Hijacker Wants
To Get To Hanoi
MIAMI (UPI)—A self-pro
claimed American Communist
from Michigan who hijaeked a
small plane in south Florida
skies Saturday is trying to
make his way to Hanoi,
according to the pilot forced to
ferry him to Cuba.
Donald Doran, 42, of Coral
Gables, Fla., said the hijacker,
former sociology teacher Tho
mas Boynton, 31, of Kalamazoo,
Mich., claimed to hate the
United States and President
Johnson and had discovered
through his studies that he
preferred Communism to life in
America.
Doran related the tale of his
unscheduled visit to Havana,
which he made at pistol point,
to newsmen shortly after
landing at Miami International
Airport Tuesday.
Boynton has asked for politi
cal asylum in Cuba, and the
request is being considered by
Havana authorities.
Doran, with a day’s growth of
beard, touched down his twin
engine airplane here after
spending more than two days in
Cuba. He reported being treated
“very well’ while there, spend
ing the first night in a security
compound outside Havana but
later having freedom to roam
the city. He was grounded by
bad weather Monday, delaying
bis return.

James Boynton, lost his $9,000-
a-year job as an instructor at
the Fort Custer Job Corps
Center three weeks ago when
the center closed. In December,
his Negro wife of a year, Lisa,
a go-go dancer, left him,
heading for California with
plans for a divorce.

Heads Heart
Sunday Appeal
The chairman of the 1968
Heart Sunday appeal in Spald
ing County is Mrs. Jo Mills,
Leonard F. Erwin, local Heart
Fund Campaign chairman, an
nounced today.
Heart Sunday will be observ
ed here as the high point of
the month-long Heart Fund
campaign. Volunteers will call
on their neighbors between
Feb. 18-25.
Mrs. Mills has been active in
the Spalding Heart Association
for several years. She served
as chairman of memorials in
1967.
Among the volunteers re
cruited for the residental sec
tions by Mrs. Mills are: Miss
Louise Ellis, first ward; Miss
Bernice Wise, second ward;
Mrs. Larry Neill, third ward;
and Mrs. Louis Jordan Jr.,
fourth ward.
Proceeds of the drive are
used to support research, edu
cation and community service
activities of the Spalding Heart
Association, the only voluntary
health agency here devoted to
combatting diseases of the
heart and circulatory system.
Night Courses In
Law, Stocks, RHAC
Offered At Vo-Tech
Two short courses and one
regular course will begin at Gr
iffin Tech the first week in Mar
ch.
The short courses will Funda
mentals of Investing and Stock
Market and Business Law. The
regular course will be Refrige
ration, Heating and Air Condi
tioning.
The course on investing and
stocks will be taught by Ronald
H. Deßarry, stock broker with
Thomson and McKinnon. He is
a registered representative of
the New York Stock Exchange,
has a bachelor of science in bus
iness administration from the
University of Florida.
The cost of the course will be
$5 plus a fee for books and ma
terials.
The investing and stock mar
ket course will be taught on
Tuesday nights for six weeks
from 7:30 to 9:30. It begins on
March 5.
The Business law course will
be taught by Griffin attorney
Stephen O. Squires.
It will be taught on Monday
and Wednesday nights begin
ning at 7 o’clock. The course be
gins on March 4 and will con
tinue through May 28.
The course is open to credit
managers, bank employes, con
tractors, real estate brokers, in
surancemen, sales personnel and
all Interested persons.
The refrigeration, heating and
air conditioning course will be
held Thursday nights, four hours
each night.

RYDE, Isle of Wight (UPI)—
Mrs. Freda Mullan was in
hospital again today so doctors
could renew their search for the
robin she swallowed two weeks
ago.
She gulped down the plastic
bird with a piece of cake at a
Christmas party. Now it is
stuck somewhere in her throat.
"They’ve taken X-rays but the
plastic doesn’t show,” she said.
“But I’m still chirpy.”
James Haygood will be the in
structor. He has had many ye
ars technical training and ex
perience in the field. The course
will begin on March 4.
