Dandy Offensive Show Seen In Peach Bowl
By DAVID MOFFIT
UPI Sports Writer
ATLANTA (UPI) — For a
Johnny - come - lately, the folks
running tonight’s first annual
Peach Bowl have come up with
what should be a dandy offen
sive show.
It’s aerial - minded Florida
State (8-2) against versatile
Louisiana State (7-3) and,
since both of these teams have
shown ability to score touch
downs In bunches, this could be
one of the highest scoring
games of the many post-season
classics.
That goes especially for Flori
da State. The Semlnoles have
a fearsome weapon In Bill Cap
pieman passing to Ron Sellers
and you have to go back only

Sellers, college football’s al

touchdown passes in a 42-24 vic

State’s passing marks despite
not becoming a starter until the
third game of the season, add
ed four more TD passes in the
Semlnoles’ surprising 40 -2Q
season-ending win over Houston.
Louisiana State blew hot and
cold during the season but the
return of quarterback Freddie
Haynes and fullback Eddie Ray,
both out with Injuries most of
the season, should return the
Bengals to early season form

when they opened with three
straight victories.
Despite the Injury, Haynes
and his replacement, Mike Hill
man, set new passing marks
this past season for the Bengals
who prefer to stay on the
ground. Even without Ray,
LSU, with an average of 196
yards per game, was second on
ly to unbeaten Georgia among
the Southeastern Conference
rushing leaders.
A crowd of about 40,000—two

Georgia, Vandy Clash
As SEC War Resumes
By RABUN MATTHEWS
ATLANTA (UPl)—The South
eastern Conference war begins
in earnest this week with a full
slate of skirmishes next Satur
day night, highlighted by the
battle at Athens, Ga. between
the University of Georgia and
revenge-minded Vanderbilt.
The Commodores last visited
Georgia toward the end of the
season last year, fighting for
the top spot in the conference.
The Bulldogs, rolling toward
their finest season in 20 years
but out of the conference chase,
buried Vandy 91-77 and dashed
any title hopes the Commodores
had.
This year, Vanderbilt is 1-0 in
the SEC and Georgia 1-1, and
Coach Roy Skinner’s team
would like nothing better than
to send the Bulldogs reeling to a
fourth-consecutive defeat after
five straight opening season
victories.
In other conference action
Saturday night, LSU, 2-0 and
leading the SEC behind the
magic touch of Pete Maravich,
will be at Alabama, Auburn
plays Florida in Gainesville,
Kentucky travels to Mississippi
and Tennessee plays Mississippi
State in Starkville.
Last week, there was no
conference activity, but every
team in the conference saw
activity with the exception of
Tennessee and Alabama.
Georgia and Florida did meet,
but in the consolation game of
the Gator Bowl tournament in
Jacksonville, Fla. after each
had lost in the opening round,
Missouri Humiliates
Tide In Gator Bowl
JACKSONVILLE. Fla. (UP!) ,
—Even if Alabama’s ‘'Bear"
Bryant had been thinking about
retiring from coaching, it's a
cinch that Saturday's Gator
Bowl game would have changed
his mind.
When the “Bear” does call it
quits, you can be sure it will
be in the flush of success—not
in the wake of one of the worst
beatings any Bryant - coached
team has ever taken.
Missouri humiliated Alabama
35-10 Saturday and the 25-point
margin wasn’t a true yardstick i
by which to gauge how com-1
pletely the Tigers manhandled )
the favored Crimson Tide.
Bryant was right on target I
when he moaned after the)
game, ‘‘We were really horse-)
whipped...they beat us every i
way known to man.”
Ran Over Bama
Without completing a singlel
pass, Missouri gained 404 yards
by the simple procedure of run
ning over and around the I
harassed Alabama defense.
The Tiger defense was just as
awesome, to the dismay of 68,-1
Oil Gator Bowl fans—most of
whom were there to cheer Ala
bama. With Alabama passers
dumped a dozen times, the
Tidemen wound up with a
minus 45 yards rushing and a
net of only 23 yards for the en-1
tire afternoon.
‘‘They rushed six men on a
wide defense and it’s hard to j
block that many men out,” )
complained sophomore quarter-)
back Scott Hunter who set)
many Alabama passing records
during the season but who
wound up with a net of only
seven yards in the Gator Bowl.
Credit to McMillan
Missouri coach Dan Devine,
who picked up his fourth
straight bowl win. insisted that
a lion's share of the credit
should go to junior quarterback
Terry McMillan who scored the
Tigers’ first three touchdowns
and "called the whole game.”
McMillan, who was a third
string quarterback during his
high school days at Coral Ga
bles, Fla., put In a word for
tailback Greg Cook who gained
179 yards in 27 carries, includ
ing a 36-yard touchdown run,
and the Missouri defense.
"It sure felt great to sit on
the bench and see our defensive
line do such a great job,” Mc-
Millan said.
Bryant, obviously embar
rassed about the worst defeat
Monday, Dec. 30, 1968 Griffin Daily Newt
ter a toss-up.
Pike shot down Campbell of
Fairburn 67-39 Saturday night to
make it to the finals.
Forest Park stopped Newnan,
68-62.
Randy Smith, one of Pike’s
two all-state candidates, popped
in 24 points in the semi-finals.
Wayne Green, the other half of
the Pirates’ dynamic duo, scor
ed 17, Alan Connell made 11,
Georgia to Boston College, 89-
83, and Florida to Northwester,
76-72. Florida edged the Bull
dogs, 82-77, handing Georgia its
third consecutive loss of the
season.
“Pistol” Pete Maravich,
meanwhile, was scoring 45 and
40 points In the opening two
i games of the All-College tour
nament in Oklahoma City and
getting some unexpected offen
sive help from his teammates,
as the Tigers whipped Oklaho
ma City and Wyoming to move
into tonight’s finals against
undefeated Duquesne. LSU has
lost once. Despite his offensive
shows, Maravich’s average
I dropped 1.4 points to 46.0.
Auburn won the Mobile
‘ Classic, defeating Southern Mls-
I sissippi, 73-70, and Xavier of
Ohio, 75-73 on a last second
| jump shot by Ronnie Jackson.
Kentucky, ranked fourth In
i the nation, outscored seventh
i ranked Notre Dame 61-44 in the
final half, thrashing the Irish,
110-90 and cementing their role
i as favorite in the SEC chase,
■ although they have not yet seen
I conference action.
Mississippi State and Missis
| sippi each lost two games in
tournament action, the Bulldogs
at the Motor City tournament
and the Rebels at the All-Sports
tournament. Vanderbilt won its
only game last week, defeating
' Southern California 85-75.
Among the major indepen
’ dents in the Southeast, Florida
State lost 83-86 to Ohio State,
Miami won the opening game in
the Hurricane Classic, then lost
Alabama has suffered in the 11
years he has coached there,
was already looking toward
next year.
"It will make a difference in
how we prepare for spring
practice and a lot of ways,”
Bryant said. “There’s no ques
tion about who was better pre
pared...! and my coaching staff
simply did not prepare for the
game properly.”
