Modern Designs Win Awards
From more than 600 entries, 25 products won awards in
the 24th Annual International Design Awards program
staged by the American Institute of Interior Designers, L
Awards were granted only to new, creative expressions in
the 20th-century manner. Here are some of the winning

Mr. Johnson, 76,
Os Senoia Dies
Mr. Jay Claude Johnson, 76,
of Senoia, Ga., died this morn
ing at the Coweta General Hos
pital in Newnan where he h ad
been a patient for several days.
A native of Meriwether Coun
ty, Mr. Johnson had resided in
Senoia for 50 years and was as
sociated with the McKnight
Store and Ginning Co. until his
retirement.
Mr. Johnson was a member of
the Senoia Baptist Church where
he served on the Board of Dea
cons and was a member of the
Gaulding Lodge of Masons.
Survivors Include his widow,
Mrs. Lois Longino Johnson; one
daughter, Mrs. Joe Atkinson of
Senoia; one son, Ellis Johnson
of Huntsville, Ala.; one sister,
Mrs. Otis Turner of Concord;
and six grandchildren.
Funeral plans will be announ
ced by Haisten Funeral Home
of Griffin where the body will
remain until services.

Marvin E. Wiles, who was st
ricken ill while vacationing here
last summer, today thanked the
staff and doctors at the Griffin-
Spalding Hospital “for the excel
lent treatment I received.”
Mr. Wiles, of Birmingham,
Ala., said,
“I am sure the people of Grif
fin already know they have a
fine hospital.
“I would like to express my
thanks for the treatment I re
ceived when I was a patient
there.
"During my visit to Griffin last
summer, I was taken to the hos
pital at 2 a.m. Never have I re
ceived such gracious treatment.
Never will I be able to thank the
personnel, especially on the
first floor, for the excellent tr
eatment I received.
"I was a stranger In your city,
and you took me In.”
Mr. Wiles was taken 111 while
visiting relatives in East Griffin.
Burglars Take
Shoes From
Service Station
Burglars broke Into Ralph's
Service Station on North Hill st
reet early Sunday morning and
took three pairs of shoes.
Deputies of the Spalding Coun
ty Sheriff’s Department said in
a report that the burglars enter
ed the building by breaking out
the bottom panes of a front
door.
The burglary was discovered
by a paper carrier who woke up
Ralph Stephens, the owner and
operator. Stephens lives In the
Service Station building.
The shoes were described as
being Stone Mountain brand.
They are light tan and were
sizes seven, eight and one
half and 10.
The value of the shoes was es
timated at $41.85. Damage to the
front door was estimated at sl3.
Teen Runs Into
Path Os Auto;
Suffers Injuries
A Griffin teenager was injur
ed Saturday afternoon when he
ran into the path of an automo
bile in the 100 block of North
Hill street.
Raymond D. Gibson, 17, of 1416
Tower street, was treated at the
Griffin-Spalding County Hospi
tal for injuries to his leg and
head. His injuries were not ser
ious.
A traffic report said he ran
from between two parked cars
Into the path of the one that st
ruck him.

Thursday For
College Courses
Pre-registratlon for University
of Georgia extension courses to
be taught at Griffin High Sc
hool during the winter quarter
will be held Thursday night at
6:30 in the GHS cafeteria.
Purpose of the pre-registration
is to determine what courses will
be taught during the quarter.
Registration will be held Mon
day night, Jan. 6. Tuition and
registration fees must be paid
at this time. Tuition is S4O per
course plus $1 for registration.
Books must be purchased Mon
day night or an additional fee of
$1 must be paid for shipping
them from the University of Ge
orgia.
First period courses are tau
ght from 6 till 8:10 p.m. Second
period is from 8:20 till 10:30 p.
m.

To Begin Jan. 6
At Center
Health classes for the winter at
the Griffin Recreation Depart
ment will begin Monday, Jan. 6.
Ladies classes will be held Mon
day, Wednesday and Friday mor
nings from 10 to 11 a.m. Also on
Tuesday and Thursday nights
from 7:30 until 8:30 p.m. Regis
tration fees will be one dollar
per month, payable the first
class of each month.
There will be classes offered
for junior and senior high girls,
beginning Tuesday, Jan. 7. Cl
asses will be held on Tuesday
and Thursday afternoons, from
4:30 until 5:30 p.m. There will be
no registration fee.

