nieces and nep
hews also survive.
Funeral services for Mrs.
Wright will be conducted Tues
day afternoon at 3 o’clock from
the Orchard Hill Baptist Chur
ch. The Rev. George Phillips
and the Rev. Graydon Phillips
will officiate. Burial will be in
Oak Hill cemetery. Mrs. Wri
ght’s body will remain at Mc-
Donald Funeral Home. Friends
may visit the family at the
home of Mr. and Mrs. Ress Cl
anton.

to Arthur Friend, 47, on his way
to a conference of the Royal
Soclet for the Prevention of
Accidents.
Friend, an official of the
organization, slipped and fell on
a Scarborough street, breaking
his right leg.
“I felt a bit silly about it,”
said Friend. "After all, it was a
'stop accidents’ conference."

Ist At Camporee
The Flint Rlvef Council cam
poree was held at Camp Buck
Creek this weekend with 10 troop
of Boy Scouts from eight coun
ties participating. Tire Scouts
competed in Scout skills, crafts
and games.
The camporee opened Friday
with personal inspection of each
Scout and his equipment. On Sat
urday, the Scouts competed in
fire building, tent peg relay, fire
bucket relay, compass and ob
servation games. Three teams
of judges from the Griffin Kl
wanis Club judged campsites,
equipment, camp crafts and
camping skills of each troop.
Jim Powers, a member of the
Order of Arrow, performed an
Indian torch dance at the even
ing’s campfire. During the camp
fire, each patrol presented a skit
for the entertainment of the au
dience.
The camporee closed Sunday
morning after Hoke Copeland,
Council executive, held church
services and awards were pre
sented to each troop.
The presidential ribbon and
first place award was presented
to Newton Crouch, Scoutmaster
of Troop One, Griffin, for his
troop's earning first place. A
blue ribbon was presented to Ha
rold Johnson, Scoutmaster of
Troop Nine of Griffin, for his
troop’s earning second place.
Each troop participating in the
Council camporee was awarded
a ribbon according to tlie total
number on points earned during
the camporee.
Blackmon Graduates
At Job Corps Center
BATTLE CREEK, Mich. —
Larris Blackmon, son of Mrs.
Fannie Blackmon of 846 Scale
street, Griffin, was graduated
from Custer Job Corps Center,
Battle Creek, Mich.
Blackmon, who came to Cus
ter last August, was enrolled in
the Center’s clerical training
program.

Baton Show
Set Friday
The Griffin Recreation Center
will present a Baton Show to
mark the end of their baton
program this spring. The pro
gram will feature the 25 local
girls who have participated In
the Recreation Center’s Baton
Program since Its beginning in
March. The program will start
at 7 p.m. Friday, May 12 at the
pavilion near the pool In city
park. There will be no admis
sion charge.
The Sylvan Hills Drill Team
will open the program with a
special military number and
perform a pompom drill. Miss
Yana McAbee and Miss Donda
Dorflage will demonstrate an
acrobatic baton routine to show
how well the two may go toge
ther.
Miss Janice Cobb of Griffin
will perform the solo number
that won her a superior rating
at a recent GMEA Band Festi
val.
The Forest Park Senior High
School Majorettes also winners
of a Superior rating, will be
present to twirl. All 25 local
girls that have participated in
the Recreation Center bato n
classes will also perform.
The program will conclude the
spring baton program and the
summer program will begin
June 12. Classes will meet on
Monday and Thursday mornings
for five weeks during the sum
mer. There will be 10 classes
and registration fee is $5 for the
complete course or 75 cents each
class. Mrs. Susan Tarpley will
be the instructor.

Tina is currently working in a film, “The Man Who Knew

Firemen Report
Weekend Calls
The Griffin Fire Department
reported the following calls an
swered on Sunday night and
Monday morning:
At 8:33 p.m. firemen were
called to 103 Valley road, the re
sidence of Carl Clark, to a de
fective light switch. No damage
was reported.
A defective carburetor caused
an automobile fire at 9:18 p.m.
at the 400 block of North Hill
street, and damage was repor
ted to the carburetor, wiring,
hood and spare tire. Owner of
the automobile was Dorothy
Hanson.
This morning at 6:15 a.m. fire
men answered an alarm to 1130
Cherokee avenue, the residence
of Terry Wynne, to a defective
furnance motor. Damage was
reported to the motor only.
An automobile fire at 7:38 a.
m. on West Poplar street and
Hammond drive, was reported.
A defective carburetor caused
considerable damage to the
automobile owned by Mrs. Ja
mes O’Quinn.
