Frank Harris, Jr., and J. A.
•Farnan have organized an ad
vertising agency in Griffin and
plan to handle all types of ad
campaigns “from sky-writing on
.down.”
Mr. Harris is a native of Grif
fin. Mrs. Farnan, who Is listed
in the firm as “J.A.” Farnan, is
,a native of Buffalo, N.Y.
The agency, officially known
as H & F Associates, advertis
ing consultants, is located in the
jCarlisle Building on East Solo
mon street.
The agency opened recently
and is now handling ad campa
igns for several Griffin and At
lanta firms.
Harris is a graduate of Griffin
High School and Georgia Tech.
In addition to being a partner

president of Harris Poster Ad
vertising Co.
Mrs. Farnan is a graduate of
•-the University of Minnesota and
of Fordham. She has a degree
in Journalism from Minnesota.
She formerly worked with Time
on the John F. Ken
nedy campaign and in TV pro
duction in Buffalo.

Mr. Avera Os
Smyrna Dies
Mr. Clinton Edgar Avera of
148 Crowe drive, Smyrna, Ga.,
died early Thursday morning.
He was born in Houston Coun
ty and had made his home in
Smyrna for 10 years. Mr. Avera
was employed by the Central Co
lored Studio in Smyrna.
Survivors include his sister,
Mrs. George W. Clark of Orch
ard Hill; three brothers, Wilbur
Avera of Fort Valley, Carlton
Avera of Saxton, Ky., and Hick
son Avera of Macon.
Funeral services were conduc
ted this afternoon at 1:30 o’clo
ck from the chapel of Pittman
Rawls Funeral Home. Dr. Del
ma Hagood officiated and burial
was in the Jordan Chapel ceme
tery in Byron, Ga. Pittman
Rawls Funeral Home was in
charge of plans.

Three truck drivers finally tired
of tapping politely on a
telephone booth where two
young men were talking—
interminably — to their girl
friends.
The truckers tightly bound a
length of rope round and round
the both, trapping the two
youths inside.
They finally got out by
hanging up on their girl friends
—and dialing police assistance.

of E. L. Bartlett, a Demo
crat. Hickel leaves office to

Stevens, 45, has been major

Man Charged
With Assault
In Shooting
Clifford C. Butler of Mt. Zion
Campground in west Spalding
County has been charged with
assault with intent to murder in
the shooting of a Vaughn gro
cerstore operator Thursday.
H. H. Thompson, operator of
Thompson’s Grocery Store in
Vaughn, was shot in the side
with a .22 caliber pistol. He was
treated in the emergency room
at the Griffin-Spalding County
Hospital.
Officers at the Spalding Coun
ty Sheriff’s Department said the
motive of the shooting was not
known. No money was taken
from the store.
Butler is being held in Spald
ing County Jail.

To Begin Jan. 6
At City Park
The Griffin Recreation Depart
ment will begin its winter art,
crafts and ceramic programs on
Jan. 6, 1969.
For adults, an eight weeks be
ginners course of batiks, will be
on Monday nights, starting Jan.
6, through Feb. 24, from 7:30
to 10 p.m. Registration is $2.50.
(mateerials not furnished).
Also for adults will be the
ceramic classes on Tuesdays, 10
a.m. to 2:30 p.m. and Thursday
nights, 6:45 to 9:30 p.m. Class
es begin Jan. 7 and 9, the regis
tration fee is $2.00 for the year.
The young people’s craft class
es for the winter will begin Jan.
20. This class is open to boys
and girls six to 11 years old. It
will be held on Monday after
noons from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. and
will run eight weeks, through
Mar. 10. Registration is one dol
lar (matrials furnished).
All participants must have an
approved Recreation card.
MODEST HERO
LONDON (UPD—The flames
licked up the walls of her house,
and Mrs. Mary Moxey
screamed out a window for
help.
Out of the night, braving
freezing temperatures, came a
man carrying a ladder. He
placed the it next to the house,
climbed to the window and
helped the 45-year-old woman to
safety.
Without giving his name, he
slipped away in the darkness
in his T-shirt and undershorts.

Mr. Long
Dies Today
Mr. Floyd Oliver Long, 66,
died this morning at the West
bury Nursing Home.
Mr. Long had made his home
in Griffin for 27 years. He was
a member of the County Line
Baptist Church in Newton Coun
ty where he was born and rear
ed.
Survivors Include his wife,
Mrs. Cordell Vinning Long; six
daughters, Mrs. Jimmy Higgins,
Mrs. Shirley Ward, both of Grif
fin; Mrs. Evelyn Jones, Mrs.
June Thomas, both of Augusta,
Miss Mary Long of San Jose,
Calif., and Mrs. James Bennett
of MacClenny, Fla.; five sons,
Billy Long, Jerry Long, both of
Griffin, Sidney Long of Augus
ta, Bobby Long of Albany and
Harland Long of Riverdale; one
brother, Homer Long of Porter
dale; two sisters, Mrs. Roselle
Downs of Covington and Mrs.
Ezelle Smallwood of Porterdale;
18 grandchildren and two great
grandchildren.
Funeral services will be an
nounced by McDonald Chapel.
Burning Trash Causes
Two Grass Fires
The Dundee Volunteer Fire De
partment reported calls to two
grass fires Thursday. No dam®
age was reported in the two fir
es.
Firemen answered the first
call at 11:10 a.m. to North Nin
th street and the other call at
2:35 p.m., at 226 Bleachery st
reet.
Both fires were caused from
burning trash.
HITS HIGH NOTES
CHICAGO (UPD—Henry Hite,
53, and oboe Ist, caught
everyone’s attention Thursday
at O’Hare International Airport.
Hite, on his way to a concert in
Dallas, is 8-foot-2.