Mrs. Lyles Os
Zebulon Dies
Mrs. Elizabeth Barrow Lyles,
82, of Zebulon, widow of Mr. Eu
gene Beckham Lyles, died early
Sunday morning at the Griffin-
Spalding County Hospital. She
had been ill for the past three
years and had been confined to
the Westbury Nursing Home.
Mrs. Lyles was a lifelong re
sident of Pike County, daughter
of the late John Barrow and the
late Lydia Whatley Barrow. She
was a member of the Zebulon
Baptist Church.
She Is survived by two daugh
ters, Mrs. Melvin Buffington and
Mrs. Mary Lena Harrison of Gr
iffin; one son, Raymond M. Ly
les of Griffin; three grandchild
ren and one great-grandchild.
Funeral services were conduc
ted this afternoon at 2:30 o'clo
ck from the chapel of Haisten
Funeral Home. The Rev. Theo
dore Terry and the Rev. Doug
las Winn officiated and burial
was in East View cemetery In
Zebulon.
Mr. W. P. Reeves
Dies Today
Mr. William P. Reeves, 70, of
Route three, Griffin, Zebulon
road, Mt. Gilead community,
died early this morning at the
Griffin-Spalding County Hospital
where he was admitted Friday.
He had been In declining health
for several years.
Mr. Reeves was a lifelong re
sident of Pike County and was a
member of the Mt. Gilead Bap
tist Church.
He is survived by his wife,
Mrs. Rosalyn Davis Reeves: two
daughters, Mrs. H. W. Helton of
Charlotte, N.C., and Mrs. H. L,
Barber of Fairburn: one broth
er, Eugene Reeves of Griffin;
two sisters, Mrs. Lena Buchan
an of Griffin and Mrs. Trumle
Aiken of Atlanta; and six grand
children.
Funeral services will be con
ducted Tuesday afternoon at 2
o'clock from the Mt. Gilead
Baptist Church with the Rev.
Clifford Chandler and the Rev.
R. W. Jones officiating. Burial
will be in the church cemetery.
Mr. Reeves’ will remain at Ha
isten Funeral Home until carried
to the church to lie in state 30
minutes prior to the funeral ser
vice.
Mr. Duffee
Dies Today
Mr. Homer Watson Duffee.
72, died this morning at his resi
dence, 1320 Experiment street.
He was born and reared In
Spalding County and was a
member of the Trinity Baptist
Church. Mr. Duffee was a veter
an of World War One.
Survivors Include his wife,
Mrs. Pearlie Mae Bishop Duffee;
two daughters, Mrs. Addie Lou
Vining of Milner and Mrs. Fan
nie Jean Flvnt of Forest Park;
four sons, Elmer Duffee of Grif

Cynthia Scoggins, infant daugh
ter of Mr. and Mrs. Rayford Sc
oggins of Route Two, Griffin,
were conducted this afternoon at
1 o'clock from the Hollonville ce
metery. The Rev. Rufus Dee
officiated.
In addition to her parents she
is survived by her grandparents,
Mr. and Mrs. Eddie B. Coe of
Griffin and Mr. and Mrs. Frank
Scoggins of Concord.

was in charge of plans.

Buried Today
Funeral services for Mr. Sid
ney Irvin Clark, Jr., were con
ducted this afternoon at 3 o’clo
ck from Clark’s chapel in Upson
County. The Rev. Foy Perkins
and the Rev. Bernard McCard
officiated and burial was In the
Southview cemetery In Thomas
ton.
Mr. Clark died at the Griffin-
Spalding County Hospital on
Tuesday.
McDonald Chapel was in char
ge of plans.
Ex-Griffinite
Dies In Indiana
Mr. Calvin Gilbert died Sun
day afternoon in a veteran’s
hospital in Indianapolis, Ind. He
was the son of Mr. and Mrs. J.
W. Gilbert of Griffin.
Mr. Gilbert was bom and rear
ed in Spalding County.
Other Griffin survivors include
a sister, Mrs. Frank Shirey and
a brother, Franklin Gilbert.
Funeral arrangements will be
announced.

Run Away Truck
Overturns
ATLANTA (UPD—A tractor
trailer filled with heavy card
board products ran away early
today, overturning on an em
bankment just above the north
bound lane of an Atlanta ex
pressway.
“It’s a miracle It didn't run
down to the expressway,” In
vestigating patrolman W. L.
Plough said.
Rush hour traffic was slowed
and a city bus plowed into the
rear of a truck as drivers
gawked at the bizarre scene.
The driver had stopped in a
service station at 14th Street
and the expressway to buy cig
arettes, and put on his brakes,
but the air pressure apparently
failed, Plough said.
The truck rolled down an In
cline and overturned just above
the ramp leading to the north
bound lane of Interstate 75-85.
LaGrange Men
Killed In Wreck
LAGRANGE, Ga. (UPD—Two
young men were killed and a
third injured early today when
their speeding car careened off
U.S. 29 south of here and
smashed Into a tree.
Roger Timms, 23, and Hubert
M. Burk, 19, both of LaGrange,
were dead on arrival at a hos
pital here.
The state patrol said the
driver of the car, Bobby L.
Sharman, 17, of LaGrange, lost
control as It rounded a curve
about five miles south of town.
The vehicle skidded off the road
and struck a tree.
The Sharman youth was ad
mitted to City-County Hospital,
then transferred to a Columbus
hospital to undergo surgery for
head and Internal Injuries.
Man Charged
With Raping Girl
DEMOREST, Ga. (UPD —
Charles Tosh, 20, of Murphy,
N. C., has been arrested on a
charge of raping an 8-year-old
girl.
Tosh was arrested by police
using bloodhounds Saturday af
ter a three-hour chase through
a mountainous area near the
scene of the alleged assault,
near Clarksville.
Habersham authorities said
the assailant attacked the un
identified girl in a vacant house
about a mile from where she
lived near Clarksville.

“They probably wanted to be
caught,” said a Dublin police
officer, following their capture
early Sunday morning, a little
more than 24 hours after their
escape.
The two broke out of the
public works camp along with
two other inmates Friday night
after overpowering a guard.
They were spotted shortly af
ter midnight Saturday walking
along Georgia highway 22 and
immediately identified them
selves to State Patrol officers,
volunteering even to tell the
officers where they had left a
prison truck which served as
the escape vehicle.
The two other escapers were
recaptured earlier.

A local fishing club wound up
an angling contest this week
with more prizes than prize win
ners. So It presented a special
award to Alan Thacker, who
caught no fish but did hook his
own nose.
North Carolina is one of the
original 13 states and the 12th
