Woodward Makes Bid
To Regain His Position
By DAVID M. MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — William
Frederick (Woody) Woodward
is determined to make his
“second chance” pay off.
Woody lost his job as second
baseman for the Atlanta Braves
earlier this season because of
weak hitting. He was replaced
by Felix Millan who was going
like a house afire until he suf
fered a minor ankle injury
Saturday.
Manager Billy Hitchcock Sun
day gave Millan’s ankle a day
of rest and inserted Woodward
and his .043 batting average
back into the lineup for the
day.
Woodward responded like a
man who wants his job back.
He drove in the first and last
runs with a pair of sharp
singles in Atlanta’s 5-3 victory
over the league-leading Cincin
nati Reds and sparkled afield.
“I just wanted to play,”
Woodward said happily after
the game. “I had gotten off to
a slow start and didn’t know
when I might get back in there
if ever.
“I tried to be relaxed when
I got my chance. If you go out
there feeing you have to prod

duce, you start pressing.”
Woodward, who had been out
of the lineup since April 18,
was especially pleased that he
got his two hits off Jim Ma
loney.
“Maloney is one of the tough
est guys in the league to hit,”
Woody said. ‘‘When you get
your hits off him, you really
feel good.”
Hitchcock said Woodward
would be in the lineup tonight
when the Braves open a three
game series in Philadelphia.
‘‘When a player has the sort
of day Woody had Sunday, you
leave him in there,” Hitchcock
said.
Pat Jarvis and Phil Niekro
combined for the third straight
time in pitching the Braves to
victory Sunday. Niekro has
pitched 10 scoreless innings in
relief of Jarvis who now has a
3-0 record.
“That Niekro is really some
thing,” Jarvis said. “Anything
that guy wants from me is his.
He’s really been a lifesaver.”
Niekro came on in the
seventh with one on and one
out, walked the next two bat
ters, but got out of the inning
without letting the Reds score.

Beard Frustrates
Arnold Palmer
HOUSTON (UPI) —Frank
Beard is a frustrated basketball
player from Kentucky, but, as a
golfer, he frustrates Arnold
Palmer.
Beard, a half-brother of
former Kentucky All-America
basketball player Ralph Beard,
sank an 18-foot birdie putt on
the final hole of the $115,000
Houston Champions Internation
al Sunday to beat Arnold
Palmer by one stroke with a
course record 274.
It was the second time in a
month that Beard defeated the
great Palmer by one stroke
with a birdie on the final hole.
He did it with an eight-foot putt
April 16 to win the Tournament
of Champions at Las Vegas.
Beard, enjoying his best year
since he turned pro in 1962,
fired a final round of four-under
par 67 to go with rounds of 67,
70 and 70 to dethrone Palmer.
Final Far Round
Arnie, who set the record last
year with a 275, equalled it this
year with rounds of 68, 66, 70
and 71. His even par on the
final day was the first time in
eight rounds here that he did
not break par and it proved his
undoing.
He had entered the final
round with a two stroke lead
over Billy Casper and a three
stroke margin over the third
place Beard. Casper hit balls in
the water twice in six holes,

1-2-3 in the ninth for his fifth
save of the young season.
The Braves lost two out of
three to the Reds this weekend
to fall three games off the
pace, but you can’t blame their
hitters.
The Braves had 17 hits, in
cluding Hank Aarons fifth ho
mer and three other’s doubles
in a 14-7 loss Friday and nine
hits, including Gene Oliver’s
homer, in a 4-3 loss Saturday.
Sunday, they had nine more
hits, including two doubles, for
a total of 35 hits in the three
games.
But Hitchcock expressed dis
pleasure with centerfielder
Mack Jones who batted clean
up in two of the games and left
11 batters stranded while get
ting only a single in nine at
bats. Hitchcock said Jones, who
is batting only .206 with just
one home run and five RBIs,
will drop down in the lineup.
‘‘Mack’s going through a

Boros In Money
Julius Boros tied Casper’s

round to finish in a tie for fifth
with Harold Henning at 279
Tom Weiskopf was next at 280.
Beard met Palmer head on in
the final pressure-packed holes.
Beard first caught Palmer on
No. 14 when Palmer missed the
green, chipped up and missed a
14-foot putt. The Kentuckian
took lead on No. 15 when he
sank an 18-foot birdie putt.
He lost it on 16 when he
three-putted from 80 feet,
missing an eight-footer for a
par. Then they played 17 even
and Arnie got his par on 18 by
two-putting from 30 feet,
throwing all the pressure on
Beard. Beard broke the putt
two inches to the right and into
the cup.
The $23,000 first-prize money
was the biggest of his career,
but he said he would have
preferred basketball.
“I’d rather play Basketball
than golf, but I’m too slow,” he
said.
